Builder City
I wander down desolate streets that I’ve always known as towns
But now they have become havens for bright yellow helmets and noisy sounds
Gone is the hustle bustle of a lively cosmopolitan afternoon
In its place is the solitary ear shot of a builder humming a tune
A cigarette here and a cigarette there
Crackling laughter filling the air
What is this strange world I find myself in
Where does this madness end and where does it begin
It’s begins with a virus that really is pretty ******
Which has created this unique world that I like to call builder city
God created life and the man created walls
And the men are toiling on when the rich world comes and calls
Scaffolds of metal erected nice and high
As the magic of construction happens loudly under sky
Roadblocks and lights and the lifting of a hand
Halts the nonexistent traffic whilst a visor carries sand
Huddled together, social distancing at its worse
Putting forth life and limb on the line to fill a draining purse
They don’t need your concern or trending pity
Cause they are builders strong and true working in the place I call builder city

Family
All is quiet as my brood all sleep
Crazy days and insane ways
The memories are mine to keep

On golden sands we merrily play
With cricket bat and bluish ball
My role of fatherhood guides my way

I watch them closely with love
Protective and loving
As the sun shines up above

We eat fish and chips close to the sea
An immense sense of pride stirs
Observing the resemblances of me

Knowing I need to steer them along
Through their up and downs
In our arms they will always belong

Adam and Eve
They are golden
They are rare
The darlings of a summer night
I call them the perfect pair

He with his eyes
Her with her hair
God created the immaculate couple
And nothing else would compare

Adam was the boy
Eve was the girl
Wandering freely
Like a glistening pearl

A blueprint of life
The future to behold
No other word could describe these two
That word was simply Gold

Saddled, unsaddled
Wild and free
We love to run

Up the hills

In my dressing gown

I admire their colours
And their nasal sounds

Distant love
Like ghosts in the night
Sailing through the wind
Roaming and moaning
About the times when we sinned
Never quite at peace
Searching for the shore
Desperate to leave the water
To sleep for ever more
Why do we never find sanctuary
Our souls waiting to maroon
We crossed into dangerous waters
Hastily and much to soon
Let’s sing our song together
Holding hands in the dimming light
A sweet smile we give to each other
As we tip toe along in the night
A kiss from now and the past
Blessed but never forgotten
I remember how things once were
Before the troubled became the rotten

A beach story
Pebbles in salt
The salt of the sea
A beautiful moment
For my dog and me

Waves come a calling
Spraying me with the tide
An idyllic picture book setting
As the dog wags at my side

The roar of the ocean
Vibrates the drum of my ear
A fine sight to behold
My Labrador bolts away in fear

Boats litter the blue horizon
From all four corners of the world
And the dog races away
Chasing the stick I just hurled

I love watching the seagulls
Flying over my head
The dog sniffs at a dormant jellyfish
Lying transparent on the sea bed

Casually walking over the dunes
Through brambles and golden sands
I lovingly stroke my dogs yellow fur
With the palms of my warm hands

Twins
I see their innocence slipping
As they walk merrily over to school
And it upsets me how their growing
But I know that’s the golden rule
It was only yesterday that I could hold them
And swing them in my arms
Now if I try to lift them
My body sounds a hundred alarms
They believe their American or rappers
And they do nothing more than fight
I remember when they’d both lie together
Lost in each others sight
God only knows what the future holds
Will they still respect me when I’m over the hill
Or will they put me a sweet smelling home
Sat in a chair all perfectly still.

Tramp
Into the torn trilby upright stands a feather
Hiding hair enthused with dirt and a touch of woodland heather
Blood shot eyes look tired and heavily sunken
From the bottled spirits that the mouth has frequently drunken
A Scarf hangs down which was once so beautifully green
Hard to envisage it when it was vibrant, pristine and so clean
Rivers of blood dribble down a grey woolly chin
From tins and cans creeping out of an overflowing bin
Hidden clothes under mould spots and wretched smells
A heart that’s barely alive miraculously somehow still dwells
On cardboard is scribbled a beg for food and change
Well worded and well meant but with a hint of subtle derange
Humanity shuffles past like ghosts lost in time
Rejecting and ignoring his pleas for help, attention and social climb
Stuck in a painful slumber and thinking what could have been
A ***** is now a figurine derived from a portrait made from the obscene

Music in my room
I woke on the Sunday
To the glorious sound of music
Whistling round my room
And into the very piping of my soul
Cause my father was a dreamer
A listener of all and everything
That was the warmest I felt then
When the sounds splashed against my face
Of course he was completely oblivious
To the lifting it created in my shell
As I snuggled in my quilt
Enjoying the bond it was creating between us

Left
So pure yet immature
Wrong time when premature
Struggling for oxygen that isn’t there
For the eye it’s an emotional affair
Falls down stumbles round
Lifts up and hits the ground
Wheezes little breezes
Conjures up little sneezes
Throws out a lame gentle moan
Which evolves ever slowly into a groan
Nestled in bed made of print
Underneath the brambles and the flint
Cold wraps around this precious soul
Missing warmth like fires burnt with coal
Hands raise up the abandoned vessel
Into a thick blanket the orphan can know nestle

I’ve seen this before
A long long time ago
But I’ll watch it anyway
Cause I like it
Word for word
Scene for scene
And that bit where that happens
Brilliant

I’ve not seen this one
But everyone else has
So I’m pleased I’m watching it
Cause I missed it
First time round
Whilst at work
When all the world discussed it
Frustrating

I’ve forgot about this one
It just escaped my mind
Which isn’t like me
I usually remember everything
Especially funny episodes
Which make me laugh
And pull me in
Thankful

I didn’t like this one
It was pretty crap
Even for me
And I’m quite tolerant
But I’ll watch it again
Cause it seems better now
And I’m enjoying it more

My ghost
The man in pale light
Transparent like a hologram
He stood

I blinked

Once

A thousand times

Of seeing the impossible and clear misunderstood

Why are you showing yourselves to me
Is it just cause you think you can
What message are you trying to relay to me
And why

Do I remind of a soul from your day

Do I look

Like a person

You once knew

Is limbo so cold and scary
Do feel you need to speak
Are you sins embedded so acutely
That you exist
A supernatural freak

Where have you gone
Who’s stole you fire
I’m not scared or falling to the floor

I just feel a sense of curiosity

As I turn

And head back home

Italy’s footmen
There they go, blue masks, heavy boots
Spraying their guns in sparking suits
There they go, under the sun, as she creeps
Working alone as Italy sleeps
There they go, the front line, the protectors
Spraying away, the virus rejectors
There they go, quietly waking, in isolation
Slowly but surely saving their nation
There they go, up and down, street to street
No one to smile to and no one to greet
There they go, the workers, the foot men
When they’ve cleansed what happens then
There they go, the exterminators, the real fight
Hoping to make it happy and to make it right
There they go, calmly killing gestation
Hopefully lifting this strong Italian nation

Smokers
Coughing and laughing
In the mouth and out the mouth
******* the stick fast and slow
Smokers of the world I understand you
Don’t feel shame and don’t feel bad
Cause you feel you smoke to cope
It’s not all about that really
It’s a pleasure and a release
A fun tool when in company
Yes it can still **** and **** it still can
But treat it with moderation
Don’t abuse its powerful pull
Just treat it like a friend
Don’t have sixty cause that’s just greed
Certainly don’t have eighty
Cause your wallets will bleed
Just have maybe two
And when in company maybe five or four
Smoking isn’t a curse
Or a society nuisance
It’s just life and it’s furniture
Nothing more and nothing less

Running through gardens
With no beg your pardons

Like half eaten chicken legs and bacon rind

Aimless minds with no plan in sight

Through tunnels all dark and over flowing
With excrement that’s shows no signs of slowing
Long noses and curling whip like tails
Who is it who puts the wind in your sails

Misunderstood? A nasty creation
Is it true your the devils relation
In the shadows the rats like to roam
Through the grime and filth they believe to be home

A story of illness
As the neon casts it shadow over us
Away from the dark twinkling streets
We ascend the stairs to Eden
To see what secrets and treasures it holds
A strange kind of aura hangs in the air
And the clientele seem alien and pure
Drinks are served in obscure shaped vessels
As my eyes adjust to fluorescent beams
Nicotine a thing now forgotten
But perfume and aftershave still alive and well
The aroma of youth surrounds my being
As I saunter into the throngs of hell
This is not the place of dreams
Nor is it the place of the well
This is the place that remains so hidden
Under the catacombs of city walls
Fighting to get out of this bedlam
Desperately trying to escape into the dark
A sense of ones own paranoia
Looms ever larger over me
I am not in a place of danger
And the crowd do not wish my demise
The truth lies in my swirling cranium
Sometimes we need to learn
When things don’t feel right
I leave this place into the lamplight
Goodnight and sorry for being a burden
My how I realise my predicament
I am fragile and need wisdom

My love
Kisses on my face
All sloppy and wet
A dream of a man on the brink of waking
They are the best ones yet

A smile of a face
Full of beauty and fun
As the light comes through a tiny window
Made by the eternal sun

In a world of questions and chaos
I believe she was made for me
Through the pains and trials of social ills
Her radiance is a joy to see

Tough as old boots but made of heart
A reassurance wrapped in leather
I cross my fingers and long to believe
That we will always be together
I woke up this morning to a very different day
The sun up in the sky had left and gone away
Birds were no longer singing outside in the trees
I suddenly felt tearful as I dropped to my knees

Gone was my yawn and waking morning sigh
A smile seemed non existent so I didn’t even try
I never saw it coming and couldn’t even prepare
For the change in my head what was lying there.
.
Shivers ran up and down like the winter frost
As I swam frantically in the ocean of the lost
It made me sad and devoid of all my feeling
So I looked up and just studied the celling.

The cosy mattress now became my new home
My stagnant imprint embedded into its foam
It ****** me down into its spongy bowels
I folded myself over like warm woolly towels.

I needed to rise and slap on my happy face
So I could wade deceivingly at a nice calm pace
I worried about the state of my humanity
Scared of bordering on the edges of insanity.

I debated whether to over eat or get blind drunk
Whether to sleep or smoke some bad skunk
But I slowly curled up into a ball as feared
On the day my mind disappeared.

Our love
Champagne never tasted the same
As we watched the sunset wane
It circled and lit up the sea
Exposing just my lovely and me

Trawlers bobbed on the water
As I joked about how I’d caught her
All beautiful and full of light
On a cold December night

Then we both lay down in the sand
Smiling as she squeezed my hand
I told her she was the one for me
And she replied with you I feel free

A cool wind encompassed our skin
Sending shivers deep from within
Never had I felt so soothed
As she kissed me and the earth moved

The sea played its song into our ears
Making us forget all anxieties and fears
Laughing cause the beach was our own
Cherishing the fact we were alone

Until it did a mess
On top of my bog
It didn’t say sorry
Which made me mad
So I did something
I know was bad
I took its *****
Not literally mind
And threw them out
Which wasn’t kind
That day I felt guilty
From my head to my feet
Maybe he didn’t mean to
Do a mess on my seat
So I went to the pet shop
And bought my dog a bone
Afterwards I shown him photos
On my iPhone
We were friends for a short time
Then he became a pest
But the final straw came last night
When he did a mess all over my chest

The river woman
The woman saunters by the stream
Then kneels and strokes the water so blue
A million stars shine up above
She does a gentle sneeze - atchoo
Humming a song she knows from youth
As her ears become one with the breeze
Earths chorus lights up the night
And bounces through the trees
A woman alone is not a good thing
In this place of wicked ills
But the cross she wears around her neck
Serves as a protector against evil wills
Her wrinkling face seems effervescent
And sadness exudes from her face
Blood sees her exit the mortal coil
As the mans shadow takes her place

The dormant house
In the stillness of night
The beams of the moonlight
Scorch the marble floor
Amidst the creaking of a door
As this old house breathes again

Curtains blow up high
Causing dust to live and fly
Like pores from human skin
Then a can made of tin
Rolls through the medium of the wind

Cats meow in the air
A chorus of I don’t care
Crooked floorboards talk so loud
The moon hides behind a cloud
Plunging the house into total darkness

Then slowly the clock turns back
To when silence leads the attack
Again the darkness fights the light
In a battle with the night
For control of this dormant house

Drum beats, cymbals and electrics
Flow through the annex

Songs bounce on the air
And vending machines release
In the old gothic corridor
Bags, books and pens
Projectors, desks and improvisation
Movement and stretching
In the mirrors of a dance studio
Cafe, pool table and laughter
Cigarette smoke up my nostril
Small television up on a shelf flashing
As Motörhead seeps from the jukebox
Rehearsals for a play
Nerves slowly stand to attention
Then the applause from the crowd
Before the scaffold and lights come down
Off to the pub for beer
The gang of goths terrify on the street
Being kissed quite unexpectedly
When naive and unworldly
Now home slumped on the sofa
Head spinning like a top
Up at a ludicrously late time of day

Bird
Last night I had a dream
About a glorious silver bird
It bobbed and weaved on the air
And not a sound could be heard

I watched it fly to the south
To the north to the east and the west
Never did it stray from its path
It just knew which way was best

It flew over deserts and oceans
It bathed in the salt of the seas
It circled the forest of Sherwood
Then stopped for a breather in the trees

It was free and it was happy
As the clouds engulfed its feathers
Over the beautiful scenic woodlands
It danced among the wild heathers

Then I awoke rather unexpectedly
To a noise on my window pane
On the ledge outside was a sight to behold
It was the silver bird singing in the rain

Overwhelming peace
When the rain has ended
And the soil is soft and wet
I will remember my beautiful garden
The closest thing that I could get
To perfection on a scale
That I could never reach in life
Because the world is just to demanding
As it cuts you like a knife

Draining all your energy
And chipping away at your soul
Leaving you lost and empty
As you stare into a hole
Of despair and a bleak future
That doesn’t seem to end
Enclosing like a nightmare
Without love from a decent friend

Until I found my garden
Which ultimately found me
Calling me in for attention
As I planted my first tree
Then I turned over the soil
And watched the flowers grow
Such a feeling of overwhelming peace
Before the rain started to flow

Three spirits
I sometimes wish I could be visited
By three ghosts like in the dickens tale
Showing me the good, the bad and the ugly
Pushed against the wall by a rusting nail

A ghost of Christmas past
Reminding of my early years gone by
Showing me days that made me happy
And the days that made me cry

A ghost of Christmas present
Where my troubles are all laid bare
But in between all the hardship and mess
My heart is always there

A ghost of Christmas future
And this the one I fear most
Because I don’t know what it brings
This spirit this drifting host

But it shows me things are good
It shows me happiness in the heat
And I feel comfort in the knowledge
That it will kind it will be sweet

My children will grow up healthy
And become the people I hope they will
Strong with a sense of goodness
As they love me when I’m over the hill

Lastly my dearest will always love me
She will stay right by my side
Our flames will never wilt or diminish
We will never run we will never hide

So thank you spirits for your reassurance
When you come on the hour chime
I sleep in a peaceful sleep now
And thank you for you precious time

A tale of age
Straight from the page
Of an historians book
Which is worth a little look
As you may know a street
Which once held your feet
When you were a child
All meek and mild
But it’s different and not the same
From when you played that game
With a bat and a ball
All petite and small
No tarmac was laid
Or council workers paid
But you existed all the same
Like the past in times game
And you touched the floor
Where fingers have done before
So again please take a look
At an historians written book
Where somebody in your hand
Once stood where you stand
