You Don’t Imagine Your Sunday School Teacher

You don’t imagine your Sunday school teacher
As a once-upon-a-time young girl
A slender young girl with flowers in her hair
Running barefoot through a summer field

To meet her other self at the edge of the trees
Where the honeysuckle vines cling to each other
You don’t imagine your Sunday school teacher
As a once-upon-a-time young girl

Except sometimes when she pauses and sighs
And her eyes look beyond the Jesus-poster walls
