It did not leave all at once. Nothing important ever does. It left in revisions - Small edits The Slow removal of certainty There is a sharpness to the quiet When a relationship is over Not empty But rearranged You find yourself careful Over objects that carry blame Songs A venue The absence and how the mind turns to it As if love were a place And not an event In time Even the longing learns To lower its voice Never gone Just no longer in charge of the room ______________________________________

When a relationship is over
I have died before Once in October Then in May And yet I walk around May is curious So full of itself, so green With it's indifferent abundance It's quiet insistence on being alive The pigeons at the beach don't notice They've learned to absorb such disappearances Without acknowledgement At night, my mind moves thru the trees Knowing what the day could not say Nothing to confirm Yet refusing to indict __________________________

I have died before
The sand has pardoned My departure The sea is soft & endless- I understand now how Certain days are not Days at all but small Chambers In the mind Pelicans, as solemn as Priests Bid farewell I want to remain Not out of happiness- But because the days here Loosen the machinery of thought Now there are airports- Announcements Waiting Rituals of departure Passports & the punishment of the herd- I carry, in my suitcase - Shirts stiffen by salt Preparing to exchange Astonishment for the Comfort of routine The entire island moving Into memory Which means it will deepen Become more radiant Than it ever was The tide, untouched by my leaving Erases my footprints with the Tenderness of something that never Needed me at all _____________________

Turks & Caicos
We once stood on the Edge And called it Love Now it gathers itself into a corner Quietly, like an old heirloom You arrived like weather Changing rapidly Bringing your own history of doors Like a weapon Then things became careful Which is how endings often begin - Language became architecture Boundaries turned to borders Later, there was a still silence - Not the peaceful kind The abandoned kind that rearranges The room While one is caught inside The simplest of all truth: Nothing was solved or resolved Only set down We placed something fragile On a foreign beach shore And now we dare not look back As it closes Without ceremony ____________________________

End titles
The stars winked from the end of the pier - As if signaling to no one in particular She was the unity he had searched for of this he was certain The restless wind carried All their revisions - The coveted moments of intimacy Unfolding across naked arms He understood then How certain nights are not nights at all But small chambers inside the mind Each another's audience Breaking the seal of solitude Walking the sand Kiss to hand ___________________________________

What began as pleasant
It is evening again and the phone lies still Like something that has given up speaking Then dialog returns - Your words insisting on balance Mine refusing the scale We circle the same narrow bridge Each certain the other is asking too much Each certain we are the one Being asked to disappear There is a fatigue to it - I begin to understand That it is not the words themselves But their arrangement - How they close in How they draw wind from the sails We have stood on opposite ends Of something narrow & fragile Calling the crucible understanding Each asking the other To cross first Still, there are moments A smile breaking through Like the sunshine I remember in St Johns A presence, undeniable As if our collective beauty alone Could revise the terms So I stand here Holding nothing Which is at least honest Then watching the night gather itself Around that which could not resolve There is a weariness in it all But also a blooming A loosening I lean into the night To remember you Without entering the argument I can hold what was good Without negotiating the terms And from that small slice Something opens All the intimacy within spills out Here beyond the loop There is a wider space A space that doesn't require A defense ...and where Without effort Peace lands like a small sparrow in a puddle As natural as night Finding the shore of the ocean __________________________________

It is Evening Again
The night has a room no one enters And you are already there Curled inside the hush In the dark You become the rumor The shape the world has forgotten The sleep you never asked for Leans in like a dim lamp At the end of a long hallway April made you Out of wind and left over silence - Born of two that speak no more Yet you rise from this narrow dream Step into the streets of the city In clothes you chose for yourself ____________________________________

The Missing
On the bow of a sailboat Flesh & steel are one Sun gives way to rain Gives way to sun And we leave what we must The sea speaks a language That doesn't always comfort The way a debt begs to be settled The way she opens her mouth Again, the rain will come Of that we can be sure Soft and persistent A tenderness that endures But there is a place The water never reaches The hidden corridors of thought Where the night returns again These are my wounds These are my ruins Displayed over weary bones As the storm breathes thru the marrow Whispering its fragile hope - Then retiring to prayer ______________________________
