What's before us
is quite enough
why look over the fence
seeking an unknown stuff?

here is the supreme test
though it's rough and tough
when self has overcome itself
it leaves no gulf.

The Seasons*
Dr Peter Lim Sep 2020
Come to me in the dearest cheer of spring's happiness
visit me in the bleakest hour of lonely winter
as my mood in autumn sinks into gentle greyness
I'll reflect upon the sunshine of summer-

life is enshrined in every season's splendour
how love bursts into song in the heart of the lover
when I fade away as the last flowers in slumber
memories of me will you still treasure?
* after Shelley,  Rupert Brooke, Christina Rossetti and the Bronte sisters'.

The Zen of Daily Living
Dr Peter Lim Sep 2020
For the ease of living of every person
stay calm-- don't be overwrought
problems are as common
as pebbles-- though never sought

what will hold me in balance
is my faith and patience in heart and thought
letting go in humility and nonchalance
what has gone before I cheerfullyforgot

What Am I?*
Dr Peter Lim Sep 2020
What am I?
never mind
I've no name

you do not see my face
a nobody of the human race

yet I breathe and move
invisible in every place

I have life
am never static
though to no abode
do I stick

I drift and I wander
in infinite space

I am change
constant flux
transformation
a crossover from yesterday
a moment in time's spectrum
a bridge to future's way

whether night or day
in silence you can feel me
in the smile of the child
the warmth of the mother
holding her tiny one
the  kind stretching hand
reaching out to the destitute
the lonely, the desolate
the marginalised
the forgotten women and men

the stars and the moon
they keep me company

like all of you
sadness moves me
to tears-
mankind lives
in melancholy

at the deepest hour of night
when gentle breezes distil the air
you would find my whisper there

Hideaway
Dr Peter Lim Sep 2020
The self needs
   an inner hideaway
   dark secrets it holds
which must be kept at bay

   they gnaw and they fester
afraid to surface in the light of day
life is lived in lies and deceit
fear makes the person its perpetual prey

What's In A Name?*
Dr Peter Lim Sep 2020
A name---its role
  is to individualise
  cave-people never knew such
  others they didn't agonise

  when I see you
  a human being I recognise
I need no name--just call me ' Friend'
  that would more than suffice.

Life's Conundrum*
Dr Peter Lim Sep 2020
The mind
is a foreign land
to the heart-
its language the latter
can't understand

question not
in what direction
love would bend

it has no explanation
either at start or end

only at the periphery
does the mind holds its stand
the heart is the owner's continent.
* after Emily Dickinson
Dr Peter Lim Sep 2020
A rhymed* life? hardly
only that in jagged lines
wrongly tuned and notes
dissonant as in a marred symphony

a charmed*  life?  who said?
dreams appear to disintegrate
love is a short-staying visitor
farewell it too quickly bade

a tranquil life? don't you believe
storms bellow in hours successive
night is dreary, long and sombre
the restless heart knows no relief

a meaningful life? here the sage does lie
most struggle and ***** without purpose
the voice of the poets is muzzled in despair
with silent tears they write their heartbroken verse.

...by which time
Dr Peter Lim Sep 2020
..by which time
the river has run its course

  by which time
  winter has smothered
  the last autumn rose

  by which time
  all leaves have turned grey
the barren garden has nothing to pose

by which time
the stars have grown weary
not a single light--beam glows

by which time
love has its farewell bade
all feelings wither and close

You’ll love
Somehow
You’ll love
At last            (copyright of Jen's)
-----------
For love
so long I did search
in patience I waited
for it to perch
on the nest of my heart-
never mind if it should come
at its chosen time
from hope I will not part

if such love were true
we'll love at last
though it be the latest
winter hour--
this is the ultimate test
of our unfailing trust.

Convoluted Time
Dr Peter Lim Sep 2020
How come
   the present does seem
   remote and the long
   past as though recent?
   yet looking at the prism
   of time, the future
   appears to have happened
   in conjecture and imagination

   not three
  but a single person
  living in three dimensions

  what counts above all
  is individual freedom
  assured so seldom--
  too many indeed
  are trapped in self-prison

  to make sense
of this perpetual conundrum
a long net of life
I'll hurl to harness
the divisive
and have it transformed
into a single collective
I'll know sans doubt then
I've arrived at the wholesome.
