I spoke to my daughter today
And she made me smile
There is something about a father
And his little girl.

No matter how hurt,
No matter how many broken promises,
There is something about a father and his little girl.

And when a girl becomes a woman...
And she decides to get to know her father,
Not because its her duty
But because she wants to understand herself

She realizes that her father had a father.
A mother. a life. before her, that shaped him,
Made him, maybe even broke him.

she realizes that despite anything...
Her father is love and she realizes that
Making  the choice to understand him
outside of her own feelings, opinions,

Despite the fact that it is not her duty,
Is the most powerful act of love
And the most freeing act of life for the one on the receiving end.

I spoke to my daughter today,
                             And she made me smile
