You ran your hands over my body
Like a caress, only not as tender
More of a necessity, grabbing my flesh
Your skin not quite as soft as mine
Rougher and coarser

Kissing my face as you held it in your hands
Moving mechanically in practiced ritual
Taking off our clothing, somewhat with urgency
Before falling into bed
Under the covers, hidden naked in the warmth

We made a tent with the blankets
Giggling like children with a secret
Our secret, our intimacy,
That no one else will ever know
Just the two of us, there in that moment

Our bodies moving together
As you slip inside me
Ever slowly, sensual, gradual,
Your hands still running the length of my body
As I shiver with pleasure

Collapsing after, exhausted with the effort exerted
I lie beside you
Stretching out like cat, feeling every muscle pull
Before snuggling into your side, held tight in your arms
And falling asleep.

Some men are never meant for this world,
Never meant to live and die long lives on the ground
Some are meant to burn to bright and too quickly
Some are meant to fly to the sun

The universe loves these people
The drama they leave in their wake
The universe thrives on their energy
Creating horror for horror's sake

Too beautiful for our world
Too beautiful for this life
Meant to spend sleepless nights awake
Telling stories of lovers to God

How can you shave their heads
Take their clothes
And then march them to their death?

How can you point at a mentally-ill child
Who is being murdered, slowly, by starvation
And call them the abomination?

How can you encounter a mother
Who is desperately trying to protect her defenceless child
And level your gun to shoot her?

How can you see the corpses piled in a heap
About to be burned
And not feel remorse?

I look at you and wonder,
Where was your compassion?

How can we see the skeletal children
Begging and starving
And still waste food?

How can we look at the impressionable youth
in all their innocence
Before making them fight our battles for us?

How can we treat each other
With terrible cruelty
Knowing the effect it will have?

How can we see the animals and plants
In all their beauty
And still be destroying our planet?

I look at you and wonder,
Where was your compassion?

Then I look at us,
And wonder,
where is ours?

A bright red glow emerges above the trees
The light evokes a morbid curiosity in me
A primal instinct that draws me to the light
A house on fire, a house burning

The light evokes a morbid curiosity in me
We gather like flies to something that died
A house on fire, a house burning
“Was anyone inside? Anyone hurt?”

We gather like flies to something that died
Flames lick the walls as the roof falls in
“Was anyone hurt? Anyone inside?”
Despite the heat, I shiver

Flames lick the walls as the roof falls in
A primal instinct that draws me to the light
Despite the heat, I shiver
A bright red glow emerges above the trees

Do you remember our adventures, little sister?
Do you remember our adventures?
Down the Amazon in a inflatable boat
All on a cold wooden floor.
Clutching you in my arms, little sister,
As our brother steered us through the rapids.

Do you remember our adventures, little sister?
Do you remember our adventures?
When the rainy season arrived
And we stood wobbling in the sinking boat,
Throwing buckets of imaginary water
Out onto the cold wooden floor.

Do you remember our adventures, little sister?
Do you remember our adventures?
We navigated fierce waters,
Fought of wild crocodiles,
Only to be called to lunch
And three pairs of socked feet shuffled down the hall.

Nevermore, little sister,
Nevermore shall we brave the waters of the Amazon,
As we have homework to do
Our rooms to clean
And besides, the three of us could no more fit in an inflatable boat
On a cold wooden floor.
