Light

I fall so hard each time
and wonder why there are scars
on my kneecaps

Back in the day
light as a feather meant so much more
than it does now

Light as a feather
but riddled with two little weights that
unapologetically hang from my shoulders

Light as a feather
but watching another fall just a little bit
faster into the small of your palm

Light as a feather
but stiff as a board

Watching your pupils dilate
the way I’ve been dying to

begin again
look for the lipstick
look for the cuffed sleeves
look for my sanity

fall back
missing you comes in waves
i can’t tell exactly when it
first knocked me off my feet

a familiar pain

it’s okay if you’ve got nothing to say
cause i said what i needed to
it’s okay if you run away
cause i know where to find you
I am the hummingbird now

I am the one with wings a million miles an hour and not enough nectar

I am too small to notice but when you do notice me I am the most beautiful thing you could ever see

However it is getting colder now,
Colder than it has ever been,
And my wings have forgotten how to move quicker than lightning,
And I will fall louder than thunder in this neighborhood,
I will die a martyr for your eyes and a sweet tooth for your candy

Salt shaker pepper jack dinner table,
I am a lonely man,
My family has since gone away but this house is still as full as ever,
I set the plates and silverware out with a candle for each

I have become my own apostle, disciple of my memory’s Christ, and when this dinner is over I will have realized that I was the one who betrayed myself

I still talk to the dead about them, and I am not scared of their reactions any longer

And when I ring the dinner bell, I will sit and eat and fellowship with everyone all at once

And we will break bread, like my wings when I am cold

And we will drink wine, red like nectar from the backyard

And when I finally go, there will be thunderstorms in this neighborhood

i can't beat the clock.
the hands of death,
if hands at all,
are linked to my limbs, in martyrdom.
in fall, i smell lilies,
like those we tossed into the ground
with you.
why are we buried closer to hell?

I dreamt he called me the most beautiful.
It drifted through my open sill,
and landed softly upon my cheek.
Feathers from heavens danced
into my bed
where I was still, but imps played in twilight.
Cursed be the fool that brought me here,
into madness,
out of love.
I'll wait no longer for another to cleanse me,
and if one should try
they shall be naught but a dunce.
Perhaps it was the drought that brought upon this rain,
where I am the ground and he the God
that pulls winds my way.
I cannot say with certainty that my soul will rest this night.

White lights reverberated hallelujah across blue sun kissed rivers
in an endless chorus of need we are free
Free to believe that we have endless opportunity in a sea of nettles
tightening their grip on every wrist reaching for salvation
Pushing their way up to the great promise of a burning red dream
screaming passion in their sheets as they drip with the atrocities
the atrocities of the people,
for the people,
by the people.
the people who are chained together by the stripes that freed them

I reached my hands into the pockets of my thrifts store jeans and pulled back another woman's trash, her ailments.
As her Halls wrapper crinkled in my fingers I contemplated her struggles.
Drowning in a sea of chamomile tea and honey trying to inhale the sent of Vicks vapor rub over the smell of stale bed sheets and wilted flowers.
Was her path so different from mine?
Did she kneel in her wine stained carpet to watch her life move around her?

Hello.

Another night for the books
stumbling down an empty street
at midnight with our hands around each other

Your eyes did the thing
where they’re traveling to my mouth
instead of listening

Crossing state lines
saying goodbye as the bridge
is burning in the rearview

Forever, we screamed
I remember as I grabbed the poison
from your fingers and took a hit
She said baby I can’t wait to see you coat the back of your throat with those lies,
Kisses sweet like honey,
*** like medicine,
Skin on skin therapy,
I’ll lick your wounds if you like mine,
Tears leave burn scars on the cheeks,
We set the whole world on fire and laid back wine drunk and called ourselves freaks

Our hearts, a thrift store painting, cracked frame, with inanimate intentions, little to no feeling, we just can’t wait to look good in someone else’s home some day,
Worth nothing more than a couple of pennies,
Heartbreak is seemingly dirt cheap now but I can’t wait until the day that we grow so much from it that we see it as priceless

They tell you never to hurt an artist because you’ll live in infamy but I bet that ****’ll be so beautiful once they all leave

I’m not saying I wanna her lonely,
Just happy,
I’m not saying I wanna see her hurting,
Just laughing

They take her, call her theirs, take advantage, to the point where she confuses her breathing with second guessing

I can’t wait until we meet again,
I can’t wait until we grow and I can’t wait until we meet again,
I’m a completely different person, I swear it,
I haven’t taken off your heart from my sleeve, I think at this point I’ll always wear it

Honeybee, you got all of me, and some days that might not seem to be enough, but trust me,
I’m trying

This isn’t a love poem yet, but someday I hope it will be,
Forever yours,
Always

i'm looking for something
that i can't find
because it's already mine
i just don't think i deserve it

right under my nose
i miss you
when good things happen
who do i tell them to?

the moment you let me in
i saw the labyrinth
the demons you speak of
really exist

feeling like the cigarette
you smoked once
then never again
