Worn shoes -
friction burns on tired soles;
griddled pancake strides.

Scuffed leather -
peeling flakes of desiccated fruit
kiss frayed laces;
knotted serpent tongues.

Burning in Nevada;
a thousand miles from carpenter's tools,
a hundred steps from Vegas lines.
