Every time we meet someone
Of like mind, hobbies, what if's
We find we start to fall in love
As we project on them our gifts

I love you's and My dear friend
Fall loosely from our eager hearts
Until the onion is peeled back
And we see in them our faults

Then as fast as we ran into
A friendship or a coupling
We find ourselves backing out of
All promises we were making

We fall first, question later
Why someone else again fell shy
Of the picture we carry in
Our hearts of those we wish were nigh

Idealized romantic flights
Take our minds onto the shores
Of another's precious life
And into their heart's corridors

And once there we find ourselves
In the carnival's mirrored maze
Everywhere we look we find
Another image of our own face

Once we're freed of one glass maze
We are left alone once again
Gliding through life in search of
Our hearts in other loves and friends
