I'll walk with you
to the road's very end
we'll speak just once more
nothing beyond then.

I'll not look at your eyes
to your direction I won't bend
I know you will look far away
our thoughts would find no common land.

I'll shut my heart of long ago
no words to it would I lend
what yours would choose
are all your own--only you would understand.

I'll turn back a different man
at that road's very, very end
promise, oh promise you won't hold my hand
none of us should  have any reason to repent
* after Christina Rossetti and the Bronte sisters'.
