I met you in the midst of a summer’s night Down by the lake. I remember seeing all of the stars Through the calmness of the rain. At your favorite place I met you, But thought I would never see you again.
However, I did see you again On another summer’s night. The moon let me see right through you That second night down by the lake. You always admired the rain And the way it brought out the delicacy of the stars.
The pulchritude of the stars Brought me back again, Even when it would rain. I would always meet you every night Down by that illustrious lake That was cherished so much by you.
But there is something that I never told you. You see, I was always jealous of the stars And of that ever so serendipitous lake Because of how much you admired them again and again In the stillness of the night And in the tranquility of the rain.
And yes, I was also envious of the rain For, in my eyes, I could never be rain for you. I could never shine like the stars at night. The light that you saw in those wonderful, terrible stars Is the only thing that brought you back again To that oh so lovely lake.
But then, you told me that I was the lake In a voice more soothing than the rain. Then, you looked at me again And I saw the light in you Which reflected in my eyes like stars Down by the lake that night.
And ever since that night, I have never looked at the stars Without seeing you.
This is a sestina I had to write for my AP English class. Enjoy.
