If life is a river
consider its source
mouth of the substance
is divorced from its course

the banks are presented
as sound advice
followed faithfully
until the flood

that torrent consuming
land once thought safe
from the deluge
spawned by the heart

don’t ask the waters
to quickly depart
the surest of journeys
begins at the end.

The poem “The Flood” was inspired by the quote, “A woman in harmony with her spirit is like a river flowing.  She goes where she will, without pretense and arrives at her destination prepared to be herself and only herself”.
