Retirement
Maggie Sorbie May 2022
Until I retired
I didn't notice

the colours of the dew on the grass
and the shape of the water droplets
the scent of the flowers after the rain
the greenness of the fields

Having more time to spare
I have noticed changes everywhere

I Don't Understand
Maggie Sorbie Mar 2022
I don't understand computers
technology, mobile phones-
things that are not tangible
but
I do understand
nature's cycle
like the journey leaves undergo
from falling off
in the autumn
and
reappearing
in the springtime
as buds and blossoms,
migrations and hibernations
of birds and animals,
all interdependent
on each other
and their environment

Maggie's Weather Poem
Maggie Sorbie Feb 2022
As the sun shone brightly
after the storms the last few weeks
I saw  a Crocus growing through the lawn
The beauty of spring flowers
thriving
brings joy to my heart
as does the sound
of little birds singing

What To Do For the Best
Maggie Sorbie Feb 2022
The storms with destructive winds
of over two hundred miles per hour
in the atmosphere
make global warming more apparent
and climate change more real

"What to do for the best?"
I asked myself
Maggie Sorbie Jan 2022
A drop of rain in the summertime
when the climate is hot
makes a blackbird sing
and petals of the flower open
for which my wifi isn't necessary

The Heron
Maggie Sorbie May 2020
As the sun rose in the east

The heron opened his wings

curled as he flew

over the Oblique and the trees

which were in full bloom

until it was out

of sight

TIME FOR THE RAIN
Maggie Sorbie Apr 2020
I opened my eyes
to my surprise
I saw fluffy white clouds in the sky
that we had not seen for a few weeks
A little rain would do the parched earth good
letting the flowers and trees
continue to grow
natures way of giving us what we need
and for which I am thankful

Sheila's Outlook
Maggie Sorbie Mar 2020
Imagine
no planes
no boats
no trains
no cars
for a few weeks
and
nature restoring
its balance
more than
Kyoto ever has done

Spring Equinox 2020
Maggie Sorbie Mar 2020
The grass is green today
Hip Hip Hooray
First day of spring
and not a cloud in sight
The sky is blue
Standing here
on my feet
dictating this poem
sat down
wondering when
we can go out
to play
again

The End

My Daughter's Song
Maggie Sorbie Mar 2020
Every little cell

Every little cell
in my body
is well
I'm so glad
that every little cell
in my body
is happy
and every little cell
in my body
is well

Change
Maggie Sorbie Mar 2020
The changing of the season
from winter to spring
allows the workers to re-begin
the installation of the alarm system
windows and doors
and the slate roof
We hope it will be all done
by next winter
appreciated by all

The Builder's Bum
Maggie Sorbie Feb 2020
The builder's *** exists
(I have recently seen one or two)
I have been wondering why
I now realize they can't do their belts up tight
with all the bending and lifting they have to do

Scaffolding
Maggie Sorbie Feb 2020
Scaffolding is a skilled job,
I realized
as are all other jobs
in the building trade
Working in all weather
All credit and thanks to them!
Without their know-how
we would not have shelter

Mud
Maggie Sorbie Jan 2020
Mud
The kerfuffle
was caused by the workers
The stress made people tremble
and seemed indefinite

Hippos like mud
and children sometimes too
They jump and splash in the mud
thinking it's good to do

Creating Sound
Maggie Sorbie Jan 2020
Creating a void
by spinning around

making a sound

we found

Rain
Maggie Sorbie Jan 2020
The deluge has been pouring down
for how long, I wonder?
It is not just a drizzle
that gets into your bones
and it's not raining 'cats and dogs'.
Pitter-patter raindrops
Pitter-patter raindrops
all around, on the ground
I don't think it needs it
I wish some spring sunshine
would come our way

Murmering
Maggie Sorbie Dec 2019
Was it a flock of starlings
or mistle thrushes
I saw murmuring for a moment
in the dark sky?

Realizing they were actually starlings
not mistle thrushes
I deleted them
from my mind

and watched as the starlings continued their orbit
to a warmer county

Peas (in honour of Keith)
Maggie Sorbie Dec 2019
It was inevitable
that both the split peas
and the seaweed
would be ready
before the record on the stereo
had finished

Still a long time to come
before the sun
is in the northern hemisphere
and we can plant more peas

The Morning Sun
Maggie Sorbie Dec 2019
As the morning sun rose in the east
the sky was blue with a bright light

and the bees were busy,
encouraging us

to

and collect the wine glasses
from the night before

Reading And Writing
Maggie Sorbie Nov 2019
I was reading and writing
about the magnetic fields
that surround the earth

In the low autumn sunshine
the illusions of colours change
as leaves leap and bound along the ground
leaving that last word- quantum -
out of the equation
altogether
