When Goodbye We All Must Say

Today I saw my mother
She seems so tired these days
She knows that she is very sick
Still she says it's all okay

She tells us to not worry
There is a time we all must go
She talks about the plans she's made
And the things that we should know

She says that when her fight is done
And she has given all she can
She knows she'll then be ready
To meet her journeys end

We tell her to keep fighting
Dont give up on her life
Inside we know her journey
Must have an end in sight

I dont know really what to do
For this woman I so love
She has raised five children on her own
And not once did she give up

We tell her that we love her
And pretend that we dont see
This disease that has taken her
And dropped her to her knees

I love my mother very much
And want to take from her this pain
I dread that day I know will come
When goodbye we all must say

I have no idea how much longer we will have as she has been on Dialysis for so long and has gotten so much worse. No longer able to walk or catch her breath, I hope she still has many years but I realize that she is getting worse each month. Still I know that only God has a plan for when any of us go. So if I have lapse in writing it is because I want to spend as much time with her as I can.

The waiting time

There's a waiting time of each day for me
Not like I've know before
It's a time of day  when I lay and wait
For my heart to find love once more

Its a time of day when I make believe
That you are still here with me
You made my world lovely and bright
It was the way I dreamed it would be

I want to feel the touch of your hand once more
For in that moment I find
A remembered warmth that we once shared
A closeness of spirits and minds

I see your smile and I hear your voice
Its as plain as if you are here
It makes all of the sorrow and grief I have
Somehow suddenly  disappear

So please, please let me go on pretending
For that is the only way I can bare
For without you the silence surrounds me
And turns my waiting time to tears.

Divorce stage two, when that person you loved has left but someplace in your heart you think they will soon come home, come back to you. You hope that this is all a dream so you pretend they are still there.

Would you mind if I took a break
From writing my short rhymes
Will you say you'll miss my words
That my poems touched your lives

Will I even be remembered
For one poem that was read
Have I touched someone deep inside
With something that was said

If I took a break for just awhile
And enjoyed a week or two
Would you say you understand
Go do what's best for you

A spring break could be just the thing
That I need to clear my mind
I must take a break and get away
To rejuvenate my life

Be back in a few weeks I promise,  just got a crap load of stuff to do.

Just a short break for work stuff. A full time job plus now I have 3 houses to rehab  and get ready.  I'm not sure exactly how long but I promise I will be back.  Hell maybe the pull to write will call me back sooner then I think.

A Bottle Full Of Whiskey

He used a bottle full of whiskey
To dull the memories of his past
Knowing that the pain he felt
Would not fit into a glass

As he set there on his barstool
In his eyes I saw regret
He talked about the life he lived
How he wished he had it back

Would drink straight from the bottle
Just to make the numbness last
The story of his lonely life
He would tell to all who ask

He talked about lifes lessons
The mistakes that he had made
Said he lived with regrets
For things he cannot change

Thought the view from the bottle
Would help to make his life more clear
But the bottle got the best of him
And wasted all his years

He used a bottle full of whiskey
To dull the memories of his past
Knowing that the pain he felt
Would not fit into a glass

What a specjal day I remember . I remember that small cry from a new born baby at exactly 10:10pm. I remember watching over him when he was one day old as his mother went back into the hospital for ten days to have surgery. I remember how unsure I was that week and scared to death. I remember his gentle smiles when I walked into the room and his eyes when he saw something new. I remember our walks in the park along the trails to see the deer and his excitement to get a .99 cent disney video from the Blockbuster. Back then thats all I could afford. I remember the game rooms and movie theaters and the holding hands and little kisses and hugs. I still remember every word of our special prayer and the father and son song I made up and yes made him sing..lol.   Watching as he ran with his friends down the street and seeing him look back to make sure I was still there and that smile, oh that smile.  I remember rockets in the park, the boat rides,  sitting him on the gas tank of my motorcycle and giving him a ride around the parking lot time and time again. I remember him sitting on his great grandfathers lap and giggling and hoping I would get the chance to see my great grandchild. I remember every Tuesday and Thursdays phone calls at 7 pm just to hear his voice after he was moved to Florida.   Sometimes I would get him on the phone and sometimes I would leave a message but those calls meant the world to me and allowed my week to be just a little better. I remember all of our long and short talks for advice and how he actually listened. Teaching him to drive a stick shift and how he picked it up so fast.  His first girlfriend when she came over and said hi and after she left I said who was that, he said I dont know but im going to find out, and I just laughed. I remember every year taking vacations to Florida just to see him and then four times a year his trips to Ohio to see me. I remember all the tears from both him and me as he boarded a plain to fly back to Florida. I remember the extended family and how much everyone helped out when he was so young. Dont know how I could have survived without that help back then.  Christmas parties, and gatherings and how as a young man he helped me propose to my now ex wife.  His graduation from high school, his friends and  all the places he has worked. I remember how happy I was he decided to live in Ohio and go to Ohio State and how I was more excited on his first day of college then he was.  I remember how sweet he was when he knew my heart was broken and how the son tried to comfort his father when I got a divorce. There are so many thing that I cant even begin to list but most of all I remember and still feel the unconditional love he has for me and I for him. Today is my sons birthday and although he is now a man we spend time together almost every day. He is always my son first but has also grown into a friend and a great young man. I Love you son, always and forever.   Dad

Why I'm Single

You know men are just plain better
At most things that we do
You may say wait one minute
But inside you know it's true

A man can change a tire
We can even build a house
We know when it's time to talk
And when to shut our mouth

Some woman think we're crazy
So I've been told a time or two
If only they would listen
When we tell them what to do

Well as a man myself I'll tell you
Exactly what you need
I know that you will understand
For your job is just to please

Now it could be that a woman's job
Is much harder then I think
For after all I'm not dead yet
And that still amazes me

I've heard woman say they can't believe
I've been single for so long
Then they shake their head and walk away
I think there's something I'm doing wrong

What could it be,..lol

**Carl Joseph Roberts
...Now before I get any hate mail, this is just a joke on being a chauvinistic pig. This is not at all how I feel.  I have three older sisters and I 100% know that woman can do most things better then men. I admire and respect all woman.

Dream ***(LOL)

Have you ever really noticed
How dream *** feels so good
Makes you feel so special
Lets you wish you could

You try to fall back to sleep
And hope it starts again
Or lay there and just reminisce
With something in your hand

Dream *** can be special
It can help you through your day
You can dream about those you know
Or those who have no names

Still dream *** can be harmful
If you let a name scream out
Especially if you're married
And that name is not your spouse

Dream *** was my downfall
With my wife last night and me
It turns out I had dream ***
With an ex girlfriend who she'd seen

This dream *** has a funny part
For it wasn't my own dream
My wife just started yelling
And hit me in my sleep

My wife was having dream ***
And it involved my ex and me
I remember cause it hurt so good
When she woke me from my sleep

I asked if dream *** counted
If it was *** just in her dream
She stared at me with those eyes
And I knew I wouldn't sleep

So I took my wife in my arms
To make love so she could see
That it was only dream ***
And she was the one for me

Now what I didnt tell my wife
Was of the dream she made me see
For I now wanted dream ***
With the girl out of her dream

I closed my eyes and started
Then hollored the wrong name
Quickly I then figured out
Dream *** always ends the same

My wife started hitting me
For having dream *** once again
So like most dream *** that happens
I got no happy end

And im not married, go figure...lol

On a busy downtown corner
As the traffic passes by
Stands a man with a cardboard sign
Can't seem to look me in the eye

But he's going to live, forever, somewhere
So help me God
I've got to show him
How much you care

At a big bank on wall street
With its fancy marble floors
Walks in a man in a business suit
As his chauffeur holds the door

But he's going to live, forever, somewhere
So help me God
I've got to show him
How much you care

Every face that I pass by
I see you on the cross
Bearing all our guilt and sin
Not one of us should be lost

I'm going to take this message
Of love that I've found
And somehow share it with this world
So help me God

In a courtroom with its wooden chairs
Sits a little boy and girl
Their mom and dad are fighting
Their little eyes so scared

But their going to live, forever, somewhere
So help me God
I've got to show them
How much you care

On the third floor up in ICU
With a bandage on his head
He may not make it till tomorrow
Was the last thing the doctor said

But he's going to live, forever, somewhere
So help me God
I've Got to show him
How much you care

Every face that I pass by
I  see you on the cross
Baring all my guilt and sin
Not one of us should be lost

I'm going to take this message
Of love that I've found
And somehow share it with this world
So help me God
I would love to take full credit for this poem but my contribution is small and I added only one of the 4 stanzas. Two great lifelong friends of mine named Bob Browning and Ed Dixon we're the main writers.  Eddie passed of brain cancer four years ago and Bobby and I miss him very much. The reference to the ICU is a reference about Eddie. This poem is listed in his honor.

Sometimes the things that they do
Come from deep within their souls
Others may not understand
The passions that they hold

They will give their time to others
If they know there is a need
Volunteer to help someone
Get them back up on their feet

They do not ask for money
Want no payment in advance
Expect nothing to be given
When they lend a helping hand

The moment that we understand
They do this free of charge
Is when our lives begin to change
And it fills our inner heart

Sometimes the things that they do
Comes from deep within their souls
Others may not understand
The passions that they hold

He tapped me on the shoulder
Before he had to go
Said I'll be your Guardian Angel
I just wanted you to know

He said he knows no one who went
That came back and then complained
So he guessed the place was pretty nice
And was sure he'd want to stay

He knew he'd see my grandma
Who had went three years before
She'd been waiting for him patiently
To walk him through God's door

Then he asked us not to worry
Said he knows what is in store
He was pleased with the life he lived
And knew God would show him more

Spent his last three weeks with family
Where he said his sweet goodbyes
My final memory of this man
Was the brave ending to his life

He would give to me this passion
But to the world he gave much more
The life he lived was one of love
He was the gift I most adored

My Grandfather

A true story written with tears.  I miss this man who fought in two wars, was a prisoner in World War 2 then came home and served as a Sergeant with the Columbus Police Dept.  My Grandfather gave to me my Love for poetry. He passed several years ago but is missed every day.

Roses represent what we call love
They are great gifts from God above
Petals that blossom throughout the day
They touch our hearts in many ways

A scent so special it is their own
For love and friendship they are grown
Awake each morning as a new day comes
Show their beauty and reach for the sun

Many colors of Roses that we can see
Each one special, each one unique
Grow new each year to give away
To place a smile on someone's face

Roses represent what we call love
They are great gifts from God above
Petals that blossom throughout the day
They touch our hearts in many ways

I give to you a rose today

*Carl Joseph Roberts
A friend asked that I write a poem about roses and this is what I came up with. Always hard writing for someone else because instead of using your feelings on a subject you are trying to figure out how you think they feel.

A Picture Perfect Time Of Year

The warmth of spring as winter fades
Brings excitement to the air
As lovers walk hand in hand
A picture perfect time of year

We watch as flowers blossom
See new colors on the trees
We hear the birds now singing
And it brings an inner peace

Cold and snow just a memory
Of the season that has passed
Looking forward to the days to come
Taking time to love and laugh

The true beauty of this season
Is the new love we feel within
Each day a fresh reminder
Of a time when life begins

The warmth of spring as winter fades
Brings excitement to the air
As lovers walk hand in hand
A picture perfect time of year

See The Future

The past can call you back in time
Just when you least expect
It tries to tell you what to feel
And how you should react

Dont give the past the time of day
Or let it rule your life
Dont let the past consume you
Or prevent you from whats right

Each morning when you wake up
Know that its a brand new day
You must leave the past behind you
And start your own new way

It's hard to see the future
If you're living in the past
The past has memories that are gone
The future, ones that last

See the future
..
