in an ancient pagan festival

The Lupercalia Festival

A fertility festival on February 15

St. Valentine, the Catholic Church established

For The founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus,
it was celebrated with animal sacrifices,

The ritual; Men gently slapping women
With crop fields and raw dead goat, hide strips
dipped in blood, which is thought to help fertility

(Hence the Blood Red color was a major contributing factor to the ritual)

Medieval beliefs

on Valentine’s Day,

some believed birds chose their mate on that day

The poet Geoffrey Chaucer linked Saint Valentine with romantic love in the Middle Ages
with his poem The parliament of the fouls

Saint Valentine was a Catholic priest
in Rome in the third century.

He was known for performing secret marriages
for young couples, which was against
the emperor’s orders.

He was executed for defying the emperor’s
band on marriage and for trying to convince
the emperor to accept Christianity

Birds are a very significant part of Valentine’s Day

There is an official Valentine’s Day

.
The holiday isn’t an anti-Valentine’s Day event, but rather a moment to celebrate
self love and platonic relationships

Quirky Alone Day
has been celebrated globally since 2003.

William Shakespeare inspired the tradition by writing a Billet-doux a letter to Juliet

Inspired by tradition

named valentine

Although this holiday is a hodgepodge
loosely put together with no real tradition
other than rituals it has flowered into
an significant part of society culture

If you are married
Or in love
Valentine’s Day
Comes from Cupid
Angel’s up above

Deliveries to work are gifts
Of candy and flowers
Evening plan a romantic
Candlelight dinner for hours
Followed by
Hugs and endless kisses
Many sweet untold wishes

However if you are
Alone or single,
This day is an empty heart
That sadly tingles

One by one coworkers
Received their deliveries
Their glances of pity
Only added to my misery

Their words of sympathy
Only deep into my pain
Hoping the day would end
Before I go insane

Now
Hurtful memories of
Old versus New
Dinner for one
Instead of two

There was a time when
I too receive my deliveries
Before the days of
Now and my misery

My gallant man,
love of my life
Did not come home.
I spent Valentine’s Day
Staring out the window alone
Waiting by the phone.

I cried myself to sleep
I thought life
Could not be more bleak
For a young newly wed wife.

He came home
After a night at the bar
He had bought Flowers
But left them in the car

The next day
When I awoke,
Not a word between us,
We spoke

He had retrieved the
Flowers from the car
placed them in a vase.
You should’ve seen
The look on my face.

A dozen
Once beautiful
long stemmed roses
Had wilted
Like our love
Empty and jilted

I silently took
A pair of scissors
From the drawer
by the bed

Cutting the roses
one by one
At the base
Of the bulb head

My husband
Said nothing,
Only
Shook his head

He
Closed his eyes
To the
Shame blame
Game

I set the
Scissors down
Without
Placing blame

I made it clear
I never want roses
On valentine’s Day
We never spoke of it.
What was the point
Anyway

Valentine’s Day
Is a memory
Rubbed in my face,
Bittersweet sadness
Takes love’s place

Today 2025
42 Valentine ‘s Days
We whether together

We have learned to let
Our hurt go
Only then
Can we trust and grow

Our love
Carried us through
All the turbulence
If you only knew

A relationship
Takes it’s toll
Staying together
Instead of letting go

People ask,
what is your secret
for staying together?

Forgiveness patience
And unconditional love
Are gracious gifts
From God
In Heaven above

Every Day is
Valentine’s Day

Filled with vestiges of yesteryear’s
My dreams reminisce  joyful tears

I have become a relic of my past
as I age, my memory will not last

Father time no longer my friend
The past doesn’t seem real in the end

I wonder what was it all for?
Spiritual warfare Satan keeping score

Was everything a test?
I hope I truly tried my best

By the grace of God
The Holy Spirit, a wink and a nod

I have eyes that see
Have I lived up to who God wants me to be

I have ears that hear
Putting on my armor of God without fear

I pray
Knowing
God knows what I’m gonna say

God knows my questions
God knows my heart

Yes still I pray
I am not worthy
That God should enter under my roof
Lord say the word
And my soul shall be healed
Rejoice in peace my heart will be filled

Lies become the truth

Believe in Relativism

It helps “them” feel free

Modern Haiku
3 lines defined by
Syllable pattern 5-7–5

Inspired song;

I believe
By Tom Jones (1970)

Footnote
Relativism is the belief that there’s no absolute truth. Only the truth that a particular individual or culture happened to believe..
(I had never taught before )
I admit I was excited and nervous

My first night teaching
Was basically housekeeping
Passing out packets explaining
The rules, I was basically preaching

I looked at the sea of eager faces and said “I’m going to give you all an “A”
right now. Everybody in this classroom has an “A”in the class.!”
All the students cheered loudly
A Student asked “ what’s the catch?
I smiled and said
“It’s up to you to keep it”
The class exploded with nervous laughter

The same Student raised her hand
(an eager ******, I thought Good)
Great, my first real question
“ isn’t it time for our break?”
I was not told anything about a break
I didn’t wanna make a mistake

So I began to ad lib. the conversation
Does everybody believe
we should take a break?
Every hand went up
Yes, said a student. All the other students nodded their head in agreement.

And when are we
supposed to have our break?
Again, all the hands went up
Student said
“ about now for 15 minutes”

OK we’re all on the same page
so nobody should be late returning
Let’s take our break now.

As an adult instructor
One must exude confidence
Be Sure of all explanations and answers
And At times to finesse
The situation from escalating

While working on an
Emergency medical hotline,
If we didn’t know the answers

we had a pack phrase “
“I’m going to do a little research to make sure  I’m giving you the most up to date accurate information”.
OR
Let me check into that and I’ll get back to you.(give a call back time)
Make sure you call back
You’re only as good as your word.

To reiterate
It’s OK to not know the answer,
Never say “I don’t know the answer”
Never let them see you sweat
Fake it, until you make it
If at all plausible ad lib.
BLT Webster’s Word of the Day challenge
2-6-25 ad lib.
To ad Lib some things, such as a performance or part of performance is to make up words that had not been planned. Example the actor forgot his line so he ad-lib
