1970 I hid in a shallow hole
as explosions tore the earth
around me with impunity.
Communists tried to **** me
and I didn't want to die.
I remembered the fireworks
on the Fourth of July when
we first kissed and held hands.
I have come to doubt what
I once held as true. Wars are
never moral and sinners are
never forgiven for their sins.
