When I was a child, I wondered if monsters really did exist.
I would check under my bed and in my closet,
not because I was scared, but because I was curious.
And when I was a child I learned that they do.

Monsters don't always appear as people would expect
They commonly hide in our cities, schools, and sometimes our families.
They scarey part though, they can hide in our hearts,
our tongues,
or even our subconscious thoughts.

I met my first monster while I was still a child.
And while most would think it appeared to me with a shaved head,
driving a truck with confederate flags,
and a ******* tattooed inside his lip
so racial slurs can roll unfiltered off it's tongue.

My monster was the mother of my best friend.
She stood looking down on me like a doctor looks at a forty year old fry cook.
And while I never did understand why the brown of my skin resembled filth in her eyes,
or how she could look at a child, with that look of disgust.
When I was a child, I could understand, that these monsters do exist.
if you’re going to try, go all the
way.
otherwise, don’t even start.

if you’re going to try, go all the
way. this could mean losing girlfriends,
wives, relatives, jobs and
maybe your mind.

go all the way.
it could mean not eating for 3 or
4 days.
it could mean freezing on a
park bench.
it could mean jail,
it could mean derision,
mockery,
isolation.
isolation is the gift,
all the others are a test of your
endurance, of
how much you really want to
do it.
and you’ll do it
despite rejection and the
worst odds
and it will be better than
anything else
you can imagine.

if you’re going to try,
go all the way.
there is no other feeling like
that.
you will be alone with the
gods
and the nights will flame with
fire.

do it, do it, do it.
do it.

all the way
all the way.
you will ride life straight to
perfect laughter,
it’s the only good fight
there is.

there is no grain of salt
or quote of the day
no kernel of truth
or anything to say
no worthless platitudes
not mentioned in title
or anything in particular
to make anyone smile
There is no meaning
to thoughts a rambling
or reason of being
leaving brains scrambling
don't meant it, don't say it
don't feel it, don't play it
don't kiss goodnight
if the morning light
doesn't include fingertips
tracing skin
followed by moist lips
inviting sin
no apathy against word play
on such a beautiful day
no understanding
just delirious
of a first kiss

She came from a favela
Steep ***** above Rio
Color of dark chocolate
And vanilla of mestizo

Worked the narrow streets
Walked them like a queen
Bad boys knew her beats
Her stir did leave a sheen

In translucent woven sheets
Swaying hips and pouted lips
Bad cops along her favela beat
Always whistling as they glimpse

Flava of favela became queen
Said so long to to steep streets
Tin built hut and streets unclean
Became the Queen of Rio

Until December
Will you remember
Will you remember me
Now September
Still a spark left in me
Stoke that spark
Spark as stark
As cold December
Keep me in your memory
Come new year
Don't know where...
Don't really care
Where I will be
Chasing embers
Once remembered
I'll remember
The spark
That stokes my ember
Come December
