the little child on his father's knee

////

                                                                          ( sweet the song )

No matter that the road is long

We will always be together

Born in New York City

//

Reborn on the highest hill

Weren't free till we became slaves

In Memphis and in New Orleans

• •

Listen to the mother's wail

We walk the wild free wind together

//

With the wino in the midnight cell

With the high school kid in his loveless splendor

//

So uninformed and yet so tender

We stand here together

You touch us every time you breathe

With the full power of creation

Attendant to each other's needs

///

We were born in New York City

Reborn on the highest hill

The lovers come together

Ah yes there you are
