Goodbye
Gary Ask Nov 2018
Do I cry for you
or do I cry for myself
as I feel you leave, never to return?

Not knowing where we go
when we are no longer here,
I retreat  to the comfort of belief in things unknown,
yet better, gentler, eternal...

An Open Door
Gary Ask Jul 2018
When I’m not missing you, I’m missing something or someone else.
It looks like I’ll always be a missing person, never quite content.
When the clouds are here I need the sun in my room.
When the sunshines bright I kind of miss the gloom.
When the sea is calm, and the waters like a lake,
I find I miss the storm, the sound of the shore break.
When you are in my arms I miss the space between us.
When you are far from me I need to bridge the distance.
So will I always be feeling so lonely for something more?
When I’m alright inside, why do I need an open door?

The Last Snow
Gary Ask Feb 2019
I took a walk through the snow tonight,
felt the chill wind blow.
Saw the flakes falling around me,
piling up on the sides of the windows.
The lights from inside the apartments were warm, bright, and content.
The sounds of my steps on the sidewalk were my only accompaniment.
It could be that tonight’s snow will be the last snow that I’ll see,
until the autumn ends this year and winter returns to me.
It could be that tonight’s snow will be the last snow that will ever fall,
But I can’t say that with any certainty, so I won’t think that at all.

The Deck
Gary Ask Nov 2021
The deck is in need of some repair
the woods getting old
and there are pieces missing, here and there.

The sun beats down
the rain pours in
the snow piles on
the wind blows within.

It needs some care
it needs repair
Take a look, its plain to see
is it this deck, or is it me?

Sunset
Gary Ask Mar 2019
Its sunset..
you looked a gift horse in the mouth
you took this whole thing towards the South
left all the good stuff on the plate
arrived at the station
five minutes too late,
you took the bull by the horns
but baby, this time you were wrong
you should have gave more than you took
it's always worth a second look
All the hurtful words you said,
our love's still alive
but the lights are red
our loves still alive
as the sunset's red...

Yes, Love
Gary Ask Nov 2018
I always walk with love
Love is over me
Love is all around
Love showers everything

I always smile with love
Love is heaven sent
Love is the answer
Love is what that meant

I always live in love
Love for my sweet girl
Love for my family
Love for everybody

I always believe in love
Love is powerful
Love is flower full
Love is what WE do
Love not hate

This time of the Morning
Gary Ask Mar 2019
Its this time of the morning
when the birds begin their singing
the colors of the daylight
begin to fill the darkness
and night retreats so sweetly
as everything is neatly done and tied.

The waters start reflecting
the yellow rays are turning
the clear water bluer
than the eyes of my lover
as she begins to stir
between the blankets and the covers
as the scent of coffee fills the kitchen
and the kettle whistles gently on the stove.

Now's the chance we're given
to make the most of living
as this gift can't be wasted
and all life must be tasted while we can.

Dance into the morning
greet each new days dawning
with wonder and gratitude
because this dream
will not last forever.

The seas we roam
are deeper than you can imagine.
So sail into tomorrow
without regrets or sorrow
its all in how you see it
so sing, and dance, and be it.....

Your Life's History
Gary Ask Apr 2020
It's nothing but a changing thing
the morning sun and what she'll bring
Everyday is a promise kept
to live it all 'till there's nothing left.
One foot follows the other in time
keep moving and you'll keep the rhyme.
It's unfolding as it's meant to be
your fulfilling your life's history.

Puzzle
Gary Ask Apr 2020
Always, not forever
Constant like a star
knowing all the while
who and what we are

Pieces of a puzzle
somehow we all fit in
as time unveils, so slowly
the mysteries within

Compass
Gary Ask Nov 2020
My mother told me long ago
"the world brings you up.."
And this, I know
circumstances beyond your control
can lead you down so many roads

keep your eyes open
and your dreams alive
I made it through
and you, too, will survive

It's your life to do what you will
do what you want
get your fill
And I will be here
for a while
so let me gather in your smile
Let me love you from afar
watch as you become who you are

I remain a part of you, constantly, and always true
What compass will you use to guide your way?
Forever is just one long day.....

Visitor
Gary Ask Nov 2019
There's a lot of anger and jealousy out there
Disguised as outrage over just about any little thing

Irritability is the song that I hear
Blowing through the hollow halls
Sometimes it gets hard to make it thorough it all
Between the self loathing and the second guessing
you will find me giving blessings for the life I lead

But if this is what love is
It's imperfection is it's everything
and accepting this fact is the beginning of your
kind understanding

So let the transient minutes fly by
and remember of them what you will
I remain a visitor here
I'm climbing to the top of that hill
Just climbing to the top of the hill

Life
Gary Ask Jan 2021
Mystery envelops me
as I fall into another sleep
as I wake to find another dawn
and hear outside the Robin's song.

All that was and all that will be
the air is sweet with eternity
and the never ending cycle of life
the truth cuts through me like a knife.

I hear the sounds of words unspoken
write the verses no pen has written
feel the ancient breezes blow
through this modern world of woe.

Although I live and breathe right now
I sense the timelessness of life
the rituals that come and go
the changes that melt like winter's snow.

How many hearts have beaten on this earth?
How many loves have burned within?
Mystery envelops me
as I bathe in all that was
and all that will be.

The Light of Love
Gary Ask Nov 2020
Talking to your past-
The face you grew apart from-
The places you departed-
The memories like rain
Up on the roof

You’re talking back in time
To a place where
Once you laughed
Once you joined together
Made plans way in advance

What comes of conversations
And glances beneath the veneer
Of all the walls and bridges
Put up between you
Through the years?
What can be brought back to life
Or some resemblance of?
Is there still a kind of light there
Could it be the light of love?

Some Winged Mornings
Gary Ask Nov 2019
Some winged mornings
I remember them all
Memories tall,
leftover emotions,
issues unresolved.
Thoughts lay scattered,
Mysteries unsolved.

I can see their face,
hear their voice
remember every painful choice.
Looking back,
reflections are something different than the way things were.

Some winged mornings
when the first breeze stirs and the early morning songbirds
can be heard,
I think of all the masterpieces I have seen.

I'm never prepared for the surprises that await me....

Mothers Day
Gary Ask May 2023
Mother sits in the morning sun in another place
On Mothers Day she has a smile upon her face
Though she's away, I'll see her again in another time
On Mothers Day all the memories begin to shine

So to all the mothers who still walk this earth
Who bring to us the miracles of love and birth
I wish you all the sweetest day this world can bring
And love you all for giving us our songs to sing...

Autumn
Gary Ask Oct 2022
I'm the color of the falling leaves
Turning red after an autumn freeze
I'll take to you like a summers day
but in the end, you'll just walk away

I'm the color of the falling leaves
how long I'll stay before the next cold breeze
takes me down upon the streets below
How long, no one really knows

I'm the color of the falling leaves
You walk right through me
Well up to your knees
You never falter as you pass on through
There's nothing left, but to bid you adieu

Corona Lament
Gary Ask Apr 2020
I miss the crowds
all the smiling faces
being close to all the strangers
as music dances through us all.

I long for the togetherness of a crowded party
with friends and family gathered round.

Watching a movie in a crowded theatre's darkness-
the shared experience of a cinematic moment.

I remember **** Jagger
leading the chants of 50,000 fans in a cosmic rain dance
just a few months ago.

When will we feel free again
like the Grateful Dead feeling?
The bonds of brothers and strangers all together as one.
Close bodies, eye to eye, shoulder to shoulder, hand in hand, dancing!
What we miss now the most in this land.
What we need now the most in this world is love.
"Love is all you need!"

I miss Bourbon Street as the night comes on...
Nashville's crowded ***** Tonks playing music all day long..
New York city's crowds around the Christmas Tree...
I miss you, do you miss me?
Stay healthy and safe till this all passes over, Peace to all!
