The Bottom Of A Glass

His face told the story
Of a man who'd seen his share
Of broken hearts and promises
And it seemed that no one cared

He finished off his whiskey
Then stared down through his glass
He said somehow I got lost in this
And watched my life go past

He said life had been his teacher
He had learned from his mistakes
It had been a long hard lesson
That he learned all to late

Said you only have one life
And it goes by to fast
Don't waste your life looking at the world
Through the bottom of a glass

He said he couldn't see it then
But now it was so clear
That the bottle got the best of him
And it wasted all his years

He knew time had closed the door
And he could not change the past
Those answers he was looking for
Weren't in the bottom of the glass

Life had been his teacher
He had learned from his mistakes
It had been a long hard lesson
That he learned all to late

He said you only have one life
And it goes by to fast
Don't waste your life looking at the world
Through the bottom of a glass

Robert Gene Browning
Carl Joseph Roberts
The first original idea and draft of this poem was made several years ago by my friend Robert Gene Browning. Bobby and I grew up together since we were 11 years old and I consider him my closest friend. Bobby himself is a fantastic writer and like me dabbles in poetry and song. So with that I must give credit to him as this poem is about his personal feelings.  Because it is personal in nature he gets final say on the wording as to reflect what it means inside for him. We have changed single words, lines and entire verses over the last several years. We have also put this poem to song and have tried several different ways to sing it.  We have had many discussions on the many different aspects of this poem and changed the wording often. This is my latest modified version and I hope you enjoy.
Have you ever read someones poetry
That where you stand your brought to tears
You can feel the heart of suffering
They've endured throughout the years

Where they view themselves in writings
As a soul that's lost and weak
Not knowing to write the way they do
Is a sign of inner strength

Or how many of us they have helped
Seeing our own weakness through their eyes
And the struggles that we all go through
That fill these poets lives

I'm here in rhyme to let them know
Just what their writings do
And how many in our troubled times
They have helped us through
The Truth

Why is the truth so hard to hear
When we say it's what we want
Just knowing that once it's heard
It can never be undone

We say it matters most of all
It's what we look for most
Find a reason to not believe
Think it's not worth the cost

We seek the truth from others
Demand that it come out
Then refuse to look deep within
And hide it from ourselves

The truth can sometimes set us free
It is what life's about
We must take our time and listen
And just let the truth come out

This poem written as shooting and riots rock the St. Louis area. No matter what side you are on, let the courts decide and don't riot and destroy. Hear all the facts from both sides and remember the old saying that two wrongs don't make a right. Let the truth come out, but realize you may not always like or want to hear the truth.
Best Friend

He has the basement all to himself
While I'm at work all day
Watches T.V. and lays around
Without a worry in his head

He eats and drinks when he wants
Takes naps in the afternoons
Jumps off the couch when I walk in
Because he knows I won't approve

He is so happy when I come home
And that's when he wants to play
Jumps for joy and kisses me
And won't let me walk away

He follows me like he's a child
Thinks I'm the best thing in the world
Will listen to every word I say
Then pretend it's never heard

This is my dog and he does not judge
And his love is not pretend
He is a true companion
And he's known as man's best friend

Things Within
(A poem on Depression)

Things within are hard to see
But we feel them deep inside
When others ask how we are
We smile and tell them lies

Things within our inner thoughts
That seem to never go away
Emotions that cannot be stopped
We hear them each and every day

Things within that no one knows
And we hope they never do
Many different parts of life
We hide from daily view

Things within we must let go
Like the demons from our past
We try to push them far away
And hope they don't come back

Things within they can be changed
If we share them with a few
Know many others have things within
It is not just only you

We all have things within

This poem written in response to the Dread Poet Roberts who is having a poetry contest to bring awareness to the issue of depression. Although the Dread Poet Roberts has my last name, He/She is no relation to me at all. The poem is meant to bring light to depression and how some feel it deep inside every day and must attempt to hide it. The every day struggle to overcome.  No matter what, never think you are alone.
Transparent
(How to be a Politician)

Transparent, they say they'll be
Then hide so much from you and me
Make a promise that can't be met
Blame someone else and hope you forget

Give and take as they see fit
No need to worry of elections yet
Take your money and tell a lie
Hope your memory fades with time

Judge someone else for what they do
Then go and do the same thing to
Knowing they would not find fault
If what they did got the same result

It's not about give and take
Will stand their ground for parties sake
Don't worry for what may be right
For the good of all they will not fight

Transparent,  they say they'll be
Then hide so much from you and me
Make a promise that can't be met
Blame someone else and hope you forget

Transparent
