i write about what i know because
ive got nothing better to say
and i try to fit the length of a thought
onto a single page
because i just hate it when
ive got an entire poem or whatever
almost finished,
only a few words left,
and  they just wont fit

and plus who am i to waste
a slip of paper
on a phrase or two
that doesnt make sense alone
and that (who
am i kidding)
no one is going to read anyway?

unless there is someone
out there
that has always wanted to know
about what its like
to watch a person

transform from
water to ice crystals
in a matter of minutes

or how it feels to hate your
father and then weep at the thought
and then hate yourself for weeping

to blindly step with
bare feet
on a baby bird
and feel its naked skull crumble beneath
your heel

to dance alone, throwing yourself
into frenzied spirals, smashing
against the walls and breaking
apart like a tired old star
to collapse then
letting the light drain from you

letting the               light
drain
from you
and reaching up to touch it with quiet hands...

When we walked up to the door of our favourite coffee pub
You tangled your fingers around my own
And with a twist of my wrist
We went in

We order our usual from the usuals
The baristas never changed though the drinks did with the seasons
As I pull out the exact change from my coat
You shake some melted snow from your hair

We grab a seat at a nook by the window
There was a ring of dried coffee on the table
I fill it in with my mug
You joke it’s my OCD but I say it’s my love for the unappreciated

We listen to a woman with a guitar at the makeshift stage
She strums off a couple chords and sings with her lips
She fades into the background as I turn to look at you
Your eyes are closed to turn up the volume

I close mine too and let the music direct me
My mind swims like a trapeze *******
I sway with the strings and strums
Your hand grasps mine as I fall into the safety net

The guitarist is packing up
Our coffee or what’s left of it is cold
You lean over and
Two angels kissed like sinners
Two sinners kissed like angels

I paint an island for you and for me,
I color it brightly - the sky and sea.
Then to shine a golden orb,
a sun that's there to keep us warm.

And this island, you soon shall find,
will follow the twinklings of your mind.
So if, perhaps, you wish to behold
a sailing boat (of perfect mold)
in which you want to sail away -
Then by and by, you certainly may.

Or would you rather sit and stare
at dancing stars through crisp air?
Why then my darling, it will be true.
Anything less isn't enough for you.

As for me my desire is not so grand:
To sit with you and hold your hand.
I'll be the light guiding your way,
the supporting strength day after day.
Someone to listen, understand, and care,
Just think of me and I'll be there.

This island I painted, for you and for me
(such brightly colored sky and sea)
is not a dream but in our hearts reality true,
a place to fully love and appreciate you.

circa 2000
So what if I do fall, and you choose to be taken with me;
Would I not, with every care, place a cigarette
Between your lips?

Why, I hardly recognise you.

There is a camera in the first drawer
On the right side of the bedroom
As soon as you enter the door,

But, of course,

Let's wait until, amongst our
Nicotine pleasures,
We find the right kind of laugh;
It is a matter of perspective -- do you
See, if I put it to you like that?

It is by laughter
That I would rather be remembered.
Such maudlin things as falls are better
Left far, far alone.
