Reverse Creation
Patricia Drake Feb 2013
He began with all living things
On the first day of anti-creation
Killing all; be they beggars or kings
No judgment just pure negation

On the second day lights went out
There was no longer night nor day
Only darkness was present throughout
Not a shadow not a tinge of grey

All this darkness destroyed vegetation
Photosynthesis ceased to take place
Everything was beyond devastation
Gasping and lacking in grace

The fourth day destroyed solid ground
He made sure every rock all the stones
Would sink and not ever be found
No one would ever unearth old bones

On the fifth day the clouds were unmade
Rain reunited the sea with the sky
In a marvelously heavy cascade
So the second last day went by

On the last day he reversed creation
Of Heaven and Earth in one blow
It was much easier than damnation
And God sat there and enjoyed the show.
Patricia Drake Feb 2013
It all begins
With pronouns
I becomes the subject
Of my project
Adding you
And collectively we
I choose you and me
And I exclude the he and the she
Until I am certain of we

You and I pick verbs
actions

Inflect them to match
fit
begin narratives

Transitive verbs take objects

You touch
tickle
tease
taste
take skin
*******
lips
me with words

Words have become a clause
But still a simple construction
So, you tickle me where?

For this you need a preposition
To position your tickling ammunition
Do you touch
tickle
tease me ON my *******
*******
thighs
buttocks
****?

Do you feel me INSIDE my mouth
****
soul?
Positioning is envisioning.

Then you use adjectives
To modify descriptions of
Sensory inscriptions
So, gentle complements touch
Soft and passionate kiss
And you become superlative

And adverbs elaborate experience
expression
exploration

You fill me deeply
thoroughly
violently with all that is you

But adverbs can also mean time
Not sweet or cursed time
Or time denoting age
But timing is always important
And grammar dictates
That
Time adverbs are placed
As a beginning or an end
Like a lover's embrace

Thus,
This morning, you woke me with
A demanding "here and now! " and I will reciprocate this, tonight, I vow.

Conjunctions are sentence connectors
And sentences behave like detectors
Bodies balancing with and, but, or
Otherwise subordinate
And the scale tips towards
Conditioning hypotaxis
Making actions a complicated praxis

(before my mind can connect, you will have to pursuade it /pursue it)

But we coordinate conjunctions
Equally
I touch you
You touch me
Exploring
Exploding sensory functions

So, together we cry imperatives
Completing our ****** narratives

Moaning
Whimpering
Begging
Yelling: Please... bind me!
touch me!
bite me!
take me!
come!

Oh! Please, come!

I love the English language... ;)

Sometimes we wish
We were Americans

We would have aced the Spelling B's
Been athletes on scholarships
Or won beauty pageants

Our institutions would compete
And we would win prizes
For accomplishments

If we were Americans
We would thrive with competition

We would live the American Dream
And be rich and famous
I just know it

Sometimes we just wish
Our Scandinavian system favoured people with our talents
Our lack of compromise

Suburbia Danica
Patricia Drake Oct 2013
Our paths are paved here
with smooth black asphalt
lined with s-cut stones
so we won't have to touch
ground
between our semi-detached
houses
and our small fenced gardens.
Our paths lead to nurseries
and to school
and a medium sized supermarket
and they are all flanked with well kept
bushes and lawns
This is Suburbia Danica
Our paths are made like circles
so we stay
Our children don't get lost
and our happiness doesn't
escape.
Again, this year, Denmark has topped the list of The Happiest People in the World. The poem is a footnote...

A Lesson In Morphemes
Patricia Drake Mar 2013
First you need  to learn that they are blocks

compressed meaning and solid like rocks

individual meaning expressed

but combined a new thought is expressed

with a suffix sometimes they merge

and become other classes of words

thus relate becomes rela -tion and added a ship

to relate something becomes rela-tion-ship

the prefixes un-, post-, and de- , be-,for-, and  re-

alter words and direction, you see

but the real tricky thing

is keeping  track of the strings

of meaning and  –fixes, and inflectional endings

Taking Apart Language
Patricia Drake Feb 2013
I had to disassemble it
Our world
Take it apart
Bit by bit
Word by word
Those words
Letters
Full of meaning
Could no longer exist
Anywhere

My friend, my lover
And my refuge
Suddenly turned
Traitor
Turned foul
Deceptive
Dangerous
My friend, my lover
My language

So I began the demolition
Of clandestine concepts
Tearing apart nouns
And adversary adjectives
violently, I separated verbs
And adverbs
Thus impairing indecent interjections
Until our grammar
Finally collapsed

Now there is only silence
Safety in signs like
Minuscule monuments
All bereft of meaning
And I am in mourning
For I have no words
To throw into the void
Only memories
Of distant dialogues
Dreams

I'd like to post "Voucher" with this short explanation.
I went to see an exhibition of Marco Evaristti at the Trapholt Museum of Contemporary Art the other day. It made such a powerful impression on me that I had to write something.
One of his works was a collection of artefacts from a surgery room, a video showing a kidney removal procedure, and information posters about how ***** trafficking (often involving theft and subsequent sale) is common in the 3rd world, where the "donor" seldom gets any compensation.
As part of the artwork, the artist had made vouchers for the public to use if they wanted to donate their kidneys and receive $50,000 in compensation. The reason for the huge illegal ***** trafficking is a general shortage of healthy organs for urgent transplants everywhere.

Ariadne's Yarn
Patricia Drake Mar 2013
I  knew that he would be lost
I had played in the garden before
And despite his heroic might
He would perish like all those before

I had seen many heroes go in
And with crowd cheers thus end their days
For not one had been seen again
Once they entered the legendary maze

I think maybe the beast had got them
The vengeful Minotaurus dwelling inside
Hidden there for shame from my father's eyes
If they met him there'd be no place to hide

I had never really cared for the heroes
Always boasting and trying to seem smart
But Theseus was different from all of them
And he quickly endangered my heart

For he already placed his name
On the list of the heroes to go in
And I knew our love was to end
Before it was about to begin

So I called him and told him my plans
I would lend him some help to escape
Thus a small roll of yarn was sewn
In the hem of his hero's cape

In return for my loving aid
He would come for me if he returned
And he promised to make me his wife
That for my love alone he yearned

But a year passed and Theseus was gone
The were rumours of victory abroad
That my hero had slain the monster
And I saw how my plans were flawed

Needle

This needle goes
Right through
My kevlar skin
Shooting
Essence of
You
Into my veins

I fall

This is
My escape

Hair
Patricia Drake Oct 2013
I took it off
my red hair
because I could
it was mine to take
I took it off
and I feel good
I feel reset
set free
from the image
other people wanted to see
this way
they get to see me

Simulation
Patricia Drake Feb 2013
I
I am in
sin
in absence
in simile
in a simulacrum
of simulation

In simulation
lies my sin
my string of simulations
of conversations
relations
with a simile
another simulacrum
of him

Words are still written
Quietly posted online
So people may read

Comments are still posted
Words are carefully chosen
So no one gets hurt

Rush is still remembered
Mind is yearning for a real fix
Not methadone worlds

I am still addicted
Methadone keeps me in check
It will not cure me

Eavesdropping On The Train
Patricia Drake Aug 2013
He asked her how many
Breaks she needed
From work, possibly
(she must have quit)
Or school, maybe
(no plans, apparently)
How about him?

She answered
It was easy for him
With his job
(a banker)
With his security
(pension plans)
To preach prudence

He continued his campaign
Against letting go
She said for freedom
(from a dead end job)
He argued for stupidity
(no plan it seemed)
And no backup

She fought him
In self defense
Fenced his words
And stripped their relationship
Exposed all
Their personal values
Until they left
The open compartment train

like a vaccum chamber
the suffocating calm
cancer
reveals layers
of masqued chaos
covered in clean canvas
sheets
and under it
the cameleon creeps
survives
through the cracks
and creased papers
ex-communications
conclusions
with no closure
a circus
with nothing but clowns

A Family of Cutters
Patricia Drake Mar 2013
I cut myself
to see the blood
the contrast of red to the white
surface
to check
if there is still a heart beating
underneath the smooth
finish

I cut my children
but they don't notice
it is more like mental cropping.
I cut emotions
into bitesize portions
they can play with
and learn to become good
cutters themselves

My husband is a cutter too
he cuts attention
into little appetizers of affection
and serves it around
wearing a big generous smile
the biggest pieces are reserved
for the screen
and the xbox controller

I cut myself open
online
words gush out of the open wound
luring predators to feed
on dangerous conversations
inviting the Devil to join
as I don't trust the angels
who once lured me into this...
Author's note: I am not a cutter, nor do I cut or hurt my children. Cutting is to be seen as a metaphor for emotional neglect in a dysfunctional family.

Apocryphal Alphabets
Patricia Drake Feb 2013
An angel arose
from atomic adventures
all arteries aching
awaiting
another armed attack
awaiting the Antichrist
and His adversaries
aching for his all encompassing alterations
alternative altars
and
apochryphal alphabets…
