We were married for 30 years
It was the best
Til the day Sarah came home from the doctor
Who said it was inoperable
She fell fast
In those twilight days she told me she wanted me to be happy,
Free to fall in love again
This retirement home ain’t so bad
But it can get lonely
Then I noticed her in the dining room
She was visiting her mother
Rene wore red, her eyes were blue
And she walked with a white stick
I made it my mission to get to know her
My pretext was that I offered to watch over her mother
So we stayed in touch by email and then subsequent visits
We grew closer
One kiss led to another and ultimately more
She was partially sighted and could make her way in the world
She’d won awards for helping others similarly afflicted
Rene became my second once in a lifetime love
So Sarah thank you
I’m about to say I do again
I love you both
