Twas a century ago that the last shell was shot.
"The War to end War"- but that part we forgot.
What puzzles me now is what puzzled some then-
Why the guns kept on firing right till the end?
What purpose was served by killing yet more?
Why more fodder for cannons on the last day of war?
Must all shells be used up; could not one be saved,
Were they competing to put the last man in his grave?
It didn't make sense from beginning to end
God help us if ever we do that again!
