"A vital means of determining a system's identity is its boundary, along with its rules, its patterns of behaviour and its homeostatic (stay-the-same) principle. When we talk about ourselves or discuss another individual we always tend to describe within some kind of context, boundary or defining characteristic. We like to know where we, and others, β€˜begin’ and β€˜end’. So the persona and the ego of the individual are part of his or her definition and the same goes for a group and, in this particular instance, the family. We need to define, first and foremost, the boundaries of the family system, then its interior focus and, finally, the principle which holds it together." - Erin Sullivan . . .
