when they got slurry
and their parents worried
i laid in bed and dreamed awake

when they went crazy
and drifted through their phases
i used distractions to hide my pain

smoked away the tears
encouraged to face their fears
i just prayed for an escape

taught to rock the boat
able to let things go
i have a death grip on my shame
