War time
Prisoners of war
Or prisoners of pride
Or prisoners of peace
Or something beside
The flip of a coin
To decide your fate
To decide your future
To simply change fate
Through the fields
Men with guns
Men with grenades
Men making runs
War is over
Relief to be here
Relief to be home
Relief brings a tear

A beach story
Pebbles in salt
The salt of the sea
A beautiful moment
For my dog and me

Waves come a calling
Spraying me with the tide
An idyllic picture book setting
As the dog wags at my side

The roar of the ocean
Vibrates the drum of my ear
A fine sight to behold
My Labrador bolts away in fear

Boats litter the blue horizon
From all four corners of the world
And the dog races away
Chasing the stick I just hurled

I love watching the seagulls
Flying over my head
The dog sniffs at a dormant jellyfish
Lying transparent on the sea bed

Casually walking over the dunes
Through brambles and golden sands
I lovingly stroke my dogs yellow fur
With the palms of my warm hands

Imaginary friend
I used to have a friend
Or did he have me
We spoke for several hours
About family about games about tv

I used to have a friend
Or was he really there
I chased him around and around the house
Then watched him sit and stare

I used to have a friend
Who would tell me to be bad
So much that my parents would scold me
And then I’d feel sad

I used to have a friend
But one day he just disappeared
No goodbye no note no reason
As quick as he appeared

I used to have a friend
Who was imaginary I feel
But to me in those childhood days
He was there and he was real

I used to have a friend
When he went I had to make more
I suppose though if you ever came back
We could talk like we did before

Caravan
Lined up together
With whitish glow
Back to front
To and fro
Blocks of wood
Patch of grass
Little rooms
And windows of glass
Sun goes in
Night stays out
As a night man checks
Who’s lurking about
Couples love nest
Families retreat
Takeaway food
For all to eat
Sleep till late
Cause they can
Or rise up early
In the caravan

The dancing butterflies
The dancing butterflies
See how they fly
Like a scene from Swan Lake
Like birds in the sky
Skimming over grass
And twisting through the tress
Beautiful butterflies full of love
Beautiful butterflies in the breeze
Majestic and mesmerising
Enjoying their little chase
A smile at their wonder
A smile on my face
Do they weave in anger
Are they at war in flight
Is it just a friendly game
Is it love at first sight
The dancing butterflies
Racing around in the heat
I’m gripped in utter fascination
I’m gripped firmly to my seat
A thrill
The chill
Crawls up my back
The breeze
In the trees
Makes me jump
The fright
Of the night
Scares us to death
Oh shame
Above our name
When we run for the gate
We talk
As we walk
Away from the old graveyard

A loved one missed
The bed still has a niche
An imprint where you lay
I stare at it for hours and hours
It’s a comfort to me that way
Nobody saw you leave
You just slipped out yesterday
A note that seemed so trivial
Explains how you felt that day
Sadness hides in corners
Makes you feel so alone
The receiver hadn’t been lifted
Why didn’t you use the phone
To tell us where you were going
Help us to try and understand
Your head was soaring through the clouds
Without me holding your hand
The bed still has a niche
Where your body used to lie
And now I’m going to stare again
To try and understand why
Juliet said to Romeo
‘I don’t like your hair!’
And Romeo said to Juliet
‘Well I don’t really care!’
Then Juliet said to Romeo
‘Don’t talk to me like that!’
And Romeo said to Juliet
‘Sorry baby J, I’ll buy myself a hat!’
Juliet smiled all sweetly
‘That would be a start’
Romeo replied to Juliet
‘You have evil in your heart!’
Juliet gave him a scowl
‘You know that isn’t true!’
Romeo looked all sheepish
‘I know thats not true too’
Juliet kissed his cheek
‘Your a dream, that’s what you are’
Romeo went red faced
‘I’m embarrassed, my little star’
Juliet gave him a hug
‘You’ll definitely do for me’
Romeo squeezed her all lovingly
‘Make us a cup of tea’

The Indians
Round a fire that’s burning
They dance to the dead
Wearing crowns of feathers
They sing what’s in their head
Wigwams with a one way entrance
Like igloos made for the sun
The outside world is the enemy
In a war thats never won
On horse back they ride the prairies
Hunting for food to eat
Slaying any living beast
In the glare of the blistering heat
Names that reflect emotions
And the characters hiding within
Nicknames not designed for fun
These are the titles of kin
Totem poles and symbols
Representing events and times long gone
Images made by the strongest hands
Into the cedar trees they’re carved on
From the everlasting centuries
And into present day
Native people stay alone
Cause it’s their culture and their way
The belief of the Indians
Whatever tribe they are
Is that that the man will one day descent
From the sky’s and a star
They are surrounded by the ghosts
Of the warriors and the chiefs
Who kept them safe and kept them warm
From the engulfing cavalry thief’s

We found oysters
We found oysters
In slimy crates
Caught by fisherman
And their mates

We found oysters
And stole the lot
In terms of stealing
These were hot

We found oysters
Then shown my dad
He ate about four
To which I’m glad

We found oysters
But they weren’t for me
They smelt of sea salt
Fresh from the sea

We found oysters
Behind the rocks
Left unattended
Without any locks
Here am I
Growing in the rain
Forgotten by humanity
A stem with no brain
Charmless and ugly
Often hurled
The useless feature
Of a dying world
But you are wrong
There’s more to me
Cause I’m alive
Can’t you see
With my beautiful leaves
And my amazing shade
My looks will stay
As yours will fade
I am beauty
With a radiant glow
Spreading my magic
As the wind starts to blow
Don’t ignore me
Or stand on my soul
This here is a wonder
Growing out of this hole
In this land of nature
I am strong in my tower
The majestic and the mighty
The narcissist little flower

Driver meets a snake
Demon eyes staring red
Fill the driver full of dread
Fangs are shown
And poison thrown
Onto the sheen
Of a windscreen
The car she dances
As the snake it glances
And then it’s gone
Then we’re back to one
On this mountain pass
Behind the reflective glass
Of the military jeep
Up hills so steep
The snake was there
And it gave me a scare
In my drive along
This path in Hong Kong

A story of illness
As the neon casts it shadow over us
Away from the dark twinkling streets
We ascend the stairs to Eden
To see what secrets and treasures it holds
A strange kind of aura hangs in the air
And the clientele seem alien and pure
Drinks are served in obscure shaped vessels
As my eyes adjust to fluorescent beams
Nicotine a thing now forgotten
But perfume and aftershave still alive and well
The aroma of youth surrounds my being
As I saunter into the throngs of hell
This is not the place of dreams
Nor is it the place of the well
This is the place that remains so hidden
Under the catacombs of city walls
Fighting to get out of this bedlam
Desperately trying to escape into the dark
A sense of ones own paranoia
Looms ever larger over me
I am not in a place of danger
And the crowd do not wish my demise
The truth lies in my swirling cranium
Sometimes we need to learn
When things don’t feel right
I leave this place into the lamplight
Goodnight and sorry for being a burden
My how I realise my predicament
I am fragile and need wisdom

Me
Me
Full of life and emotion
I am like an ocean
With rocks in my depths
And the occasional hidden wrecks
I am calm in the sun
Relaxed and full of fun
But I am cold in the rain
When the water takes my brain
When I capsize from my boat
Through the clouds I like to float
Seeking dreams like we all do
Not just for me but also for you
Sometimes sulky a childlike disposition
Means my growing up is still in transition
But I do believe in good
Which I think we all should
I’m balanced but complex as you see
But that’s my vessel my soul my me

What matters
I had a dream one night
Where the world was fluffy and bright
And everybody I walked amongst
Was pleasant and a real delight
Nobody raised an eyebrow
And people sort of cared
Dreams can do that somehow
How I wish it was reality now
Cause dreams can reflect your thought
A nice illusion just like magic
In a net your subconscious is caught
Taking a one away from a nought
And that one then means something
Like people in the world today
That one has plenty to bring
Like happiness love and fun and the ability to sometimes sing
Likes to write likes to give likes to share
I think this is what my dream meant
One being and one soul out there
Needs understanding education and care
I woke up and my brain was in tatters
Even a coffee wouldn’t help me out
In a world of chaos and mad hatters
I realised that then that everybody else matters

Kids
Splash goes the rock
That I throw over my head
As the youths stand and laugh
When it falls into the bed
The bed of water all foamy
Which shimmers in the sun
This is the life right here
The days of having fun
Not like my father
All stressed and with hair of grey
And not like my mother
She hides anxieties every day
I ride my bike through the streets of town
And kiss any girl who I decide
Especially the really naughty ones
They're wildness they never hide
I’m a smoker with my circle
And we all like to drink a lot
Drugs don’t really entertain us
We like to protect the minds that we’ve got
I love life and life loves me
I know I’ll grow up some day
But for now I’m happy to rock and roll
This is the time the kids come out to play

Underneath the bridge
Underneath the stony bridge
On the banks of the ***** river
A couple enter the loving phase
Shes the recipient and he’s the giver
A sound of lust enters the night
But is swept away along the rushing tide
Of the murky depths of blackness
Called water where the reeds do hide
A regular spot for the couples
Who like to sexually engage
In promiscuity beyond belief
Away from the conformist cage
Then back up the banks they scurry
To the pubs and beds where they lay
Scurrying discreetly in the darkness
Like the rats who come out to play

Failure
Failure what a word
Such a pitiful feeling
It’s really quite absurd
But failure
It’s real
I have the prove you see
Cause lately I’ve been believing
That the term failure
Relates to me
I can’t seem to do things
Everything turns out wrong
Even when Lady Luck sings
The devils brings her down with his prongs
Failure it’s real
And I can tell you why
Because no matter how hard I work
No matter how hard I try
I bring a problem in
Which makes me start to cry
Failure yes I believe it
It’s just creeping around the wall
Waiting to drop its net on me
To make me feel small
But I guess somebody’s got to be
I guess nobody’s great
I’ll just carry it on my shoulders some more
I’ll just carry the weight
Of being a failure

Builder City
I wander down desolate streets that I’ve always known as towns
But now they have become havens for bright yellow helmets and noisy sounds
Gone is the hustle bustle of a lively cosmopolitan afternoon
In its place is the solitary ear shot of a builder humming a tune
A cigarette here and a cigarette there
Crackling laughter filling the air
What is this strange world I find myself in
Where does this madness end and where does it begin
It’s begins with a virus that really is pretty ******
Which has created this unique world that I like to call builder city
God created life and the man created walls
And the men are toiling on when the rich world comes and calls
Scaffolds of metal erected nice and high
As the magic of construction happens loudly under sky
Roadblocks and lights and the lifting of a hand
Halts the nonexistent traffic whilst a visor carries sand
Huddled together, social distancing at its worse
Putting forth life and limb on the line to fill a draining purse
They don’t need your concern or trending pity
Cause they are builders strong and true working in the place I call builder city

Grumpy old man
Old misery guts in your chair
Shouting with venom
Over a cup of whisky
With a sprinkle of lemon
Miserable old **** of a man
Coughing long and loud
Into the room full of dust
Swirling like a cloud
Sad pathetic old man
Full of hatred and bitter
In a room
Growing litter
Terribly angry old man
A curse for every line
Of bitterness and gloom
Just a grizzly old swine
Photos of a wife
All framed and looking nice
Now a distant memory
A thought not given twice

Yearning
I miss them
Mother and father
Sister and sister and another sister
Nephews and nieces
All the bits and pieces
That make up my tree
Friends and their folk
People I often see
They mean the world to me
Yes I miss them
I hope to see them soon
Face to face
Not on a phone
Or technical interface
To give them a hug
Or to just say hello
Remind them Im here
In case they didn’t know
Yes I miss them
I’m counting down the hours
Ticking off the days
Even though it’s not clear
How this story plays
And I can finally see their faces
I can finally touch their skin
We can laugh and we can cry
Releasing the love we’ve all kept in
Yes I miss them

Time
What is time?
A time to unwind
A moment to rewind
The day you’ve just left behind

Time
What is time?
A time to reflect
A need to now direct
The path you life is choosing

Time
What is time?
A time to come clean
A chance to be seen
When the world closes in all around you

Time
What is time?
A time on a clock
A rest near the dock
Remembering the years gone by

Time
What is time?
A time in the sun
A sense of all things fun
As you drink and enjoy the moment

Time
What is time?
The numbers on a dial
The minutes that we smile
When we’re happy and feeling good

Time
What is time?
A sadness along the way
A church to sit and pray
When somebody is taken from us

Time
What is time?
A never ending movement
Sometimes an improvement
From one realm and then to another

Time
What is time?
A traveller in the sky
Coming to tell us why
We need to treat each other nicer

And the red
Flowers
And the green
And the serene
Grass
Isn’t it beautiful
The sea
The clear blue sea

Under a tinge of orange
They call the sun
Floating on the ripples
Of the waves as they crash

Bouncing of the trees
Rising from the earth
A voice
A channel
The orchestral hum
That will come
With its existence
Isn’t it shear delight

Friendships blooming
Kindness looming
Solidarity in full song
The place we all belong

And now we’re there

And the place of liberty
Where Columbus sat
And many others follow
I believe inside

The tabby cat
I see a tabby cat at the bottom of my garden
And I wonder why it’s there
As the news gets bleaker
And the world gets weaker
I see it and just like to stare

I’ve seen the tabby cat everyday this week
And I wonder why it’s around
While the news is getting me down
And it’s forcing me to frown
It just lies down on the ground

Today I didn’t see the tabby cat
I didn’t see it in the grass
As the world keeps on dying
It was stopping me from crying
That friend I was seeing through my glass

Italy’s footmen
There they go, blue masks, heavy boots
Spraying their guns in sparking suits
There they go, under the sun, as she creeps
Working alone as Italy sleeps
There they go, the front line, the protectors
Spraying away, the virus rejectors
There they go, quietly waking, in isolation
Slowly but surely saving their nation
There they go, up and down, street to street
No one to smile to and no one to greet
There they go, the workers, the foot men
When they’ve cleansed what happens then
There they go, the exterminators, the real fight
Hoping to make it happy and to make it right
There they go, calmly killing gestation
Hopefully lifting this strong Italian nation

With love
I put my heart into a box
Then wrapped the box with ribbon
Your address was then wrote on it
And to the post office it was given

It boarded a van in Manchester
Then on an aeroplane it went for a ride
Along with a clear instruction
This parcel is fragile inside

You opened it on your birthday
And tears flowed from your eyes
You may be thousands of miles away
But love just never dies

Say my name
But say it loud
And I will come
Like a cloud
Hear my tap
And my distant call
Cause I’m around you

Wrapping you up
Keeping you warm
Hurting the negative
As it starts to swarm
I’ll guide your head
Cause I know it’s torn
You’ll feel special again
Like the day you were born
Say my name
But say it loud
I’m all all around you
Like a cloud

Love
She rolled around in knee high boots
All flirty with the grass
I placed my hand on her head
I’d got with her at last
We giggled for a life time
And made love for a million years
The insects were watching us in wonder
I could hear them in my ears
And then we spoke about nothing
But all the world come out
Silly little conversations
That none of us knew nothing about
We forgot about the time
The love got in the way
Fifty years and still as strong
It feels like yesterday

I walked through the shadows
Not all of them were death

I walked through angels
With bitterness in my breath

I walked through humanity
Confused of wrong and right

I walked through space

I walked through dream land
Crawling on hands and knees

I walked through dimensions
Looking for the keys

I walked through people
Feeling all their pain

I walked through myself
Hiding in the rain

I walked through nature
Buoyant and full of zest

I walked through peace
And laid myself to rest

Feelings
I’m loud I’m brash made of glass
Why do I act this way
Is it because I’m a bit naive
Or just confused everyday

I’m small I’m tall made to fall
Why do I feel this way
Is it because I listen around
And believe the words that they say

I’m up I’m down running around
Why do I hurt this way
Is it because my weak little mind
Deserts me come what may

I’m fun I’ve won I think I’m done
Why do I pretend this way
Is it because my other face
Makes me believe I’m doing okay

I’m in I’m out I need to shout
Why do I cry this way
Is it because my beating heart
Has died and gone away

I’m restless I’m mad my thoughts are sad
Why do I live this way
Is it because somewhere inside
My soul left me yesterday
The bees started fighting
Over what I just don’t know
One threw a sneaky punch
Then they all had a little go
Yellow and black in tandem
Buzzing round the bar
Stinging, punching and biting
Oh how very very bizarre
A glass went crash
A plate when whack
Mr Sting slumped to the floor
As the chair bounced of his back
The bee police were called in
All riot shields and batons of wood
To separate the warring gangs
As only they really could
They threw in the tear gas
And tasered many a bee
The trouble they dealt with in no time
And then home for some milk and honey

What about Black Sabbath

Can’t think
I’m trying to write a poem
But nothing seems to come
Nothing seems to interest me
And nothing that interests some
Every time I write a line
It’s gone within a second
Cause I just can’t get a thought
This is harder than I reckoned
I mean I don’t declare myself a poet
It’s more a past time game
But even in this early hour
This hobby is getting lame
I’m going to go to sleep now
And dream some unique dreams
Maybe I’ll find some inspiration
Cause the dreamworld is strange it seems
Then tomorrow I’ll be ready
To jot down something nice
Something that touches the soul
Something with a bit of spice
I’m not expecting miracles
I’m not expecting big things
I’d just like to have an idea
So let’s see what the morning brings

Of tutors who charged the earth
And I just said nothing

She asked me about my father
And if we still got on
Did he admire my work
So I replied
To him I’m not a son

Cause that’s a bit too rude
And finally she questioned my marriage

Quicker, much, much quicker
Run on your little limbs

Be quiet and don’t speak
No shuffling, no rustling the ground
I think we may safe

Mars
Red, dead
It’s all been said
Mars
Well hello there dead Mr Johnson
Only recently deceased
Standing by the foot of my bed
Where the quilt cover is slightly creased
Firstly can I just get this out there
Are you real or a made up creep
Is the supernatural really alive
Or is my brain just taking a leap
Was there something you wanted
Did you not like how you died
Well one thing I really can tell you
Is that your hair piece washed up in the tide
Sad that you chose to go that way
So cheaply and utter careless
I bet the family got a bit of a shock
When they found your head completely hairless
I’ll tell you this while you slowly fade away
Your death was met with much sorrow
It’s amazing how quickly the reaper takes us
Or in your case hair today and quickly gone tomorrow

What an unusual place
A tiny little island
Made of unusual interesting people
All milling around
Doing pretty much nothing
The beach is completely deserted
Why is a beach deserted
The streets empty as space
What a place this is
It’s warm yet cool
And the shops sell towels
Which is funny
Cause nobody is on the beach
An ice cream parlour
Just near the sea
Is nice not for the ice cream
But because the girl is flirting
I wander into a music shop
And buy some tapes
It’s not like home
Because it’s quiet
What a place this is
But I have to go home
Why oh why
Do I have to go home
