I am dark
I am beautiful
I am stories

Needing to be told
I am poetry
That doesn’t sound as poetic

I am a writer
Who writes to fight
Her anxious thoughts

I am who loves
Never loved
Gives
Never given

I am the dump soil
Outside my window
Smells like it just rained

I am the yellow sun flower
Whose limbs I know
Like they’re mine

I am the cries
And the laughs
And the jokes
That aren’t as funny

I am from the parents
That bore me
I am from the Muslim black girl
That everyone sees as weird

Who gets noticed because
She’s black
Not for what her heart
And mind contain

I am who I am
