I Don't Know Why
I really don't know why
But here I sit again
An empty page before me
A pen within my hand

As I look upon the page
Laying as an empty canvas waiting
I contemplate the colors
Before my hands begin their painting

What picture will I paint
What thought will be revealed
When the ink at last is brushed
To bring forth the story concealed

I don't know why I posses
A desire that has no end
To create an image or thought
With paper and with pen.

Seeking A Quiet Place
Where is it a man must go?
How far must he travel?
To find a place of peace
Free of noise and rattle

It seems I am pressed
Upon each and every side
Mans noise and sound and confusion
My ears can no longer abide

Mingled within the sounds of man
My ears hear the songs of birds
They call me to a quiet place
Where only natures sounds are heard

I look I seek I strive
For a place to clear my mind
Why does it elude me so?
The quiet I hope to find

Peace,Reassuring Peace
There is peace,reassuring peace
In the quite of natures sound
In the very presence of God himself
Be still and know there God is found

There is peace, reassuring peace
Within the touch of the unseen wind
It washes over ones heart and soul
A peace so true does not offend

There is peace, reassuring peace
In a faith that is bold and strong
When such a faith fills ones heart
Ones heart can only sing a song

There is peace,reassuring peace
When Jesus takes us by our hand
And we trust him to gently lead us through
This dark and weary and fearful land

There is peace, reassuring peace
That only comes from heavens portal
Such a peace so reassuring
Given by God to me a mortal

One More Breath
Why is it we gasp
To take one more breath
Why do we try to stay ahead of the reaper
Try to elude his sickle of death

Why when we are sick
Do we seek to be made well
Why do we try to get back up
When to illness we have fell

Why do we hold on the tightest
When we are at our life's end
Why do we look back from the bed of death
And wish for life again

When dying why do we revive
Old memories from long ago
Why do we call out
To those we love and know

It is appointed to all men
That once each man must die
But even while yet dying
We hope and fight for life

For in our heart we know it is through our living
That our love is made known
And we know when we are within the grave
No more love can be sown

So it is life we seek
While engaged in a struggle with death
To remain to live to love
To take just one more breath.

If you possess kindness
Show it to another
If you have forgiveness
Give it to a brother

If you have a hand to lend
Give it to a stranger
If you have courage
Help one in fear through danger

If you have encouragement
Encourage the one defeated
If you can inspire
Inspire one who needs it

If you have a smile
Show it to your neighbor
If you have a willing hand
Help someone in their labor

If you have an adversary
Try to make of him a friend
If you know someone alone
Seek them to befriend

Show grace to all you meet
Treat every person right
Show to all the truest love
Show the love of Jesus Christ

Chapters (Part One)
My life's book has been good
Not each chapters title has been perfect
Not every turned page has read of what's expected or hoped for
Most have been beautiful
Some very sad
Not every title of every chapter is a title I've wished to read
But each one has been a part of my life
And whatever the title is when the page of the last chapter is turned
I have always made it through to the next chapter
But this new chapter has taken me by complete surprise
It's title is one I wish could be torn out and thrown away
This new chapters title is;
Cancer
I've only had the chance to read the first few pages of the chapter
And what I have read thus far
I do not like
This is a chapter I would love to pass over
But I would not get the complete story if I did
As if I even can
So I continue to read each day
Every morning is a new pages beginning
Where will the story take me
I do not know
But I shall keep on reading.
My father was diagnosed with lung cancer yesterday . This is a road I have never traveled , but like all other journeys I have been on, this one too will be travelled with faith and hope and trust.
Psalms121:1-2
I will lift my eyes to the mountains,
where does my help come from.
My help comes from the Lord,
the maker of heaven and earth.

Overnight
A beautiful blanket of white
Covers the frozen earth
It is slowly disappearing
As spring is marching forth
Another beautiful covering of snow here in Texas last night. The sky is blue and the sun is shining brightly this morning. I know spring is on its way.

Mother Waits
I've looked and sought through the days
But still I do not see
Any mother made from the mold
That shaped the mother God made for me

My mother so loving
My mother so kind
She knitted her family
With ties that bind

O mother I miss you
Your tender voice your joyous laugh
your gentle smile
I know I shall see you again
But I must remain for yet a little while

My mother she waits
On heavens sweet shore
To welcome us home
Forevermore.

This Morning InTexas
Gazing out the window
On this beautiful winters morn
Under sky's of gray
Where the flakes of snow are born

It is a peaceful scene
Snow silently crashing to the ground
All that was so dark
Is covered in white all around

The branches of the trees
Glimmer with a diamond coating
As from above up higher
The white keeps downward floating

So peaceful, beautiful, serene
Is this morning to my sight
As I watch God slowly paint
The earth in purest white

Visiting Yesterday
Today,my memory has taken me back
To a time when all was good
Back to when I was just a boy so young
Playing cowboy in my old neighborhood

I suppose there is not enough ink and paper
To record this young cowboys dreams
If I were to settle down and write
And record each cherished scene

Of days that are so distant now
And of images that are fading fast
When I begin to recall how it was I wish
These days could forever last

The hand of time changes all it touches
A childhood lingers for only a while
But the hand of time cannot take from me
Childhood memories that cause me to smile

At the old home place I see a simpler time
And I hear old familiar sounds
There dwell the voices and faces I used to know
I see my footprints embedded upon the ground

These old memories I hold so dear
To recall them I shall always endeavor
I carry them deep within my heart
These days that I  wish would last forever.

Faiths Unseen Bridge
Is it the "not knowing" that restrains us
Fear and what we precieve as failure or rejection
We know we should not harbor such goods
But still we carry the heavy cargo

We would like to push it all overboard
Watch fear sink till it fades from our sight
Knowing in our heart it is gone
Forever laid to death in the darkness of the deep

We tell ourselves
Trust and take that first step
We will never know what can be
Until we walk across the unseen bridge of faith

I know I carry this burden unnecesarily
In my heart is the knowledge I am held in Gods embrace
But fear causes my eyes to refuse to see
That great things wait at the other end of the bridge.

It's A Cell Phone World
Our society is obsessed with the cell phone
That ever present handy little device
If we could just leave it behind
Sometimes that would be nice

I've observed people literally
Walk into a door
While looking down at their cell phone
As if gazing at the floor

A call a text or Instagram
Excuse me I have to check my mail
O my God!!!my batteries low!!
Please my phone do not fail

I know we're here for dinner
But I must text a friend
LOL and ***
Now it's time to send

Cell phones have their place
I guess in today's society
But there would not be one in existence
If it were up to me

No one can communicate
As in talking face to face
This type of interaction
Has by the cell phone been replaced

I guess that's just the way it is today
O how I long for the days of old
When you had to find a pay phone
In the heat or rain or cold

Drop a quarter in the slot
Or maybe just a dime
Better say what you want
Your running out of time

I'm just a little old fashioned I guess
I like the way it used to be
When two would sit and talk
Without interruption from technology

Waving, See You Soon
I've always been one to stand and wave goodbye
When a loved one leaves my home
Stand and wave and watch till they are out of sight
It's just something I've always done

Like when mom and dad came to visit
I think it was in the spring
When the temperature was starting to warm
And the birds were beginning to sing

We would gather around the supper table
I'd get my Moma to laughing at me
Then she'd look outside and say "It's getting dark"
Then tell dad it's time to leave

I'd walk them both out to their car
Moma always had a few last words to say
I'd hug and kiss her tender cheek
Then I'd stand and wave as they drove away

I'd stand there and wave goodbye
Till mom and dad were out of sight
I only wish I could remember though
The date that marked that night

Moma always waved right back
Till in the distance behind she could no longer see
I waved goodbye see you soon
And Moma waved the same to me

That day I never thought that never again
Would Moma visit my home on a spring time day
I never knew that would be the last time I waved
Goodbye as they drove away

Moma if you can hear look down from heaven
See me as I wave
It's not a wave goodbye but see you soon
For I to am on my way.

RLB

Recalling the last time my mother came to my house to visit.
Someday we will never again wave goodbye.
Love you Moma .
A cross alone would not bear
The weight of mankinds sorrows
The pain the grief the tears
That fill all men's tomorrows

It could not hold upon its limbs
Hate and lust and strife
Not bear one dark misery
That steals so much of life

The cross alone has no strength
To hold sins true weight
Under this crushing load
The cross was bound to break

Until God sent us his only son
His purpose to mend the broken beam
Nails driven through his hands and feet
He sealed the broken seam

The cross is now made whole
No more a broken limb
Because of the blood of Christ
The cross is made whole through him

I laid asleep in the deepest dream
Till the alarm shattered my mind
How quickly came the mornings sounds
Get Up! Is it really time?

I look and see I'm started late
The clock it must be broke
How can it be. Did I set it wrong?
Is someone playing a joke

I quickly arise to meet the day
Prepared for a shower that's hot
Then I recieve a shocking surprise
As I find the hot water is not

I begin to dress in double time manner
It was time to be headed out
Then I turned around and took a step
And my cat shrieked out a shout!!

My heart now racing along with me
I find myself in the kitchen
At first it was eggs and bacon
But due to time now I'm switchin

I'll now have toast from the toaster
I'll make it a double stack
Up it pops in its alloted time
Crispy and burnt and black

Forget the toast I have no time
But caffeine is a must
I find no sugar no creamer no spoon
Looks like coffee is also a bust

Out the door at last I go
Coffee! Man I NEEDED that!
Then low and behold I look to see
Out of the four one is flat

Can you believe because I cannot
BLEEP and BLEEP and BLEEP!!
I call the boss ,"Sorry I'm sick"
And I go back to sleep.

"Grandfather ............."
Grandfather speaks repeatedly
In the same repiticious tone
Repeating the moments away
Till each second he has is gone

Grandfather never lets me forget
The passing of the hour
He sings at his appointed times
As long as he has the power

Grandfather works under a heavy weight
And only when this weight is lifted can he play his song
A sound as cymbals on a drum
Or the beating of a gong

Grandfather talks till his heart winds down
Only then will he stop
Then unlike me ,he will breathe again
When once more is wound my Grandfather clock

Little Things
The little thigs of life
Are to most of no great affair
Such as the warmth of the sunshines rays
Or the coolness of the evening air

The little things of life
Are so often unaccounted
But if we would stop and take notice
We would stand astounded

The little things of life
For such we have no time
The colorful leaves of fall
Or a ringing church bells chime

The little things of life
Come to us each passing hour
A thorny bush of roses
Or a welcomed springtime shower

The little things of life
Fill up life's empty spaces
Let's us know that God loves us
And reveal his many graces

The little things of life
Seem to be missed by our eyes
A trees limb bending in the wind
Or the beautiful azure sky

The little things of life
Quickly appear then they are gone
Such as a smile on a strangers face
Or a lonely sparrows song

The little things of life
Are given to us free
The sound of a gently flowing stream
Or the shade of an old oak tree

The little things of life
Like a word so kindly spoken
Can ease a wearied mind
Or help mend a heart that's broken

A thousand little things
Unnoticed by our eyes or ears
Is a thousand little blessings
Missed throughout our years.

Our next duel is one of her making,
We will each be writing a poem under the title "Things I Have Seen"

What Could Have Been
Heavy on my mind
Is the thought of what might have been
As I look back on the days
The days of what could have been

At this moment I am breathing
Breaths of what I wish had been
Pondering the thoughts I have
Of what I had hoped would have been

These images plaque my mind
Of what If what I desired had been
What might my life be today
If what I desired had truly been

But what I had hoped is not
I realize now it has never been
And as I have grown much older
I know it never will;
Have been.
I'm going through a rough time at my place of employment of 33 years, after getting word that my 33 year employer has stated to a 3 year employee that he, my employer ,thinks I am going to quit ,but that he dosent care. Got to figure out what to do.

The Value of Time
Can we as men comprehend
The value of time
Or is time a commodity much to rare
To be assessed by our feeble mind

Can time be bought for gain
Or for wealth be bought or sold
Does time posses a value
Such as diamonds or as gold

Is time it's self a currency
To be saved as an investment
Should a return be expected
As we prepare for retirement

Could time be a hidden treasure
An object we seek to posses
To add to what time we think we have
Do we over this thought obsess

We as men want so much
Of what we cannot see
For we men know not how much time
Is alloted to you and me

While we are breathing life
Unseen time is always appearing
And at the very same moment
Unseen time is disappearing

So,what is the value of time?
Will the answer by man be ever revealed
Or will this mystery that plaques mans mind
From his knowledge forever be sealed.

Where Is Yesterday?
Excuse me, may I ask,
Have you seen yesterday?
It was here just a moment ago,
But seems to have quietly slipped away,

It looked very much like today,
In its length and span,
It was filled with familiar faces,
And was once held within my hand,

The only difference when compared to today,
Is that yesterday held loved ones dear,
How sad it is that there they remain,
O how I wish yesterday would reappear,

I miss yesterday's cherished moments,
Inside ,my heart knows I shall never find,
Yesterday in tomorrow's hours,
For tomorrow to must be left behind.

Ghostly Rider
A horseshoe made of iron
Strikes against the ground
As the horse carries his rider
To the place which he is bound

The riders horse is quick
Traveling under a midnight sky
Gliding silently through the night
As lightly as a butterfly

The horses stride is long
And like a musket ball in flight
He moves about unheard
Unseen within the night

At last the morning comes
But no rider no horse no sound
Yet there upon the trail
A horseshoe print is found

RLB
This poem was written as a small token of remembrance of all the couriers of the Civil War who carried important orders and messages through enemy territory ,but more so for the brave horses upon which they rode. I have to wonder how many horses carried their riders unseen and unheard through enemy lines to deliver an important message or order.

Historical Images
I love historic images
Life captured so long ago
Of places I'll never see
Of faces I'll never know

Old images hold within
An unknown mystery
When looking into the image
What story do we see

A moment from years now past
A frozen scene in time
Are a joy to look upon
And are a pleasure to these eyes of mine

Ferrotypes made on iron
Ambryotypes on glass
Dageruotypes on copper sheets
Then the cabinet card came at last

I love these beautiful images
With their hues of browns and black and grays
In each a story longing to be told
Is held in these treasured yesterday's

Gazing into the eyes
Of these long forgotten faces
And seeing how it used to be
In those now forgotten places

Brings great joy to my heart
And much happiness to my soul
To see what and who once was
In our not so long ago.

Unseen
The moon tonight shines from the eastern sky
Through the trees crooked and barren limb
And as I look upon this mysterious beauty
I can only think of him

He who placed the moon so high
So that all human eyes might see
Is the same who changed the seasons
That in turn changed the tree

He who gives the moon
It's bright and brilliant light
Is the same who holds the stars
Above the darkened night

He holds in perfect place
Each shining light under heavens floor
With an unseen and a mighty hand
GOD!
To you be praise forevermore .

The Scene Outside My Window
A canopy of gray covers all that lies below,
The trees are leafless and barren,
I can hear the bitter cold raindrops
As they crash into the leaves,
That lie dead upon the muddy ground,
I see colors of only dark gray and brown and black,
As I look into the woods beyond my window,
It is a peaceful scene,
Yet,mysterious and ancient ,
For some unknown reason,
I am taken back to another time,
A much harder time in mankinds life,
But a much simpler time for his soul,
A time when it was more quiet,
Man was more thoughtful ,
The world more serene,
Man more connected to nature,
Nature in all her forms,
Reveals to us such beauty,
Such overpowering serenity ,
If we will acknowledge it,
This scene that at this moment my eyes behold,
May be cold and gray and portray despair,
But it is as beautiful as a sunny mountain meadow in the spring,
For just as the meadow is,
This scene is a picture painted,
By the master of all nature,
GOD.

A chance to strive for what is right

A time to let others know

Why The Bad Attitude
People are hard to analyze,
With the angry way they talk and act ,
Though you have committed no offense against them,
Is this behavior geneticaly just a fact?

My mind cannot understand at all,
Their attitudes so hostile,
You think one could self restrain,
But for most that's just not possible,

Retaliation must be verbalized,
They cannot just refrain,
An unnesasary audible word shoots forth,
Exploding from in their brain,

Over some word or act misunderstood,
But too it they MUST respond,
When the best action they could have taken,
Would have been to just let it alone,

But they will not self restrain,
They are not willing to digress,
The only explanation I can find,
Is they want a fight I guess.
RLB
I wrote this while trying to understand certain family members and friends bad attitudes. Still I don't understand .
I wear the blue of the Union
You wear the Confederate gray
But there are no colors that separate us
On this peaceful day

The cannons bow in silence
The rifles restrain their danger
We soldiers bow our heads
In honor of the baby in the manger

The battlefield rest silently
No sounds of death are heard
Only the sound of angels singing
As they proclaim the written word

"O come let us adore him"!
I hear a soldier say
With a reply of "Christ Our Lord"!
One wears blue the other gray

They come out in reverent peace
To meet upon the field
With only empty hands
No weapon do they wield

Today there will be no fighting
Today no man will die
All are looking to see his star
Shining brightly in the sky

The day will pass too quickly
Then the guns will sound again
But for now let us rejoice with one another
For this gift of the hope of men.

Christmas Time Once More
Christmas time is here again
I can hardly believe
This year has passed so quickly
Soon it will be Christmas Eve

Time to bring out the decorations
Hang the lights and mistletoe
Hope I can find my coat
For it looks like it might snow

I better build me up a fire
In the old fireplace
So I can warm my hands
And Santa can warm his face

I anticipate the arrival soon
Of loved ones at my door
It's going to be one happy Christmas
With their feet upon my floor

We will spend our time together
Making memories that we will cherish
Talking and laughing with one another
As one by one the moments perish

I can tell its Christmas time
For the air smells of sweets
Sugar cookies ,cakes and pies
And numerous tasty treats

Not much time to get the gifts all wrapped
And set beneath the tree
Gifts to give to those I love
Look! I spy a gift for me

Time to take some time
To think upon and remember
The reason we celebrate
The baby in the manger

As I put another log
Upon a fire that now burns low
Within the glowing embers I see
Visions from long ago

Though I am  separated
By the many years now gone
My memories of those precious days
Within my heart live on

O, just one more time Lord
If all those I love were able
How great a Christmas it would be
To have them each gathered around my table

But I know it cannot be
Those scenes that were so long ago
I count these memories as treasure
Valued much more than gold

Listening I can hear the music
Made by trumpet bell and horn
And it tells the wonderful story
Of the morning Christ was born

All is beautiful at Christmas time
The feelings the sounds the sights
The peace within our hearts
His star that shines so bright

I wish the joy could remain
And within our hearts be always near
This joy of Christmas time
That comes to us once a year

Christmas Clocks
What happens to our clocks each year
At Christmastime or near it?
Do they get to much Christmas cheer
Or just the Christmas spirit?

The clocks that were the whole year through,
dependable and steady
Tick hours off like mad when you
Have Christmas to get ready.
Yet, strange to say, those very clocks
Delight in hesitating;
They go to sleep between their ticks
When you are young and waiting.

An Old Pocket Watch
I love an old pocket watch
Hanging at the end of its chain
To look upon its beauty
And to hear the ticking of its spring

To see through its cracked crystal
The beauty of the hands
As they slowly count the moments away
One by one as grains of sand

Painted upon an enamel face
I see the hours that are marked
The hours of ones life
Painted as a work of art

Whose eyes have looked upon you
By whose hands have you been wound
Who brought you to their ear
To hear your beautiful sound

O how I love the music played
So sweet is the watches tick and tock
There is a mystery that I love

Silence Is Golden
Sometimes I ask the question
Why did God give man a tounge
Because most of what man says
When he is speaking comes out wrong

Does man ever think about
The words he is about to say
The damage his words may cause
As they travel on their way

Why do men let emotion
Dictate the words which they speak
A few may overcome this temptation
But most resign themselves to defeat

An unkind word spoken in response
To a really unimportant statement
Only angers the two people involved
And leaves two hearts in lament

We would all be better off
And fewer friendships would be broken
If man could control his tounge
And hold back words not yet spoken

Thanksgiving Day
The day proclaimed as Thanksgiving
Comes to us each November
A day to count our blessings
A day to recall and remember

All that God to us has given
The great and the small
The things we take for granted
God has given to us them all

Too God above I am thankful
For all I have received
When I begin to count my blessings
I simply cannot believe

My beautiful loving wife
A helpmate always by my side
Our warm and simple home
Where we safely within abide

My two little sisters
My precious loving daughter
Memories of my mother
The presence of my father

A bounty of food upon my table
Work for my hands
The freedoms I enjoy
The beauty of this great land

The love of family
Mans most treasured possession
The truth of Gods word
The promise of a resurrection

So much to be thankful for
Though thanks I do not oft enough say
Shouldent everyday we are given
Be Thanksgiving Day?

Psalm 46:10
It is in the stillness and the silence
That the saviours voice is heard
If we will only quiet ourselves
We will hear his voiced word

Can we learn to turn?
From the things that draw us away
Could we set aside some moments?
To listen to Christ each day

Is it possible for us as men
To from our busyness turn?
And listen to Jesus speak
Or do his voice we spurn?

There is so much audible confusion
That into our mind is leaking
O, if we could learn to be still in silence
We would find the voice of our saviour is speaking.

The Men of Picketts Charge
Across the field 15,000 gray
Marched into the hellish fire
Over fallen comrades and fallen friend
And over the blood soaked mire

Over the wall into the gates of hell
Where for a moment they held the ****** ground
Only to be forced away in defeat
Torn and beaten down

Misery and pain and agony reigned supreme
From the Union cannons shot
As it sent death through Picketts men
And now his men are not

The gray clouds of defeat hung heavy
For on this day they would no more march
Many brave and mighty souls set free
Such were the men of Picketts Charge

The Power of Words
The kind of words I love to read
Are words that inspire
Words that spark an ember
That flashes into a fire

Words that encourage
And words that edify
Are easy on the mind
And pleasing to the eye

Words that are motivating
Within their ebb and flow
Can be to someone transformative
As they forward go

A word of optimisim
Can bring forth a clearer view
And be so very refreshing
When you think it could be true

We should always guard our mind
Against negative word intrusion
Allowing only what builds up
To have in our mind inclusion

Every word we read affects our life
In the context of its composition
For all words read hold the power
For mind and thought transition

The Art of Ryme
There was once a man who worked
Who used neither hammer nor chisel nor clay
Yet, worked from mornings early hours
Till evenings close of day

Creating works of art
For his fellow man to see
A legacy to leave behind
For all of eternity

His tool is the rounded wood
That holds the darkened lead
This is the tool he chose
To create the words we've read

He would work and mold and shape
His art into a ryme
As he etched it upon the paper
To be read by all through time

These works of art he made
Held meaning as he would sow them
And when his piece was done
He called his art a poem
