I sat talking to an old man in a pub And a story to me he told~ Of memories that he had in store Of days now gone and old~ He spoke to me about his wife Of the girl that he once wed~ A girl he knew for all of her life And this to me he sadly said~ I knew my love for all of her life From when she first came down from heaven~ I held her in my arms at first When she was born and I was seven~ And being neighbors we grew up together We knew the bad times and the good~ We fell inlove as people do And lived as those inlove all should~ We wed and raised a family But now they've grown and moved away~ And if you listen to my story I ll tell you why I'm here alone today~ My love she grew old as we all do From one thing and another~ She had been the best wife and partner And a real devoted mother~ Last night I knew her last of all When she left me for parts above~ She died telling me she loved me so And just said " this is goodbye my love "~ Today she will be buried And here I am alone~ I cannot live without her And I hate the thought of going home~ I knew my only love from always And for her love I ll always crave~ I knew my only love from always From the cradle to the grave ~.
