Lieutenant Vickie Wax was shot and killed with her own service weapon during her attempt at handcuffing a shoplifting suspect.

She had succeeded in placing a handcuff on one hand, and was attempting to cuff the other hand, when a struggle ensued. Lieutenant Wax was knocked down and she lost possession of her weapon. She was then shot. A store security guard and a customer, who had assisted her during the struggle, were also shot and seriously wounded.

The suspect escaped by carjacking a vehicle but later turned himself in. He was charged with first degree ******, two counts of first degree attempted ******, and several other charges. He was convicted of the charges and sentenced to death.

Lieutenant Wax had served with the Baton Rouge Police Department for 27 years. She is survived by her husband, father, two brothers, sister, and two nephews.

WAX, VICKIE SALASSI Vickie Salassi Wax, born Feb. 27, 1953, died Saturday, May 22, 2004, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. She was a lifelong resident of French Settlement. Lt. Wax, a 27-year veteran of the Baton Rouge Police Department, lost her life in the line of duty. Visitation was at Istrouma Baptist Church, 10500 Sam Rushing Drive, Baton Rouge, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Visitation at the church from 10 a.m. until religious service at 1 p.m. Wednesday, conducted by the Rev. Stanley Salassi. Interment in Pine Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, French Settlement. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Laverne Salassi. She is survived by her husband of 26 years, Willie Wax; father, Milbourne Salassi; two brothers, Wayne and Henry Salassi; a sister, Bonnie Salassi; two nephews, Kelly Salassi and Kiley and wife Jessica Salassi; numerous other relatives; and an endless number of fellow law enforcement officers. Pallbearers will be Cpl. Pat Griffin, Cpl. Otis Nacoste, Cpl. Donnie Shirley, Cpl. John Hart, Cpl. James Cutrer, Cpl. Mike McCleary and officers Mike Walker and Samuel Charles. Honorary pallbearers are Sgt. Johnny Wheeler, Sgt. Karl Dunmore and officer Donnie Hallmark. The family would like to thank the numerous law enforcement agencies and the associates of Wal-Mart, 3535 Perkins Road. Arrangements handled by Rabenhorst Funeral Home East.
