We forgive people
in movies for deeds
that in real life
we’d lock up in prison
and swallow the key.

We weep over deaths
we see on cable news
while loved ones die
and our eyes remain
dry as dust.

And we smile at children
causing mischief
in some television town
while shouting at our own
to stop blocking the screen.
