Fear
Suresh Gupta Aug 2018
Fear

It's a crime against its host,
And grips it for eternity
None can escape it
How could we, for its taught
At the right age of infancy

The night is its companion
Residing in shadows,
The dark of the day
The dark of the mind
It lives in the darkness of the day
But more so, it lives in the mind
Some would argue its introduction
As a defensive measure
But it eats away at the soul

None of us are immune from it
Nor can we escape it totally
We can try to chip away at it
But can never eradicate it fully
An affliction so potent, its always there
There at the base of our skull

Without differentiation, it inflicts us all,
From the right age of being born
Introduced at infancy, as a protective measure
Once there, it lingers on
The most vicious virus that cannot be eradicated
Not medical or inherited, it's totally manufactured
But once turned on, can never be switched off
It comes in worst shapes, sizes and color
An emotion so strong, I afraid to say
Fear.

Diwali - Festival of Lights

May all the lamps in your house shine bright
And the darkness be always kept at bay
May all your progeny stay healthy and flourish
Just as the lamp by the oil is nourished

Winter of Life
Suresh Gupta Aug 2018
Winter of life

In the warmth of the afternoon Sun
And the chill in the air
I look at the green
And wonder about those not here

The menagerie of movement
That I saw in the spring, summer and fall
Is not vibrant no more
For the lack of outstanding invitations or call

In the season of winter
There is a little sadness after all
Most everybody is regenerating
For spring, summer and fall

There is no reason for dismay, my friends
For like cycles in seasons, are cycles in life
While some moments are trying,
Most are full of promise and smiles.

It is easier to bear, the winter of life
Knowing no matter how hollow
The blooms of happiness
Will soon follow

So learn from the nature
Take it, a moment at a time
Don't be disheartened
Know that soon you shall shine.

Valentine

Valentine
02/14/2016

A day to celebrate Love
An emotion that starts with oneself
And then radiates outwards
To all those that we love

Oneself, concentrically existing
Extending our Love
Radiating like ripples
Circles growing bigger and bigger

When we can embrace one closest to us
Meaning us
And then the one next to us
We bring harmony to our own environment

While we cannot reach everybody
But with a smile and love in our heart
Maybe we can change a few
And bring harmony to them

So, on this day that celebrates Love
I wish you a Very Happy Valentine's Day
May Love permeates all that you are
And all that surrounds you.

Birth

Birth is a curse and a cross that we all bear
Whether His tool or a fool, the Almighty must hear
Of our choice we did not start this journey
But our actions, seem to prolong this churning

Emotions - Hatred and Love

Hatred has no limits
Love has no boundaries
One demands revenge
The other pays the price

Neither is wrong
For nothing is right
Both have their followers
All living in fright

One looks for motives
Other forgoes logic
Reactions cannot be contained
Emotions cannot be controlled

Freedom

Every breath
Every step
Every thought
Every word

To live
To be
To act
To feel

There is not much to say
Perpetually fighting to stay
There is so much in its way
To be free is all we pray

Hostage
Suresh Gupta Aug 2018
Hostage
Unable to free myself
Nobody to turn to
For the demon is within me
External forces, internal forces
Counter, opposing
Tormenting
Screams within
Let me go, let me go
Till I realize
What’s holding me hostage
is me

A Moment in Time - III
It’s a new day
The call to feast has gone out
The table is laid
Scented with perfumery
Vibrant in color
Multitudes at play
All seeking to benefit
Some come flying in
Others crawling, all partaking
The progeny at stake
In the wind
Streaks of light
Nothing is visible
Yet it shines again and again
Reflecting the Sun
There is another host
Waiting to ensnare
Some guests for itself
And then you realize
Everybody is a host
And a guest as well
Waiting to be fed
Or feed itself
Nature is truly all awe inspiring

Loss of the Very Young I
The Sandy Hook Shooting

Lord, maybe you needed them more
As I gaze at the sunset by the shore
The forced solace I can find
To stop the torment of my mind
Is maybe you needed them more

I am still trying to fathom why
How could you possibly justify
The innocent that had yet to flourish
Their minds still raw, ready to nourish
Maybe you needed them more.

The House, My Home
Suresh Gupta Aug 2018
The House, My Home

It’s not the brick and mortar
Nor the painted walls
Not the many rooms
Decorations and all
It started with just the two of us
But that was not for long
The pitter patter of the little feet
Is what kept us strong
The giggles and the laughter
Just some of what we shared
The trials and tribulations
Proved that we cared
It’s the memories of many decades
That makes - the house, a Home.

Trying Times
Suresh Gupta Aug 2018
Trying Times

Why cry
Tear ducts are dry
Silently weeping
Efforts wasted
All around
Every step
Evil doesn’t stop
Just want to move on
Pay the dues
Walk away
Too ignorant
Battles external, internal
Problems all around
Commitments
Obligations
Any effort
All efforts
Fruitless
We go through the motions
Without knowing the purpose
Most of us shouldn’t be
Most of us shouldn’t have been
What good is intelligence?
If the acts don’t match up
We live, we breathe
But for what purpose
Take a moment, stop
Search and seek
In the hour of hopelessness
We look to the heavens
Reaching out, with our eyes
Hoping to reach, to touch
Someone, beyond our understanding
As if by a miracle
Our pains will dissolve
Oh so lost, with the eyes welling up
Looking in desperation
For a reason and resolve.

A Moment in Time - IV
It knows about the open invitation
That the fauna has sent out
Full of vibrant color
Aroma and young sprouts
It piggy backs on the venue
Laying its own decorations
And then waits
For the slightest of sensations
The plans are made
The web is laid
As it contemplates
Upon its’ workmanship
And now its rests
Depleted of energy
Awaiting patiently
For the guests
That will bring the tasty treats
As the exhaustion fades
The hunger gets stronger
But, like an elegant host
It’s not much longer
For a feast and a toast

Spawned

From the devil, I am spawned
My realm extends from dusk to dawn
Some **** blood, others use fangs
Many find their end, as they hang
What's elixir to me is poison to all
No one can escape the reapers call
Why fight the fight you're doomed to fail
Let go of your beliefs, join me as we sail
In everybody's side, I am the thorn
I am symbolized by the horn

Beholden
Suresh Gupta Aug 2018
Beholden

In the sea of darkness
Nothing being visible
The senses cannot perceive
What remains invisible

We know not from whence we came,
We know not where we'd go
One thing is for sure
What journey we're on, we do not know

The seed that borne us
Is not from yesterday
The seed that borne us
Was planted a long long away

We are beholden to those
That we can sense and feel
But they are not the one's
That are here or real

It is stated that we are a product
Of creators imagination
To understand the reasoning
What could have been IT's inspiration

Radicalism

Radicalism
01/31/2016

To defy the establishment
And freedom to express
To shake the firmament
Is the reason I confess

No thought or idea
Is born of a committee
Against all odds
It's to voice ones individuality

There's no question that
At the root of all knowledge
There stood a lonely thought
Not born of school or college

The masses that flock
As the believers of the word
So freely they mock
Differing views when heard

They call one on the outside
An heretic and a radical
That is only true, if the
Intent is forced ecumenical

No thought is too wild
No idea too abhorrent
Once it gains acceptance
It all becomes coherent

Masses may find no relief
Radicalizing ones individuality
Not realizing that their beliefs
Were born of same mentality

Fanaticism

Ignorance it's motto
Illiteracy it's weapon
Narrow mindedness it's field
And also it's shield

It gathers the ignorant
In the shroud of illiteracy
Robs them of their freedom
And steals their individuality

It makes some prisoners for life
Some prisoners by birth
Deprived of any reasonings
Robbed of any worth

Having no boundaries
It exists in all of us
Whether born or bread
It destroys all that is precious

In the past it had its emissaries
Without shame or need of guises
In the form of kings and priests
But now hides in many disguises

Liberals want it tamed
But that only sends it underground
Emotions cannot be framed
And voices cannot be drowned

The way to defeat this nemeses
And change ones mentality
Is through knowledge and education
With freedom and individuality

A Moment in Time
Suresh Gupta Jul 2018
A Moment in Time
Shedding the constraints of indoors
Drawn by the beauty of nature
At first, mesmerized by the flowers in bloom
Soon the mind wandered
The leaves and then the whole plant
Early summer, evening breeze
Everything came into focus
The floor covered with those that had lived their life
And now shall become the fodder
The branches flourishing,
Exuding the intoxicating aroma
Adding color to the background of green
But then the sight awakens
Amongst what drew me first
Was a menagerie of movement
Hosted by the flowers
A gathering of creatures
Small and smaller, winged and otherwise
Just watching, oblivious
Honeybees, ants, flies and lady birds
Enjoying the nectar of their host
Honeybees, bright yellow
Feet covered in pollen
Hovering, as paying homage to its host
Ants and flies tending to their own
And then, the lady birds, in beautiful
Bright red coats with black poker dots
Life, seldom noticed,
Plants enticing its guests with nectar and aroma
Multitudes feasting
Symbiosis, at its utmost
Hours past, light fading
Gust of wind, a mild chill
As if tapping me on the shoulder
The creatures are gone
The party is over
Alas, it’s time to leave.
The beauty of nature
Back to the darkness
Of our own creation

A Moment in Time – II

Oh! So many times, I have longed
For a close encounter, with
The one that mesmerizes me
Rapidly fluttering its wings
To stay in place
What power, what strength
And then it happened
Still in my meditative state
Motionless, my eyes opened
To absorb the nature around
Less than an arm’s length away
Hovering, looking straight at me
A humming bird
That dainty creature.
Studying me, analyzing me
Me, myself in disbelief
Frozen in place, did not want to alarm her
Moments passed, don’t know how many
I was captivated
Soon she sought a perch of a restful twig
Come back, my mind spoke softly
As my eyes followed its path
If that’s all the pleasure I can have
Then, thank you
But before long, she came back
As if she read my thoughts
Same place, and then she chirped
I so wanted to understand her
Tell her to come, rest on me
Not to tire herself too quickly
Let me soak up your beauty, your strength
What did she say?
Was she admiring me as well?
And then she flew back to the restful twigs of the tree again
I was still in awe, still following her every path,
And then it happened, it could not be
I was still mesmerized
By the lucky start to my day
She was back again, chirping and chirping away
Continuing in my meditative state
My mind thanked her profusely
This time as she flew a little further away
My hands clasped in gratitude
As I whispered thank you
A good omen
I contemplated
Wishes do come true.

Tethered
Suresh Gupta Jul 2018
Tethered
Surrounded by the wonders of nature
Beauty permeating all the senses
Yet tormented by existence
Unable to fathom why
Bible points to Heaven
The thoughts are confused
The heart is heavy
The drag of ignorance
Plagues the power of understanding
Demons harboring inside
Demand reasoning
Screaming
Acceptance without understanding
Holds ignorant tethered
The reasons elude me
Meditate
Must find peace within
Opposing forces, moral dilemmas
Tether shall fray
As ignorance fades

Seasons

Seasons

Seasons in life
Seasons in health
Seasons in nature
Seasons in wealth

Birth in spring
Growth in summer
Maturity in fall
Regeneration in winter

Birth, spring
Like a bud, a youngling
Full of aroma and delight
Journey of the first step
Full of hope and wonder

Growth of summer
Journey of the next step
Retaining nourishment and knowledge
Growing stronger and wise
Resisting the mightiest of challenges
Feeling invincible

Maturity of autumn
Time for the harvest
The fruits of knowledge
Of all that is attained
To share the wisdom, of
Birth and growth
To the many generations in tow
To feel proud of living

Regeneration in winter
And now the time has come
To feel humble
To have had the moment
To have lived
The journey to the end
And so, neither out of fear
Nor regret, nor tear
You take your last step
So as to rest and regenerate anew
For cycle shall start again

— The End —
