Honestly I'd just say its lower than that they are just psychopaths who enjoy abusing technology for superficial pleasure. They aren't mature. They are in this racket to make money off other people's misfortune and delight in watching our misery. They also entertain themselves by confusing us and letting us try to fill in the blanks because they use the technology for their own benefit. They are bored out of their minds with simple pleasures so yes they are playing god. I honestly think they may have realized immortality is impossible or is achievable but not desirable so they go around torturing people to make them as miserable as they are because they opened up Pandora box and now hate people who are more spiritually enlightened. Psychopaths come primarily from a point of jealousy and fear. They cause suffering in others because they fundamentally know they are damaged and broken human beings so they need to cause suffering and misery to others in order to feel some form of baseline.
