I remember her
like my first sight of the ocean.
The brisk water kissing my legs,
begging me for a swim.

The grit of the sand
as I waded in.
Trusting that those waves meant to
welcome me far from land.

Only her addiction swelled
and swallowed me
before I could savor the air.
Crashing above me, the sun all I beheld.

The light made gems dance.
Reminding me of the warmth
just above the surface.
Peace beyond the violence.

I was trapped in her depth,
as she stole my air for her lungs.
I was too young,
and might have readily given her my breath.

She lives each day like a game of roulette,
no care for what may be lost.
I’ve broken through the surface a few times,
only to be reminded that she loves my hair wet.
First time trying a rhyme scheme in a looong time.
