Safe in the glow
Stephan Jun 2016

Bright as the midsummer stars on the sky
Your love illumines my way
Soft as a candle flame flickers the eye
Enchantment so warm on display

Moonbeams now glisten the path to your heart
Shimmering sweet on the air
Even these moments which find us apart
Sparkling gleams we will share

When in the darkness I find I’m alone
Searching for merely a trace
I see a beacon to come bring me home
Lit by the smile on your face

Take me and lead me, I walk in your light
Sent down to me from above
Held in your arms where I know all is right
Safe in the glow of your love

Doomed Horizons
Stephan Jun 2016
.

Twisted vines of thorny fingers
Wrap the entrance to this place
Ripping flesh and bandaged whispers
Outlines dark of sadness trace

Carving names in weathered forecasts
Those who fall before it’s due
Leaning off to glimpse the future
Never once a grumbled clue

Placing frowns of lost persuasion
Drawing lines in charcoal sands
Daring one then yet another
Shouting out in loud demands

Gather here for time is wasting
At the edge where hearts now break
See the waves return to sender
Out beyond the landslide wake

Take your spot, a crowd is forming
Cloudy skies now call your name
Step up to the planned formation
Only you are now to blame

Spread your arms in bird-like fashion
Don’t forget that you can fly
As you find your destination
Following the tears you cry

You will reach the sorted bottom
Where the rocks predict your fate
Hurry now, the sun is setting
Doomed horizons will not wait

Well water dreams
Stephan Sep 2016
.

The grapes,
dangling from a leafy vine,
an off-season vintage
in well water dreams
where I come out the victor,
the gallant one
who leads her from the wine
to savor the brandy
poured slowly,
steadily
with affection

but

It is just a dream,
as I awaken
to realize
the alcoholic content
does not meet the region
along a hillside vineyard,
dripping into a café carafe
tempting fruits
that are far sweeter
than something
produced
with feeling

I was walking through
a beautiful forest
yesterday afternoon taking in
all of the wondrous colors
that nature has to offer.
Vibrant green leaves
were lush on the trees,
a bright blue summer sky
slipped through the
breeze flowing branches,
a multitude of brown tones
on the many varieties
of shrubs and plants
created a mosaic of patterns
beneath the majestic canopy above,
when I saw it, in a clearing,
drinking from a crystal clear
slow rippling brook,
it was an old deer,
a white tail I think
and then it dawned on me . . .
old deer rhymes with cold beer!
Coincidence?
I think not.
Ok, I know this is completely stupid but it was stuck in my head and I had to get it out somehow. So, here it is . . . I'm going to go have a beer.  : )

Oh, the title originally was "Poetic thirst" but I changed it hoping more people would read it.  ;)

Stand strong
Stephan Apr 2016
Each day brings with it change,
something new waiting,
maybe good, maybe not so much

Everyone views things differently,
sunny days or rain, each
hold qualities that can be either

Regardless of how you take it,
you are never wrong
no matter what someone may say

Just remember this,
you are who you are
and you are special

There will always be those
who try to knock you down
with whatever force they can

Stand strong and understand
you can't be everything
to all people

And neither can they,
no matter how much
they act like they can
Stephan Aug 2016

O’er the seas an angel wishes,
windswept dreams and blowing kisses
Breakfast tides awake the sand
to feature this enchanted land

Oceans green and aqua blues,
tinted morning shimmered hues
A wisp o’ wind doth touch her hair
of tapered breezes come to share

Upon her vessel pearly white
is born the beauty of her sight
So calm at peace and rest allure,
wonders cast from sculpted shore

Adrift to catch a sunny day,
amongst the waters she doth play
Eyes of brown and skin divine,
I long to call this angel mine

I stand the beach in searching of,
that soon my heart shall find her love
As rippled waters bide their time
of deep expanse and salted brine

To sail these waters castaway,
I fall upon my knees and pray
This angel sweet atop the sea,
shall find her way to only me

For on this day as it does smile,
alone she waits in precious style
Of shelled delight and smooth of wake
to bring within my heart to take

This song of coastal oceans main
I hear the melody again
And o’er this dream it can bestow
to sail within her wings aglow

Reaching for love
Stephan Aug 2016

Mountain top wishes in echoing fashion
Whispers in sonnets afloat on the sky
Soothing this emptiness fraught with distraction
Sifting through clouded views wandering by

Northern horizons in tangerine ribbons
Sing in a melody sweet to the ears
Heavenly callings from far away places
Wrapping my shoulders and calming my fears

Painting a landscape of pure understanding
Inside the dark fades a much softer hue
Nature reduced to its tiniest fragments
Illumined, the feelings I hold here for you

Narrow the tree line of dreams comes to offer
Shadows beneath every beckoning star
Finding a moonbeam aglow in its wisdom
Reaching for love now where ever you are

Forever in my heart
Stephan Jun 2016

I looked inside my heart
and found her in the corner,
then asked her how long she had been in there

She said it’s seemed a while,
but she was disappointed,
to understand that I was not aware

I gazed into her eyes
and thought she looked familiar,
then wondered if she’d been there all along

She said almost forever
and that she had been singing,
just hoping I would hear her loving song

Did it go like this?
A hummed for her a stanza
and saw a smile turn up on her face

She said, yes that is it,
I guess you really heard it
the whole time I’ve been singing in this place

I really liked her song,
the beat was smooth and steady
It seemed that how I walked was like a dance

Just like a metronome,
clicking to a tempo,
hypnotically it put me in a trance

I buttoned up my chest,
real tight around the collar
to make sure that she would not run away

And listened to her song,
remembering her smile,
forever in my heart I know she’ll stay

Steel follows steel,
a click clack rhythm in
metronome vibrations lulls nervousness,
counting forgotten miles
in heartbeat pulsations
of desired destinations

Endless tracks hug
winding ways carved through nature
Windows frame new beginnings,
watching mountain peaks
pass by in snow capped splendor
as flashing red lights hold up traffic

Facing forward,
leaving behind what was,
heading north on a one way ticket
to my imagination’s quest,
chasing a dream that hopefully waits
just beyond the next crossing

I wish I could write
a poem so perfect
It would be the last one
that I’d need to write

One that would tell you
exactly my feelings
Filling your heart on
this warm summer night

Words so amazing
your eyes would not falter
Gazing the verses
with me as your view

Every breath that you
find you are breathing
Comes with a song
of a love ever true

Phrases that touch where
no other has touched you
Caressing your dreams
with a feeling so pure

If only I could I would
write you that poem
So there’d be no doubt
you’re the one I adore

Wishing upon a star

I made a wish upon a star
this evening in the sky
To send my love to where you are
as it goes shooting by
Stephan Sep 2018
~

Once upon a midnight dreary, as I ponder weak and weary
Falling as a distant star comes reaching of my heart
Knees connect with fertile soil, darkness on this hour loyal
Twilight bid its fond farewell as evening spends its start
~
Chilled this open field a’ rest, facing east my own confess
Silence comes in wintered thoughts a’ calling to my mind
Lone is found this majesty, born mine lonely eyes to see
There upon the heavens form this beauty I do find
~
Reaching for your open hand, actions of an empty man
Seeking but the wisdom that shall lead me to your side
Grasping at the frosted air, evermore I long to share
In amongst these feelings glowing bright this velvet sky
~
Take me, oh this soul does plead, thee shall be my every need
Endlessly I cherish every vision sent above
As a light does glisten free, when your smile my heart does see
Fending off this winter with the warmth of your sweet love
I was challenged to use the opening line of Poe’s “The Raven”
“Once upon a midnight dreary, as I ponder weak and weary”
and create a love poem following the form, cadence and rhyming pattern of the line

Encore, encore!!
Stephan May 2016
.

Pacing backstage like a bull in the batter
Thrashing about as if china exists
Driven to drink by some wine on a platter
Blowing off steam for he could not resist

Snorting a scene when the lines are recited
Reading the script just a few seconds more
Up with the curtain by hands so excited
Wishing the winter had closed every door

Shoveling snow in a thong made of paper
Counting the flakes that attended his show
In the front row as the smiles did taper
Sat an old woman he knew long ago

She held a bag printed green with a flower
Wore her hair up and her underwear down
Gazed up at him as if she held the power
Reached in her satchel and pulled out a crown

Glistening gold trimmed in jewelry gleaming
Something indeed that was fit for a king
Pinching his skin just in case he was dreaming
Thinking it must be the silliest thing

Low went the lights with the audience hushing
Now was his time as he stood on the mark
Hoping that nobody noticed him blushing
The brightest of red in the darkest of dark

Then as he spoke in an accent so fitting
Words written out by some dude named Shakespeare
Looked to his feet where the crown was now sitting
An inscription inside “For a lousy King Lear”

He searched for the woman and noticed her leaving
Screaming out loud, “What’s the meaning of this?”
When she looked back, now his eyes not believing
She wore his face as she blew him a kiss

Had he gone mad as the world became hazy
Spinning in place, royalty gone insane
“Give me your praises,” he shouted like crazy
“Tell me you love me and tell me your name”

“I’m called Cordelia and I far from love you
Your acting *****, you’ve no talent at all
I’ll give you no praise, no that’s something I won’t do”

And there she stood as the curtain did fall

She started to laugh as the sirens were blaring
They carted him off on a stretcher of gold
To the asylum with everyone staring
Tossing the tickets that they had been sold

Then out of nowhere the crowd started cheering
She took his stage, now her kingdom, she swore
Taking a bow, the applause so endearing
She had no choice but to give an encore
Something I posted a few weeks ago but took down, giving it another try.

*Whispering fog on a dense morning breathes,
muting thoughts of where the daylight has gone
Silhouette tree branches silent and gray

misted endeavors weavimg desperate desires

Loss has claimed every color I have seen,
stark realities in the visions now cast on my heart
Emptiness leaks upon unsuspecting dreams,
imagination finds nothing beyond this aching chest,
merely opaque outlines with little meaning

Vast is this enclosure that harbors my eyes in caged sight,
fence posts and wire strung in patterns of locked decisions
aimlessly meandering a vacuous expanse
Chained link desires that can’t find the gate,
only mailboxes of memories never sealed or stamped

I walk this lonely path as it is my job, my destiny
A soul’s responsibility to wonder with longing eyes
where you might be on this,
my day with no sun, no color, no beauty, no love
And I miss you, for you were all of those things to me

Sorrow now drizzles from lingering clouds,
drenching my life in despair
Dampening spirits a’ fall of the rain,
empty these puddles I stare

Drowning in loneliness filling the day,
void of the sun we adored
Flooding the vacancy found in my life,
steady the reasons now poured

Floating along every gutter of fear,
weathered my face of the storm
Crying as caverns appear in my heart,
gaping the holes that now form

If this shall be what my destiny brings,
slowly I take my last breath
For I am nothing at all without her,
drifting this current of death

Take me for I have no reason to be,
sink every dream I have known
Hiding from truth that I don’t want to hear,
forever lost and alone

It was on a wonderful summer morning when
sun warmed emotions met at the intersection of our hearts
Love bloomed in fragrant bouquets of forever dreams
while cattails and lily pads dotted flowing streams of affection
Every winding path led to a place we’d always longed to be where butterflies accompanied us to afternoon picnics on grassy foothills
and lemonade kisses tasted sweeter than lavender honey
Soft breezes sung to us in symphonic whispers
as sprawling oaks reached overhead in canopies of shaded bliss
Blue skies caressed our bodies as we tenderly embraced
the beauty our love had sculpted on the landscape
and all was perfect in my world –

I thought about writing a poem
something with you I would share
Though as I now look to find you

I wonder each night what you’re doing,
who do you follow around
As I just hang around staring
at a blank spot on the ground

Is it there or is it not?
Before my eyes a deluge of inner thoughts converge,
broadcast on an open plain
for lack of words to feign its impossible meaning

Does it dance or does it walk?
Upon a stair cased flowered veil to deceive,
brilliant the light does mimic
in effervescent golden silhouettes

Will it scream or will it sing?
Only time will fill the feast with ample solutions
Listen close as mornings find us
sleeping on empty cartons of a desperate phrase

Does it live or does it die?
Within my mind the scattered illusions come to bear
of endings soon to find their path
in freedoms born of cascade truths on darkened city streets

I circled the rumors in red on my sheet
Sat there and looked for a while
Planned out my day just a start to the week
All in a wait and see style

Considered telling, but then changed my mind
Fractures in time will be known
Feeling betrayed in a truth that does blind
Shunning the light that is shone

So many pass that do not disappear
Hoping the news will retrieve
Headlines and sorrow and shedding a tear
Praying the masses believe

Drinking the praise through a white plastic straw
Savoring every drop
Laughing inside as they digest it all
Knowing someday it will stop

Ordering stones with a carved epitaph
Dictating words as they’re bled
Counting the frowns in the day’s aftermath
Watching from shadows ahead

I could be wrong, I have been there before
Choices I tend to conceal
Though I do know there is one thing for sure
This is not one they will steal

leaving you alone to face
the coming frigid season?

The empty stem, leafless,
void of its once lustrous color,
waving in the chilly winds answered,
"Don't worry, come spring I will
have many new wonderful petals
adorning me, making me
beautiful once again."

"I know, but none of them

Finding street signs pointing towards my dreams,

Felt the sun on my shoulders
Sang a song in my mind without words

Then walked towards the future (let the potholes laugh)

though I shall merely look away

For mine will gaze the place she points
where boundaries keep us apart
I’ll not see any stars this night
now blinded by a broken heart

Same things

You are the glow as I crawl through the darkness,
lighting my way so these eyes they can see
A soft woolen blanket when winter is reaching,
wrapping the warmth of your arms around me

You are the shelter when storms fill the heavens,
keeping me dry as each raindrop does fall
A calming voice that I hear in the distance,
when every sorrow about me does call

You are the strength as my knees slowly weaken,
lifting me up when I’ve nothing to give
The precious life as I feel I am dying,
giving me hope when I don’t want to live

You are my world, every day I am facing,
showing me love is a beautiful view
All that I wish is whenever you need me,
I will be all of these same things for you
