Is that you in the black and white photo?
Still so vibrant, despite the muted tone.
I imagine you in a bright blue dress
Laughing with that guy. Was he your future?

In my mind's eye, I see you dancing with
the girl in the polka dots on your left
Did you both pretend to be Marilyn?
Radiant and ready for anything.

And when you grew older, did you look back
on the times when you felt so young and free?
With so much yet to come, you did not know
that life would hurt you in such a cruel way.

The corners of this photo have curled now
From years in a shoebox of memories
Did your fingers trace the surface often?
They may have, but now it is mine that will.

With you in mind, I look up at the moon
And I know I will see you again soon.
