Turn Off The Movie
Zane Safrit Jul 2018
Can someone
Turn the movie off
Memories
They just keep playing

Reruns and repeats
Regrets but
Never the laughter
Never them

Turn the movie off
Tonight and
Let me alone so
I can rest.

Dime-Store Cashier
Zane Safrit Jul 2018
I was a dime-store
Cashier’n in a bad side of town
Just waitin’ for her
To walk in and take it all.

She waved a big smile
Instead of a forty-five
I said yes ma’am and quickly
Handed her my heart

She offered her hand
I couldn’t really say no
We walked out, grinning
Into the night, into life

Cheek to Cheek
Zane Safrit Jul 2018
Hang me out to dry
Done this once or twice
Still you make me sigh
Everything's nice

We met at a gallery,
A bar, who knows
All this goes to show
I'm hanging, I'm waiting

You tell me not to call
Then you're sitting at my bar
Open seat next to you
Favorite drink already poured

Hey baby, you say
Come here often?
We laugh, cheek to cheek
Our glasses clink

Rage against ...
Zane Safrit Aug 2017
We roll by
Giving all
We got to
Get by and

We might be
Driving a
Taurus or
Fiesta
Maybe a
Pickup truck
Or shiny
Kia thing

We will rage
Sometimes by
Our dying
Kitchen light
Not too loud
Can't lose our
Jobs because
Our babies
Need healthcare

Hat tip to Dylan Thomas for his "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night."

This started from my perspective, 'He.' But then I remembered that economics and everything it's possibly more accurate to say "She" ... So I wrote it with She/Her. Then I realized ... it's us and we. We're all in this together.

Senesence and not
pubescence is where
We’ll end up someday
raddled and addled

Our Secrets tattled
by strangers who know
Nothing, and yet speak
as experts on us

Our crypts will be files
the size of a gig,
Sold  on a thumbdrive
for the highest price

Starbursts Trailing
Zane Safrit Jul 2018
Watched you walk
Down the aisle last night
Shiny, bright and white
Starbursts trailing

Turned away, no one saw
Wiped on a smile
Clapped and laughed
At the right times

Faded out the door
Before the last 'I do'
No one saw me
No one needed to

A Line in Air
Zane Safrit Nov 2018
None of them remember,
None of them care,
To them I’m just
A thin line of air.

A line faded
Was it ever there
Can’t remember
Don't really care

How did we know him
Did we know him
I guess not
He left no impression

A line in air
Is never remembered
Nobody noticed
Nobody cared.

Dream On
Zane Safrit Jun 2017
Dream on, he sang
Dream on, Dream on
Just keep dreaming
Always liked the song

Some days it’s like
stirring around
old, cold ashes
the fire gone now

If You Were Me
Zane Safrit Jan 2019
If you were me
Would you care
Would you smile
All the while

If I were you
Could I laugh
Could I forgive
Say it’s okay

Let’s begin again
You and I and
I as you and
You as I and

See the world as you
See it as me
If you were me
And I were you

If I was god
Would the children die
Would their mothers cry
And their fathers rage
If god was me
Would he forgive you
Draw you to his/my chest
Hold you and breathe

But I am God
And so you are
We’re created in his/her image.

So let’s laugh together
I can forgive
and hold you and
inhale your essence

The children then
can stop dying
their mothers crying
their fathers raging

We can all laugh
and hug each other
and breathe in all
that we are and

All that we could be
Because I am
you and you are
me. God created
us, we see.

Emotionally, intuitively, yes. But, right now, there's so much attention on what divides us. Unfortunate, but this too shall pass. Right?

Tell Her
Zane Safrit Jun 2017
Someone took my laptop
And my smartphone too
What kinda world when
they do that to you

No one needs to steal her
she just walked away
Someone else buying her
pretty things today

Now I am happy too
here writing all day
but please would you
tell her, tell her, okay?

Things Are Changing
Zane Safrit Apr 2019
Things are changing
Can you hang on
Things are changing
Bang a gong

Write it on my headstone
Things were changing
And he held on
Bang a gong

Ain’t the first
Won’t be the last
Things are changing
They can kiss my ***

Write it on my headstone
Write it in the sky
Things are changing
I’m holding on

The poem came from a conversation I had this week with a dear friend of mine. She'd texted me that line: 'things are changing.' As I wrote it, this tune from Otis Redding whispered to me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyhL0ioST_U

Glittering Arrays
Zane Safrit Apr 2019
Would I, could I, should I
Seems like I should
But then again, maybe I shouldn’t
Time and tide, here I sit

If she looks good, what’m I missing
And if she don’t, maybe maybe what
A squint, a stare, a sideways glance
But first a search on Google or LinkedIn

To call or not, to speak or not
No, now it’s to swipe, left or right is how
So we flicker past each other
Glittering arrays of possibilities

I'm a little 'long in the tooth' and bald in the head for the dating scene. This poem started with the first line, then the first stanza and then I laughed and cranked out the rest. That's usually how I write these poems here. A word, a line, a riff... see how far I can run with it, have fun with it. Then let it go and see where it runs with me, has fun with me.

True North
Zane Safrit Mar 2018
Your poems are always sad,
she said
They always start out happy
I said
And then what happens
she asked
The past catches up
I said

But I am your true north
she said
Yes, you are. Keep shining

Where'd You Go?
Zane Safrit Apr 2020
You said that you loved me
Then where did you  go?
I'm sitting here wondering
Just how would I know.

We loved and we laughed
And we both wanted more
I finished my shower.
While you walked out the door

I paid all your bills
And climbed all your hills
So baby won't you tell me
What I did so **** wrong

Maybe that's the real problem
But it wasn't for me.
Maybe all you really wanted
Was just to be free.

The rhythm of this song came from John Prine's "Paradise." Stay safe, stay strong, keep living with fire and passion... in closed quarters for now.

Who Knows?
Zane Safrit Jan 2019
It must be nice
to have and to hold
And be so bold
to dream us twice

It must be nice
to see us tomorrow
As we see us today
maybe better, who knows

It must be nice
us tomorrow
Like us today
who knows they say.

When I Die
Zane Safrit Apr 2018
When I die
Well they may not even notice
I don't think they know my number now.
If they don't just let 'em alone
I'm happy
Happier than I've ever been

Iowa was my home for so long
Couldn't find a better place to live
But all good things must end sometime
any how
I'm on my way to heaven, who knows
if it's there.

Hat tip to Tanya Tucker and her 1978 version of "Texas When I Die" written by Ed Bruce, Patsy Bruce, Bobby Borchers. There's a sad defiance to its claim of journeys and setbacks and coming home. I woke up singing that song this morning. Here's Tanya: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqOPWieA9Tc

Time to Go
Zane Safrit Apr 2018
You know it's time to go
when your world is one big
Nancy Reagan and it
just says no. No. No. No

No to love
No to jobs
No to Hi's
No to byes

You walk in a
parallel universe
watching, waving
as they and theirs go by
