flames flickered

growing tired and yielding little warmth

longing to remember

for whom or what

they burned

You saw each spark,

not with the pity of lost causes

not as the hopeless case on which

energy should not be

wasted

you rose and twirled in a timeless dance

arms spread and lungs expelling the deepest breath

they'd ever known

And fanned the flames
