High up in a tree
An orange and battered leaf
Twists, turns and flutters
The passing raven calls,"prruk!"
Beneath the dark blue mountain
"You are my first love!"
I stopped, smiled and asked, "Your first?"
She answered, "Indeed."
Rolled the dice across the board
I looked and she had boxcars!
From tiny to huge
Bells ring, chime and clang brightly
Across night's dark vault
And the silent snow drifts down
Filling my heart with good cheer
Tanka
Soft blue shadows
On deep and fleecy snow
Hiding what's beneath it's blanket

Soft blue shadows
Beneath the dead grey sky
A tiny cabin sits snowbound

Soft blue shadows
Through barbwire brambles I
Stare to see if life is within

Soft blue shadows
As from the brick chimney
Thin dark smoke is falling straight up

Soft blue shadows
Within a small landscape
So familiar, so remote
This poem was inspired by a painting by my Father, Alexander Francis Walker. He painted it shortly after he returned from the war. It has always given me a certain sense of dread, fascination, beauty, sadness and yearning.
She guides him to her
Silently and urgently
Outside, rain falls hard
Cars make wet pavement hisses
And sirens wail through the night
Dealing with the mad
You have to find their logic
And build from there
Though it really can be said
There are many points of view
Silver horizon
Clouds stretched across it's bright arc
Black cutouts of ships
Within the fluorescent glow
Like thoughts in my mind's furnace
Blown glass Ornaments
Sprinkled with crushed glass frosting
On the fragrant tree
Below, a child stares, beguiled
Nearby the hearth snaps and pops
Christmas at my Grandparents was always a magical time (my mother's parents, English...however, Upon hearing Oh Tannenbaum  I always preferred to think of the Christmas tree as that...funny and wonderful how children make their histories
Yellow ochre clouds
Strumble across the dark sky
Scraping sawtooth peaks
A flash explodes, blinding me
I flee down the mountainside
Tanka
The band plays loudly
Well dressed rhinos and cougars
Pose and line up for action
I catch your eye and exit
You follow me and escape
