A thatch of forest;
Green, welcome rest,
All around, as far as the eyes can see,
The dead and dying, spread out like the endless sea.
Dada Olowo Eyo Jul 2018
Sunshine filtered through the crack,
And with it a waft of warmbreeze,
I struggled out of the deep freeze,
Only to see everything still in uninspiring black.

Special anti stupid squad,
Special anti useless squad,
Special anti buffoonery squad,
Special anti senseless squad;

Getting out of hand,
Daily harassments,
Of people of state,
Existing, but just barely,

Brazen extortion,
Shameless shakedowns,
Illegal raids,
Accidental discharge!

The super highway is lit,
Keyboard warriors are miffed,
Cyber mercenaries want blood,
Digital overlords call for war!

But vagabonds in power care less,
They demonstrate total disconnect,
Throwing around meaningless platitudes,
And high sounding refrains;

But why so many?
Arbitrary creation of demonic units,
Specialising in delivering sorrow,
To ordinary folks in the streets;

Why not ask yourselves,
Reasons the youth are agitated,
Why not make diligent inquiry,
Into rise in criminality;

The answers are not on the moon,
Look around you,
And see the gulf,
Between rich and poor;

A country that boasts,
Of the richest persons on the black continent,
Male or female,
Champions the poverty comity of nations;

Therein lay the solution,
Return to the people,
Their stolen past, present and future,
And see if need be for your SPECIALS.
Only coming to light ever more increasingly, are the heinous acts of poorly trained and mentally deficient police officers of the  Nigerian Police Force special units created to fight armed robbery and cultism. These sadists have now been exposed by citizen reporters to be bloodthirsty, greedy extortionists that arbitrarily raid young men that have tattoos or wear dreadlocks. The discomforting silence of powers that be lends credence to speculations that the rogue officers have backers in high places. Now it is left for ordinary folks to negotiate their existence by giving fire-for-fire or simply bring lame ducks to be picked off at will. ACTION!

I have frolicked among the ashes,
And I have kissed the bottom of disgust,
Poverty has adorned my back,
And wretchedness become my close companion;

Deserted by goodwill,
I am destitute,
In the ruins of failure,
Fate has left me no joy;

The sun rises upon my defeat,
And sets on my immense sorrow,
Daily I wallow in agony,
Drown I, in cheerless wantonness;

Tattered dreams inflicted my senses,
They rob me of sleep,
I lay awake, trembling,
Fearful of the shameful morning.

Teeth sunk in the jugular,
With no hope in sight,
Then one, two, the whole herd!
Bravely rekindled hope for one last fight!
Dada Olowo Eyo Oct 2013
I want to make you,
A better version of yourself,
Always, this I want to do,
Only seconds on any shelf.
I feel again.
Dada Olowo Eyo Jul 2019
Homeless, sleeping under the skies,
Hungry, scavenging among rotten piles,
Naked, shivering in the wild,
Sick, hanging on to dear life.
Dada Olowo Eyo Apr 2019
Higher life form,
Lower form of life,
Might is right,
But what right has might?

Hard work no be money,
Make you ask the man wey dey push trolley,

Until the day wey him go retire.

Never quit fightin',
Always shovin' and strugglin',
Making sure the ends are meetin',
Even when the Missus be buggin'.
Happy Fathers' Day .2013.

The many, undeserving dead,
Deserve national outpouring,
Every single poor soul,
Cut untimely from fame or fortune;

No one soul is made more,
Is worthier than the other,
All came from the earth,
And it hath the last say;

So why demonstrate double standard,
Roaring silence when calamity comes afishing:
Abductions, medical neglect, ritual murders,
Innocent blood shed wantonly daily?

The transience of power is earth bound,
Only the heavens will forever stick around,
The sun rises on the day of reckoning,
Be prepared, oppressor, your time is nigh.
In commemoration of a black day in the history of Nigeria, young people express disappointment that after one year nothing has changed about the brutality of government against unarmed protesters exercising fundamental human rights on 20-10-2020.

The hypocrisy in high places is evident with the way government pampers terrorists and cracks down on peaceful demonstrators.

The collective spirit of the people of state has defied all kinds of intimidation and continues to fight for a better nation-state that respects human life and makes living in Nigeria a permanent sweet experience.

Where were you,
When love threw me lemons;
Tormented by blonde demons,
Where were you?

Something is broken,
Inside of the people,
They'd **** for a token,
And jump on any ripple.

Going to be forty in weeks,
Still have no clue,
Mother thinks my hair's due,
But not falling for her old tricks;

Midlife crisis is at hand,
Job security tops the list,
Should I join a local band,
Or a ******* at the very least?

A son and a daughter,
Then we close shop,
Both are not a bother,
Unless there's a naughty drop;

Recently rounded up oldies,
1408, Shutter Island and Resident Evil,
Alone, without any cronies,
I'll just try to be civil.
Forty in hours, actually.

Stroking these one-o'-one keys,
And making rhymes of the lot,
Comes to me hardly without some thought,
Especially in the cool company of a fresh evening breeze.
In commemoration of World Poetry Day 2018.

No one can tell my story,
Any better than I experienced them,
Those cold and trembling nights,
When my body ate it's own fat;

Felt abandoned by my parents,
Left to the mercy of strangers,
That took me in, forgot to feed me,
Watched me shrink to the bone.
Between the years 2002 and 2007, my whole life was led one day at a time, many times hunger shook me like a fever, felt betrayed by my parents for sending me into the world to find mercy in the home of strangers.
Dada Olowo Eyo Feb 2013
When my soul folds up,
And the world crowds me in,
Wondering where my spirit's been,
I don't give up;

Friends and family desert me,
The job no longer feeds me,
Afraid for the coming dawn,
I don't give up;

Don't let me go,
Oh, my Lord,
Don't let me go,
Dear Lord, I cling to you;

Storms threaten my industry,
Tongues wag at my childlessness,
The pressures press me in on all sides,
I don't give up;

Don't let me go,
Oh, my Lord,
Don't let me go,
Dear Lord, I cling to you;

I don't give up
'Cos I know my tomorrow's bright,
I don't give up
'Cos I believe help's in sight,
I don't give up
'Cos I see the owner of my soul coming to my fight.

Don't let me go,
Oh, my Lord,
Don't let me go,
Dear Lord, I cling to you.
A song

The days I fall hardest,
Are the ones kindest,
And were I to surrender,
Then all go assunder.

****.
Tribe.
Hashish.
Nonsensical sense of entitlement.
There's this tribe in Nigeria that has prides itself as being descended from  Jewish tribe and has never stopped wailing about seceding; interestingly, the title of this poem is synonymous with a natural herb some folks get high on :)

But you always did ******* away,
Now you want to ride shotgun,
Your fairness is not in your colour,
This I see as you lay, beautifully, beside me.

This bridge cannot stand between our love,
I'll take up wings from above,
Run as far as my heart can take me,
Because with you is where I'd rather be.

Her eyes intoxicate me,
I'm up, all night,
Praying, they'll be,
My guiding light.
Dada Olowo Eyo Feb 2019
Bound by mind,
Bound by thought,
Bound by vision,
Bound by lack;

So I sell my sovereignty,
And give away all my rights,
Turn in my opportunities,
And auction all my needs;

At every campaign rally,
I am here, sweaty,
And they are there, jolly,
Same cyclical untruths;

But do I care?
I am in love with them,
My tormentors-in-chief,
Enslaved to serve.
Nigerians will go to the polls to elect a president for the next four years. They really have a choice between two old horses and a couple fresh faces - for those who've accepted cruel fate, they'd take whatever comes in form of handouts, peanuts and wait out the next four years in abject penury.

Each crumb a lifesaver,
Eat to your heart's rejuvenation,
Every piece as delicate,
Enticing, even to the most conscious.
Dada Olowo Eyo Apr 2014
'Tis my undying, ageless love,
As mysterious as the deep,
Forever, to hold, and to keep,
Ready, always, for any life's curve.
Dada Olowo Eyo Apr 2018
Blood chilling howls of the children of state float into nothingness,
Merchants of destruction revel in the trade of wanton killings,
Powers and principalities celebrate a marriage of economic convenience,
Deaf, blind and mute to the daily anguish of the people of state.
Four years after the abduction of over 200  #ChibokGirls Nigerians are non the wiser...sad.

If goodly people were,
To turn to evil work,
Then nothing ought to stand,
In the way of evil lending to good.
Dada Olowo Eyo Feb 2019
Moral uprightness,
In the face,
Of growing hunger,
And hopelessness?

Patriotism,
In the face,
Of joblessness,
And disillusionment?

While despots,
In the face,
Of impoverished people,
Sit on their common wealth?
It is well nigh impossible to feel anything close to love for that country Nigeria when the entity doesn't, didn't and will never care for a second. A system rigged to cater for those the colonial masters brainwashed into doing their bidding since 1914 and legalised a charade since 1960. A dysfunctional system that creates bad people can never be populated by good people.

I will cry upon thine shoulder,
Oh, gentle lover,
I entrust with you my fragility,
Promise, ne'er, to take advantage, of my vulnerability.

Suddenly blenders have become kit and kin,
But we forget our elders made do without,
Modern men and women too fat to lift a finger,
Take shortcuts in blended greens, reds and yellows.
Nigerians have suddenly discovered that they can blend all sorts of fruits in an attempt to keep weight down but they forget the real reason is leading a couch potato life - our forebears lived longer because they moved about more

Soaked pillow, piles of unwashed dishes,
***** takeaways, chopsticks,
Sunshine hardly kissed this room,
Since his heart was broken in two.

Before the jack came down,
And the green went up,
Life was just bearable around town,
Today, however, the hardship won't stop.

So, how big is your fear?
Large enough to scare you to death?
But all will eventually be crystal clear,
When the jury carried out its final threat.

Life's double standards,
The weak achieve greatness,
And I get served innards,
Working the city's rotten vastness.

The jump,
Nobody saw it happen,
They turned, all of a sudden,
Bodies falling with a great sad thump!
Finally, WHO declares the novel Wuhan coronavirus a global threat to world health as confirmed cases recorded in the United Kingdom.

Even the uninformed could have seen this trajectory and calculated that it would take less than a month for the virulent strain to reach every continent in earth.

Are we witnessing the first human population culling since the bubonic plague?

I refuse to be painted,
Or even slightly tainted,
By the same brush with which,
Our evil politicians become criminally rich.

Things are not how they were,
Plenty baffle the mind,
Madness of the dry kind,
Pushing women and men to savage dare.

Awake, staring into nothingness,
I listen to the terrifying darkness,
With huge eyes, wide open,
Begging...sleep, please, happen.

And where was your love,
When the entire world turned?
But you claimed ours was eternal,
Yet left me to be burned?

Leathery vermins,
All over the place,
Smelly rotens,
Invading my bachelor space.

Soaked in crimson,
I lay lifeless, shattered and cold,
I kissed my wife this morning,
But at sundown she is mourning.

Of my happiness,
Absolutely nothing,
Utter senselessness,
To even think you're something.

Everything is moving in every direction,
And nothing ever remains in position,
As the clock ticks off with mercurial accuracy,
There is no time for a second look at intimacy.

Carroty hair,
Ginger beard,
Hour glass figure,
Snow White teeth;

Wait...what?
There are no children starving?
Adults living in cartons?
Nations rising against nations?
Dada Olowo Eyo Aug 2019
The world tries to tear us asunder,
They say we can't love each other,
Our kind don't belong together,
We're brother and sister.
Dada Olowo Eyo Sep 2018
Yes, giving up everything?
No, giving up nothing?
Held back by threads of uncertainty,
But propelled by raging dislike for mediocrity.
Dada Olowo Eyo Apr 2015
Emotions bubbled from deep within,
Several rings had gone unanswered,
Last night we had an encounter,
And tempers flared with oblique profundity;

Is this what I think,
All we had going,
In one grey night,
Lost, and never to be had?
Dada Olowo Eyo Aug 2019
This forbidden love of ours,
Wrought in defiant rebellion,
Tongues and creed in ****** opposition,
But by cupid we build impregnable towers.
Dada Olowo Eyo Feb 2013
Don't say you don't love someone any more,
When you refuse to let them out the door,
Never give up when you feel you can't continue any more,
What to do is pick yourself off of the sodden floor.
Veracruz...you know who you are :)

Growing up was lonesome,
Didn't believe I was awesome,
In fear of everything,
Self esteem was nothing.
Different times, now.
