(Another Song) About You
John Dewberry Oct 2019
A trite topic
By another name
I think I called her Rose
Maybe it was Brittany
Anything to distract myself
From the problem
This ain’t a game
No ones to blame

This won’t be another song about you
No, this won’t be another song about you

Breaking up
To keep together
Reuniting and breaking again
Same old story
No new allegory
All fate is
Without glory

This won’t be another song about you
No, this won’t be another song about you

Immunity
John Dewberry Mar 2020
Ever want to detach
Just be yourself
For a change
Come to me
Emotionally available
Internally empty

******* to ****
Is ******* pointless
This is a truth
That I’ve believed for so long
But I’ll go till I hit
Rock bottom

You can’t feel fulfilled
Until you lose yourself
Immunity doesn’t exist
Until you need a prescription

Loneliness is not an  ultimatum
Always wine and dine
Before you lay
Cause when you lay
Without getting laid
And sleep together
It’s a date
That’s a date she’s to remember

Wake and prepare breakfast
Think fast
Cause you know
Your cooking isn’t up to par
Doesn’t matter
You’ll be at the bar
With a mamosa before long

You’re deinking to celebrate
The fact that you beat
The notion and stereotype
That you **** for its sake
you don’t feel fake
Merely empty
Cause she left

But you’ll move on
You romanceced your way into bed
And didn’t succumb to your libido
A victory unto itself

Tell me that I’m wrong
If I insinuated that
We’re living in a cage
Does this notion
Leave you enraged

What’s the world doing right now?
Closing its eyes
Covering its ears
the rings of tomorrow still reverberate
The yesteryear of today

Let it Burn
John Dewberry Sep 2020
Destroy recreate
Substantial hate
The times have changed
To the very same
Thing it was fighting before

America:
The imploding family
Distrust is all I see
But does hate see you
When you look at a reflection?

A country destroyed
So that men can debate
History— the symbiosis leaves
Me numb and irate

I won’t burn the flag
I won’t kneel
But I to
Some extant know how you feel
This isn’t the way
But we won’t change
Cause tomorrow’s the same as today

History’s ironic
When we stop and think
That nobody ever learns it
We only discern it
To fit an agenda
  That weaponizes
The politicians own ends
Everyone wants power
And they’ll discard friends
To get it and keep it

....The ****

Someones gotta see that this isn’t partisan
Someone’s gotta see that we need change
Not a revolution per se
But we need to be more self reliant and sustainable
To show certain people that they aren’t needed
The fact that we’ve become so descentized to our own issues that we create problems
Is just the byproduct
Of the **** we created ourselves
John Dewberry Feb 2020
Repetitive
Reciprocal
Reproducible
Life is tragically mundane

Systems and routines
We take for granted
When we do it again
And again
Until we break and bend
The giving tree
Giveth closure
As the seed ***** the water
Nutrients we use to grow
Must be consistently nourished
And kept in valence

Life is tragically mundane
Yet beautiful in its simplicity

Blonde Vs Brunette
John Dewberry May 2019
Blaire the blonde
And Brandy the brunette
Trying to settle an arbitrary cliche
Something that started eons ago won't be ending today
Brandy will get you drunk
Off of ***
Blaire will trick you into loving her (blonds are smarter than often credited)
Blaire is the tonic that put brandy out of business
Yet Blaire is broke
Brandy's boyfriend sold coke
And Brandy consulted Blaire
As a sister whom she adored
Blair gave her some shifty advice
(“******* is caffeine, morphine of high, buy it don't abuse it like I know you will or your surely die”) Brandy decided to sell herself to the streets and became an escort
Blair died of old age alone and homeless
So the moral of the story is that of Robin Hood in reverse When you go over a traverse it's smarter to make stupid decisions some of the time

When in doubt go with red
Inspired by the old L’Oréal commercials. They’re so bad— but I have two sisters so I had no choice but to be exposed to these ads.

Last Week (November 2016)
John Dewberry May 2019
Reel me in
I can’t seem to find my mind again
I refuse
To talk to anyone
And my friends
Are so distant-- Yet it feels like last week that I just saw them

I’m fading away
I’d love to stay
Invisible like I’ve always been
So memorable for all the wrong reasons
I’ve only got two middle fingers and even that’s not enough
forget this
Elongated frustration I’m feeling
Why me- No pity
Someone please tell me
Why we don’t change the mistakes of the past
And why the future seems so last week

Forget me- friends and community
Until I come back and then you’ll see the real me
I don’t need acceptance
That behavior was a fluke
It was my fault
And I’ll take the fall
For the actions one specific individual who I called a friend
Your advice brought with it the decline of six friendships
Precursed and caused an overdose (on the second night of college),  an unsalvageable reputation and the loss of moral. I’m never experimenting with drugs again
I can blame you because it was mostly your fault
But I should’ve never listened to you to begin with
Everyone else was right
And to my fright
I’ve realized that I shouldn’t have had good friends
If  someone like you was going to turn against
Becoming manipulant- a sycophant
You are the reason for my truancy
Even if you’ll never admit your part in this
It’s whatever at this point- I know the truth and I’ve have begun to forgive you
Because all have forgotten about me
But I still regret negatively influencing my college career by taking your advice

On mind and soul
You’ll never know
Just how much this
Takes a toll

You can lead as many lives as you want
But you only die once
Who’s the memory left to?
Those in mourning
Or your spirit
Now free and meandering?
Because thoughts in passing
Are nothing more than
The passing of thoughts
That build a greater shared experience

Don’t mourn a loss
Gain closure in solace
Doves can fly too close to the sun
But passion fuels strength and notion

I’m so tired of not talking to you
That it’s driving me insane

Going against everything I know
If I could think about you a little less
Than I could entertain the thought

Friendship is a two-way deal

The obsequious masses
Blindly burning in the sun
Tell me why
We aptly succumb to the norm becoming bystanders
And why we watch desperately
For the media to report the facets
That have lasted
And most of us still actively do nothing

The world won't stop without us
But we haven't began
To make our footprints in the sand
This world is ours
And as sentient beings
It's ours to protect
by dissecting each other's intellect
And reflecting
And accepting new concepts to protect it
Instead we infect it
The moiety still unifies
To eagerly and obsequiously
Burn themselves in the sun

Be yourself
Don’t be ashamed
Or let yourself be shamed

She wanted more
Was I so wrong?
Was she right?
Her image is still visible... But it's fading behind the rain

Time will only tell
That it's been too long
I sit here and write these songs
But her image is fading behind the rain

Behind the rain
Behind the rain
Strange droplets of water... Is it my memory
Behind the fading rain

What do  I long for?
I don't really know
Hopefully it doesn't show itself
Behind the fading rain

You wake up alone
You sleep alone
And you realize
That everyone you sleepwith

But that doesn’t seem to stop you
You’re on a quest to find connection

You reluctantly
Hop into bed with them
Only to find yourself
On the couch
When all is said and done
You feel no connection
Despite stating the contrary
You were betrayed by situational honesty

Congratulations, you’ve officially

Everyone becomes a boomer
At one point or another
It’s a state of mind

And we aren’t getting younger

It’s not a generation  gap
It’s  a synthesis trap
Life’s a *****

When we hit 30
We’ll be as jaded and cynical as
Our parents

Well all say
“ get off our lawns”
And we’ll start slowly
Losing our libido

**** the youth
For being so agile
And adapt
