Dawn is not yet
the roses are asleep
first light is coy
the wood is dim and deep

fresh dew on the meadow falls
the wavelets their silence keep
no birdsong springs from the vale
to the sky no bird does leap

from my dream I awake
sweet kisses I did reap
what am I to her now
those memories does she keep?

another dawn shall come and go
time shall through my life seep
it will ask whether new love I've found
only to witness my tears run deep.
