Here's what I see:
A tree
Carved out of the side of a hill
With wooden planks battered into the bark
To form a makeshift ladder

To you, whoever you are,
It could be a crow's nest
On a pirate ship.
You scan the ocean with your twig telescope,
But nothing's there but the water and calm
Nothing, definitely not this messy world.

It could be a castle.
You're a princess,
Lucky you.
Look out over your balcony
Down that stepping stone staircase
That leads to your kingdom.
Lucky, lucky you.

It could be the tree I see,
But I don't think so.
This escape is far too full of an unseen magic
To be as mundane as it looks to my clouded eyes.

You find your refuge here,
A hazy vision that blurs out my reality
And replaces it with your own.
I hope that mine
Never breaks through yours.
I hope that you never have to see the same dark streets I do-
That, to you, this tree is always more
Than just a tree.
I hope that your version of reality
Lasts forever.
I hope you never lose it

Because I know that I will always be curious-
I want to see where that ladder leads you.

When my daddy leaves me,
I will sleep in his button-down, collared shirt.
I will smoke one cigarette each year on his birthday.
I will always sit in the last seat of the row at the movie theaters.
I will set a pack of junior mints down on his grave religiously.
I will learn how to play 'Stairway to Heaven' on the guitar.
I will always address my waiter or waitress as Sir or Ma'am.
I will become lifelong friends with perfect strangers.
I will always keep a pack of minty gum in my car.
I will watch National Geographic documentaries on how the universe works.
I will learn how to make delicious, impeccable chicken fried rice.
I will never, ever spank my children.
When my daddy leaves me, I will remember him
With all the little things I do.

Numb

How does it feel to get lost in my head?
Planting flowers for the long past dead,
They say they know what it tastes like,
But they couldn't learn to like you if they tried.

Another down,
I'm feeling it this time.
Nearly too numb to feel you,
But too numb to breathe.

This static love is killing me,
Like star crossed lovers, and Destiny.

Like a knife,
You can't cut too deep.

Do you know what it's like?
To feel too numb, to feel too numb to feel?
These lines leave me nothing,
But your face again.

Heaven seems a long dead star,
Hell is just another friend.
Sometimes I wonder,
If I'll ever see this end.

I'm nearly too numb to feel you,
Already too numb to breathe.
But another pill is nothing like,
The pain you've achieved.

the sun that bleeds through your blinds
     and makes your eyes burn

I want to be
the cold shower that wakes you up
          and makes your skin tingle

I want to be
the cigarette smoke that inhabits your lungs
          and makes you calm

I want to be
the wind that makes you shiver
and whispers sweet secrets in your ears

I know I'm just
the blanket that you cling to
          when your cold

but I want to be so much more
