immersed in a liquid
full of messengers

the geese are leaving
all is gray and luminous
this cool cloudy day
dry leaves are on the pavement
they tumble by in the breeze
a black dog pads past, nose down
pigeons fly up to safety
i check the time on my phone
and enter the train

dry curled maple leaf
scudding along the pavement
a truck rolls over

loving without strings
living it with all your heart
demands inner strength
you cannot and should never
blame your love for not caring
they are them and you are you
sometimes what feels forever
is not in the cards we play
the queen of hearts gone missing
though you were sure you held her
so shuffle the deck again
pick up your hand and play it
someday you may win

lying in the dark
staring out a window
a cold moon shining
ghostly shadows crawling
across the walls and floor

quiet street, late night
red across wet black asphalt
stoplight reflected
