Boom boom boom the hour is past midnight
My heart is grippin' lonesome an' oh so tight
I never forgot the weight she did give me
She put me in place and told me just how to be

At long last her picture has gone from my shelf
And I've dug a couple more holes in my raggedy belt
Food is gettin' short and my cooking ain't gettin' better
My cap is tattered and the wind took her favorite feather

I lost her on a northern road where the stars lit our way
We both could smell the salt drifting off that silent bay
Crows stood poised as coyotes yelped and whine
Now I'm sitting here lonesome still smelling the wet pine

Can you hear me my lady on this damp and dark night?
Can you you see me lady?, the fog outside is tight
Every night I wish you're knockin' on my splintered lonesome door
Dear baby I need your touch but right now it feels like lore

I sit here tonight with the light of a wicker candle flame
A soul that is weary and a body that's close to hang
My bed is broken with no sound of a beating heart
The night is lifting here but the stars still look dark
