why do you sing at the fete
when all the guests have long gone
why do you dance with empty chairs
and jig with cleared tables
why do you go drinking the dregs
from remnants of empty glasses
and gorge on leftovers
meant for the bins
you say you are all at the party
and hold aloft empty wine bottles
to prove you are all having a good time
we see you are all seeking relevance and attention
and dying to be amongst the in-crowds
but your cleaners aprons
and gloved hands
has long told your story
