Wise as Serpents, Gentle as Doves
If you seek anew the sacred
Be prepared to find
The reality of terror
Inside your seeking mind
For that which you encounter
Within the inner world
Also remains hidden
Like a scroll as yet unfurled
Precisely how to read it
Even you don’t know
Though it lives within you latent
Its power does not show
Until it ventures forth
As a seeker in a storm
In search of human hearts
To protect and keep it warm
Holy, holy, holy
The angels do proclaim
Dialectically divorcing
Sacred from profane
All inside the Circle
Indeed is sanctified
Including (alas for humans)
A frightening Shadow side
So if you do discover
A hierophany
You must resist temptation
To praise uncritically
Cultivate the silence
Learn to grow in trust
But remember all things human
Remain ambiguous
The deepest prayer is not
“O Lord, let me do thy will”
For the ignorant will twist it
And use it soon to ****
All that they see as different
Unusual and strange
Dualistically destroying
Any other Name
So let our prayer be honest
Faithful and aware
Of how the coward’s soul
Is afraid to dare
O God! I do believe
Please transform my grief
Make me both dove and serpent
Strengthen Thou my unbelief!
