Christmas Without You, Lord
Michael S Davis Apr 2013
Though the house will feel empty,
my life will be so full of you,
that, as my arms enfold nothing,
my heart will embrace you anew.
And when I feel lonely,
Your  presence is one with  my soul.
So, that when my heart's broken,
Your love makes me whole.

Christmas without you, Lord
would be more than I could bear
but, with You in my heart,,
Your love I can share.
Christmas without you
having given Your all for me,
is a Christmas without
any presents under the tree.

See "Christmas Without You" a love poem. As is often the case the love and the experiences that grow out of our earthly relationships teach us about our relationship with God. I realized that with just a few changes, that poem would become a poem that gives insight into the true meaning of Christmas.

A Mother’s Mother
Michael S Davis Apr 2013
I think of a special lady, who has gone to her reward,
Who led a life of faithful love and service to her Lord.
She loved you and cared and clothed you and fed,
And spanked and tucked you into bed;
Then helped you be faithful with your own,
Until now your children’s children are grown.
When one thinks about such things, only a superlative will do
She’s a Mother’s Mother and she taught you well, for you are now one, too.

Doing Time
Michael S Davis Mar 2013
Time apart from you
Is time to reflect on the love we know.
All the time away from you
Will be time for me to grow.
This time without you
Gives me time to be a better man.
Any time when I’m not near you
Shortens the time ‘til I’m with you again.
Time imprisoned in love for you
Grants me the freedom to live.
This time deprived of you
Stores treasures of love to give.

My time, like me, is yours.

Longing
Michael S Davis Feb 2013
Reaching for what might have been,
Stretching toward what may yet be;
Leaning inward to the heart
For the faith to see.

Faith for vision clear and true,
Hope to brave the shadows,
Love to bear the time apart;
Grace for all that follows.

Longing for God’s best for you,
Yet, pining for your presence;
I pray our lives together bring
More of love’s pure essence.

One More Sunset
Michael S Davis Apr 2013
You got up this morning, to face another day;
To go through all the motions, with all that, that implies.
Perhaps it’s your passion, or maybe it’s just the pay,
Just remember it makes a difference in other people’s lives.

I have one more smile to give you, because you saved my life,
One more chance to take and hold my daughter in my arms,
One more moment to see the look of love from my dear wife,
One more day a captive to my grand children’s charms.

I have one more joke to tell with the laughter it could bring,
One more meal to savor its taste upon my tongue,
One more chance to serve Christ, my Lord and King,
One more time to listen as a favorite song is sung.

I have one more rose to lift, to smell its sweet perfume,
One more hour to toil to provide for those I love,
One more moment amazed at a butterfly's costume,
One more game to watch and hear a baseball hit a glove.

I have many, many, many, “one more” things to do,
But this day I just lie here, as I think of life and death;
Pondering just few things that I’d like to say to you,
As I live through one more sunset and sigh another breath.

So, with these poetic words I offer humble gratitude
To you who rolled out of bed and on that day I met
With defibrillator paddles and a get it done attitude,
You each worked to get it done and gave me one more sunset.

With gratitude to the EMT’s, Wesley H. Shuler, MD,

and the staff of Providence Hospital for their skilled life-changing care
on the morning of my heart stopping heart attack, December 9, 2007,  and the week following.

Special thanks to my sister, Cynthia D. Fussell,
for taking a beautiful photograph and letting me see what she calls "Mike's" sunset,
the one I almost missed. This is one sunset that symbolized life not death.

Loneliness
Michael S Davis Apr 2013
By myself without
my family,
my wife,
my child.

Denied,
Rejected,
Severed.

Barricaded
From my love,
For my love,
With my love.

Heartfelt loneliness.

Hold me.

My Shining Star
Michael S Davis Mar 2013
God sent a star - to shine and light the way,
It was a guide to those who sought the light;
To those with wisdom to turn from night to day,
And find in grace, true majesty and might.

Tha star that shone so brightly long ago,
No longer shines to guide me through this life.
God sends us stars who gove a quiding glow;
For me none shine more clearly than my wife.

In her sacrificial care I see, my God, Your love for me;
And in her gracious touch, just how merciful You are.
So I give my thanks to You, O God, who let her be
My love, my wife, my shining star!

I wrote this and gave it to my wife on Christmas day that year. Inspired from a Christmas story, it is more than a Christmas poem. It brought tears to my eyes as I retyped it here. I am so blessed to have her in my life.

Your Way of Love
Michael S Davis Mar 2013
Examined in the Light of First Corinthians 13

I know that my words, no matter how eloquent or beautiful they may be,
are meaningless without love.  My actions can make my words nothing,
but the creaking of a rusty gate. I can speak God's Word with power,
revealing all his mysteries and making everything plain as day and
I can have faith that says to a mountain, "Jump," and it jumps,
but without your love, I am nothing.
I could give everything I own to the poor
and even be burned as a martyr,
but I don't love, I've gotten nowhere.
So, no matter what I say, what I believe,
and what I do, I'm bankrupt without your love.

You are patient and kind; and care more for others than yourself,
You’re not jealous of others' success or conceitedly proud;
You’re not ill-mannered or selfish or irritable;
You don't fly off the handle;
You don't want what you don't deserve;
You do not keep a record of the sins of others;
You are not happy with evil, but are happy with the truth.
You don't pleasure in the shadings of truth,
You don’t force yourself on others, you aren’t ever me first,
You put up with so much in those you love,
You never give upon them;
You always look for the best in others,
You don’t look back, you keep on going and see it through.

I don’t want our love to ever die.
Beautiful words will fade some day
but I want the reality of the life that we live together
to fulfill each of us in its love.
I know I can still be childish in my thoughts, understanding and actions.
I want grow in my loving you
with the maturity, the responsibility and passion of a man.

It is frustrating that we do not always see things clearly.
It’s as if we're squinting in a fog, peering through a mist,
struggling along as best we can.
I know the weather will clear and
the sun will shine bright on our love!
I want us to see it all together,
see us as clearly as God sees us.
I want to see you in all your love and beauty,
knowing your love, and being deserving of it,
of you … of us!

As we continue hand in hand,
There are three things we can do
To keep us moving forward:
Trust God
Hope without distraction,
Love each other extravagantly.
The best of those three is Love.
God has taught me that…
In You.

No, I am not blinded by love. My wife is human. She is also amazing. This was just to let her know that, in all the ways that I fail to live up to the love I feel for her; I recognize how very special she is, and how good she is at loving those she loves, including me.

Sensations of You
Michael S Davis Apr 2013
Just the sight of you...
moments later I remember to breath.

The slightest sound of you..
my spirit is wrapped its embrace.

The merest touch of you...
my heart is massaged in the oil of your love!

The barest scent of you...
my fondest memories are created and awakened.

The kiss and taste of you
my soul's hunger is satisfied.

Sensations of you...
Sensational!

Understanding
Michael S Davis Apr 2013
When our hearts are full of dreams
and we hope for better things,
that’s when it often seems
what matters most is a little understanding.

The same is true in sadness
or when we trip and fall
and all around is madness
we need some understanding through it all.

Through each other’s eyes
as we view each the other’s heart
and heed each others sighs
we’ll always understand and never part.

A Reflecting Wave
Michael S Davis Mar 2013
Oh, the beauty of the moonlight,
As it glistens in the night;
Reflected by the waves,
As they catch a bit of light;
As they toss the moonbeams to me
Across the wide expanse,
The light that’s wafting from above
Is all the more enhanced.

Oh, Lord, as these waves
Are guided by Your hand,
And as they toss the moonbeams
Until they light the land;
Let me catch the light of Heaven
And send it on its way,
That I may glorify Your name
Through all I do and say.

Point of Dependency
Michael S Davis Feb 2013
A Meditation on II Corinthians 12:7-10

There is a point where I turn to You.
A time when I realize that
no one else will do.

I do my own thing, from You I stray.
Then something i can't handle
gets in my way.

I plea for mercy, "Please take it away;"
But, my point of dependency
is here to stay.

Walking in faith is hard to do,
Thanks for that point where
I depend on You.

The moments fly by in our busy, busy lives,
And in our hurried moments, we fling our hi’s and bye’s.
I have cherished every kiss and moment that we’ve shared,
But didn’t understand at all, until at death I stared.
In that awful moment, I saw our selves apart
And understood that I love you with every beat of my heart.

Something's Missing
Michael S Davis Mar 2013
N'er will I forget the day
you said that you were leaving.
Now that you are really gone,
it's always you I'm seeing.

In the morning sunrise
its you in radiance beaming;
In every ruby rose
your pure deep love is blooming;

In every happy smile
your pretty face there grinning;
In the songs of every bird
you set my heart to singing;

In every thoughtful act
your caring touch receiving.
And when its time to say good night
It's your kiss I'm missing.

In these I see you every day
and know its you I missing,
and yearningly await the day
of my heart's love returning.

One more load of clothes,
One more phone call,
One more postponed promise,
One more complaint,
One more box to move,
One more backache unsoothed.
One more favor to ask,
One more day of work,
One more dollar short,
One more throbbing headache,
One more problem faced,
One more solution needed,
One more curse to bear,
One more blessing sought,
One more stolen moment,
One more card to mail,
One more lonely night,
One more day apart, but...
One more day loving you, and
One more day of being loved.

Bound by His Love
Michael S Davis Apr 2013
I don't quite understand
how our friendship has grown.
But, of this I'm sure,
one thing has been shown.

This special friendship,
that we now share,
endures separation;
yet, we still care.

This is not of this world,
but, of the Father above.
Yes, our special friendship
is bound by His love.

©1979 Michael S. Davis
I wrote this after meeting someone at a camp. I was fascinated at the connection we had. I have been blessed with several close relationships that have traversed the years, that began in just this way, proving that we were indeed bound by His love.

It's Magic!
Michael S Davis Mar 2013
There’s magic in my coffee cup,
and laundry folded and put up.
My shirts are hanging fully pressed
ready for me when I get dressed.
My checkbook’s balanced, the bills get paid,
the carpet’s vacuumed, the bed is made;
there’s food in the kitchen and the bathroom’s clean,
the trash is emptied and the plants are green.
And at the start of every day
with a magic kiss I’m on my way.
And as the day draws to a close
your magic touch can curl my toes.
In days filled with joy or strife
You are the magic in my life.
I know on this I can depend –
you'll make the magic happen.

© 2011 Michael S. Davis
This is a tribute and not an assumption that all the things mentioned here are her responsibility.These are just a few of the ways that my wife expresses her love and care for me. We do share tasks. I hope there are many things she can say about me and the magic i bring to her life. I wrote this because I did not want her to think I took these things for granted. The real magic is I don't know how she does it all.

for tolerating all the little things that don't,
for assuming I am always concerned about you,
for missing me the way I miss you,
for watching my favorite shows with me,
for not making me watch yours, but letting me anyway,
for letting me work a puzzle while watching your show,
for working a puzzle instead of commenting on my show,
for understanding wanting you all to myself,
for wanting me all to yourself,
for accepting the faith and trust I place in you,
for the faith and trust you place in me,
for looking at most things the same way I do,
for looking at some things in ways I don't,
for listening for my heart in my voice,
for seeing my heart in my eyes
for looking beyond my failures,
for believing in me,
for being the person you are,
for loving our children,
for our children respecting you,
for helping me to be my best me,
for being just who you are,
for desiring my caresses,
for longing to touch me;
for the contentment of your sighs,
for the passion of your kisses,
for the comfort of your hugs
for your friendship.

This Tree Bids Me Bow
Michael S Davis Apr 2013
I stand awed before this tree in Autumn.
My eyes feast on the beauty they behold.
Against the canopy of bright blue heaven,
Leaves stand out in crimson and gold.

I stand chilled before this tree in Winter.
It stands startk and lifeless as stone.
Sad gray skies seem to frame and center
Naked branches lifeless as stone.

I stand trembling before this tree in Spring.
Once dead branches sing forth with life.
Here I witness an Easter morning
That ends all of Winter's great strife.

I sit content under this tree in Summer,
Enjoying the shade of its boughs.
I give thanks to God, the Tree-Maker,
Before Him this tree bids me bow.

And bless our God above.

You fulfill my sweetest dreams
And supply a warmer glow

So with joy I overflow.

I choose to love you so,
That I fill your thoughts, too;
Then you may always know,

Heavenly paradise, that one place of bliss;

I enjoy Eden’s blossoms, as I nuzzle your hair;
And my heart has no doubt that I’m actually there
Surrounded by beauty of celestial kind;
Engulfed in nirvana that transcends my poor mind.
The light of that place that forms when we meet
Exposes a beauty from our heads to our feet,
And could not exist outside of the place
Our hearts sculpted out of time and of space.
With you in my arms, I experience rebirth
And know the sweet ecstasy of heaven on earth.

A Rose's Passion
Michael S Davis Feb 2013
Waiting for the nurturing warmth upon its face,
Hoping for a reason to unfurl her velvet lace;
Wrapped snugly in its bud are treasures soft and sweet,
And only in release can her beauty be complete.

The passion of a rose is wrapped up nice and tight,
And its potential waits there, beyond the strongest might.
It opens to the season's mysterious caress,
And lifts its face to heaven for God to touch and bless.

He touches those soft petals with the blush of love
And releases from its heart a fragrance born above.
Just below the petals is a sacrificial thorn,
And in those lush green leaves, hope for life reborn.

Its passion is released, and seems so quickly gone,
But the love for which it sacrificed goes on and on and on.
With its fragrance all used up, its velvet tarnished, too,
Then its crystal vase is empty - its passion is in you.

We ought to fill them with a desire for the

As the salt of the earth

We ought to invigorate them with

The Middle
Michael S Davis Feb 2013
Not the oldest or the youngest,
not the first or the last,
Just like icing on an Oreo™
or a sailboat's tallest mast;
It's where two close friends will put you
as you all go into town,
Or where you'll put yourself
when those two begin to frown;
It's where bees sip sweet nectar
from a yellow daffodil,
Like a bull's-eye on a target
or an axle on a wheel;
It's the safest place to be
in fiercest hurricane
And where the grass grows greener
on the quiet country lane;
It's where Jesus hung between two thieves
to die for you and me,
So, make a difference in the middle,
it's the place you're meant to be!

Through the Haze of Life
Michael S Davis Feb 2013
In the early morning stillness, I sit upon the shore.
As I gaze across the waters, I long to see much more.
The other side, a passing boat, a storm that’s on the way;
Oh, to see through the haze that shrouds this newborn day.

The Lake of Life is much the same; a haze makes short the view.
But, as the Day of Life goes on, the Son of God breaks through.
He lights up all the world around and scatters all the haze.
Three things He gives to light my way, as I go through this day.

The first is Faith, yes faith in Christ, to keep me in life’s storms;
To guide me every step I take, until He leads me Home.
And next there’s Hope to pierce the haze, to see the other side;
And Hope that after all is done that with Him I’ll abide.

And last comes Love, blessed Charity, the Greatest of the three;
For God is love and love He did, when Christ died on the tree
With love He died to break sin’s bonds and make our weakness strong,
So, take by Faith, with Hope, His gift of Love,
And greet life’s haze with song!

The Key
Michael S Davis Apr 2013
Who knows why there were walls so high
around your heart and mine.
Perhaps there were just too many hurts
and things that made our souls pine.
So painful brick by brick
and impenetrable stone by stone
The walls around each of hearts
climbed until we each were shut off and alone.
We did not know that our walls
each had a window,
Until we met and saw amidst our walls
the portals through which our lives were aglow.
And in that glow we found the doors
that would let each enter in
Beyond the walls and with the other
a new life begin.
We found the key that let us
unlock those doors and each pass through,
And let the trusting, understanding, unconditional love
be the only thing between me and you.

wonderful singing in my heart;
And then again,
there is no describing the
aching it endures when we’re apart.

When you are part of my day,
I can’t explain the
unbelievable completeness of my being;
And then again,
how could a heart so whole
feel so broken when you’re away.

When you are with me,
I am content
with my heart so full of you;
And then again,
when you are gone
it rings so hollow and emptily.

When you are by my side,
my heart smiles
with pure and crazy delight;
And then again,
without you even near
the thought of you makes my sad heart bright!

I’m with you all the way.

When all of this is over
Or if it never ends.
One thing you can count on,
If it’s on my heart, your heart depends;

No matter where this road leads
Or what burdens we must bear
We’ll share the load together
Because, always, I’ll be there!

When I Found You
Michael S Davis Feb 2013
I found myself;
   My love in your embrace,
      My heart in your love,
         My hope in your dreams,
           My compassion in your care,
              My partner in your work,
                My strength in your eyes,
                   My ambition in your respect,
                      My companion in your touch,
                         My home in your kiss,
                            My body in your desire,
                               My emotions in your heart,
                                  My rest in your presence,
                                     My contentment in your joy,
When I found you!

You Are . . .
Michael S Davis Apr 2013
You Are . . .

the quiet place where my mind likes to rest.
the smile that inspires me to be my best.
the comfort when life’s storms around me blow.
the sunshine and fill me with your glow.
the joy that emboldens me to face the“whys?”
the heartthrob when I see the love in your eyes.
the love that makes life more than it’s ever been.
the voice that speaks “I love you” again and again.

Our Long Night Apart
Michael S Davis Apr 2013
The night is long while we’re apart.
The night continues . . .
     the clock keeps ticking . . .
          and the sunrise waits.

Our fears are exposed with each bump in the darkness.

Our frustration grows when every glance at the clock
reveals that daylight is no nearer.

Our hearts reach out
through the blackness of the distance between us,
to embrace in the warmth of the sunshine of our love.

Our eyes then focus on the new day that will end
our long night apart.

A Vision of the Cross
Michael S Davis Feb 2013
Lord, I see you on the cross each day,
Through the things I do and say.
You feel the bite of a soldiers scourge,
When a brother's fall my actions urge.

A crown of thorns Your brow does pierce,
While I sin in anger, proud and fierce.
Your wounds a purple robe does burn,
As mockingly, Your love I spurn.

With hands and feet by nails ****** through,
You die the awful death I'mdue.
And as Your side the sword does cleave,
Your precious blood flows forth, for me.

Forgive me, Lord, my heart renew;
I confess, right now, my sin to You.
Your strength I need, for I'm too weak,
To live the words which now I speak;
Be glorified through me this day,
In everything I do and say.

Full of Hope and Promise
Michael S Davis Apr 2013
It seems a lifetime of years ago,
a precious child was born,
full of hope and promise
like the sunrise every morn.
In the years from that day since,
she’s faced many a circumstance.
some would bring her loving joy,
others painful hurt;
but in the sunrises now ahead,
one thing we can assert . . .
This precious much loved child,
now a woman full grown,
has a future as full of hope and promise
as on the day that she was born.

Standing Within
Michael S Davis Feb 2013
A Meditation on Roman's Chapter 3-5

Standing
Before the Judge
Justified by faith.

Standing
Before the altar
Sactified in peace.

Standing
Before the cross
Redeemed and set free.

Standing
Before the tomb
Glorying in the resurrection.

Standing
Before the mercy seat
Covered by the blood of the Lamb.

Standing
Within the sanctuary of His Grace,
Facing the hope of His glory.

Free
Michael S Davis Apr 2013
How can I explain the freedom
Our love has given us;
Freedom to be ourselves
Without  pretense or a fuss.

Into each others' eyes we gaze
And see a wonder there
That transcends the whole wide world
With a trust so rare.

It’s a freedom we cant’ hide
And threatens those in chains,
Who can’t understand our love
And must tolerate their pains.

So, we just live in patience
And endure this time apart,
Knowing we have this freedom
That comes only from the heart.

Love's Gravity
Michael S Davis Apr 2013
Oh how we dread
being pulled apart
by our circumstances;
but we thrill
as the bonds of our love
draw us back to each other,
closer than before.

WOW! (Part 2)
Michael S Davis Apr 2013
It’s been a few years since you stood at my door
And I looked up and my jaw hit the floor
My eyes lit up and one word leapt out
The one word that fit, that word was
WOW!
It was your face, your eyes, that smile
And of course the dress you wore with style.
But that wow went deeper than the rose of your lips
And much wider than the curve of those hips.
It was a WOW, secretly spelled MOM,
A role you perform with aplomb,
Words of wisdom you share from your heart
With a simplicity you’ve raised to an art.
And a WOW for each battle you’ve fought
As you faced whatever life brought
And turned every minus to plus
For your kids and yourself and for us.
More than ever the word that applies
As your presence now graces my eyes
And I remember our wedding vows
The word that still fits is...
WOW!

I Will Be With You
Michael S Davis Apr 2013
It’s so hard.
You want to do the right thing, things.
Your children are so precious and so in need of your care.
You ask yourself, “How can I do it?”
You don’t know the answers.
You’re scared.
You don't know what to do.
You don't know anyone you can depend on.
I know what you can depend on.
It’s what you have always relied on.
It’s the reason there has always been food on the table.
It’s the reason there has always been a roof over your head.
It’s the reason you have three beautiful children.
It’s the reason you have overcome every painful obstacle
this old world has put in your path.
It’s the reason you love so freely.
It’s the reason you’re loved so deeply.
You know it’s always been true.
God has promised “I will be with you!”
You can depend on that.
You can depend on Him.
That’s why you are going to make it.
That’s why all of your needs will be met.
That’s why you will be able to take care of your children.
Listen and believe, as God whispers in your ear,
“I will be with you.”
