We once had flown
Two hearts as one,
But flew I fear
Too near the sun.
One stone thrown,
Two fallen doves:
Forever in want,
Never in love

By sling and bow
And whip with scorn,
We palm to palm
Apart were torn,
Left head in hand
And hand in glove:
Forever in want,
Never in love

Now present casts
A thousand shocks;
As past departs,
The future mocks
Our buried hearts
(And worms thereof):
Forever in want,
Never in love
